Pond What's In My Bag at Amoeba

We had the pleasure of interviewing Australian psychedelic band Pond recently for a What's In My Bag? episode, in which the group collectively found a righteous collection of records, books, prayer candles, and underpants at Amoeba Hollywood. Guitarist Nick Allbrook was particularly excited about finding a record by Pakastani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, which he discovered from a cab driver in London. "As soon as this taxi driver put it on, it melted my brain," he told us. All in all, the band picked out an eclectic mix of rock, hip hop, dub, world, and electronic records.

Pond formed in Perth, Australia amid the scene which also spawned Tame Impala. In fact, Tame Impala's Kevin Parker served as Pond's drummer for a bit and Pond guitarist Nick Allbrook and drummer Jay Watson were members of Tame Impala's touring band for years (Watson is still a dual member of both bands.) In addition to Allbrook and Watson, Pond consists of guitarist/bassist Joe Ryan and keyboardist Jamie Terry.

Pond The WeatherPond released their first two albums between 2009-2010 and attracted international attention with the release of their third and fourth albums, 2010's Frond and 2012's Beard, Wives and Denim. After a successful worldwide tour supporting Beard, Wives and Denim, Pond was named the “hottest band in the world right now” by NME. Their latest album is 2017's The Weather, which was produced by Kevin Parker and is the band's seventh full-length album overall. They are currently on a fall tour of North America.

In this episode, Jamie Terry found two Neil Young records from what has become known as his "Doom Trilogy" -- Tonight's The Night and On The Beach -- and went on to explain how multiple people close to Young overdosed, sending him into a dark period "But I think it led to some of his most emotionally resonant music," Terry said. Jay Watson grabbed two records by dub legend Scientist, one he'd heard before and one that was new to him. "Out of all the dub dudes," Watson stated, "Scientist is my favorite." Joe Ryan picked up the Spiritualized classic album Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, calling it a "bloody good record."

But who is "one of the most inspiring artists of the moment" for Jamie Terry? And just what does Joe Ryan listen to while washing dishes? You'll have to watch the video to find out!
