#1  Cypress Hill “Band of Gypsies (feat Sadat & Alaa Fifty)” from the veteran hip-hop crew’s powerful new Fall released album Elephants On Acid  that arrived in Amoeba on Friday last

As noted in the recently published Top Ten Hits of Summer 2018 Amoeblog, in addition to looking back at the best of the season that just ended this is the also the perfect time to look forward to the best of what lies ahead. Hence this Top Ten Picks for Fall 2018 Amoeblog comprised of albums, concerts and movies upcoming in the Fall season. A multi-genre list including album releases, concerts, plus music themed movies, these are posted in chronological order of their release or occurring dates.

Hence the first pick (as seen above and to the left is the powerful comeback, excellent brand new Cypress Hill album Elephants On Acid (BMG Rights Management) that arrived into Amoeba Music on the most recent new release date, Friday last September 28th.

Their ninth studio album Elephants On Acid is not only the iconic stoner hip-hop crew’s first album in eight long years, but the first in fourteen years with the original power lineup ofB-Real and Sen Dog back together with DJ Muggs in the lineup. And it is thanks to Muggs' production that this album is such a commanding and diverse sounding piece of work, with the standout track being the lead single "Band of Gypies" (video above) featuring guest Egyptian emcees Sadat and Alaa Fifty. But the 21 track album also stays rooted in the sound that fans first came to love Cypress Hill for as proven by such tracks as "Pass The Knife,"  "Jesus Was A Stoner," and the bi-lingual "Loco."

NOTE: other recommended new hip-hop albums that dropped this past week include Bay area legend E-40's The Gift of Gab (Heavy On The Grind) and Detroit producer/emcee Illingsworth's (formerly Doc Illingsworth) new Mello Music Group release You're No Fun (check back here for soon to be published Amoeblog interview with Illingsworth)

#3 Atmosphere
Oct 5th release of the midwest duo's eight studio album Mi Vida Local (also avail for pre-order on vinyl as 2LP set (Rhymesayers)

Atmosphere is the longtime Rhymesayers Minneapolis hip-hop duo of emcee "Slug" Sean Daly and producer "Ant" Anthony Davis who, two plus decades later, are going as strong as ever as proven by their anticipated upcoming album; Mi Vida Local (also being released on vinyl as 2LP set) via Rhymesayers Entertainment. The eight studio album from the hip-hop act, whom I interviewed for the Amoeblog a decade upon the release of their fifth album - 2008’s When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold on Rhymesayers Entertainment., has been previewed by Amoeba as follows: “[Mi Vida Local] reflects the ways in which the world – and their place in it – has changed. At times, Mi Vida Local is a heavy album, but it’s far from grim. The album pairs complex subject matter with equally deep beats – ones that show a clear lineage back to the psychedelic funk landmarks from an earlier era." Pre-order the new Atmosphere album Mi Vida Local  on CD or on vinyl as Mi Vida Local 2LP set.

#4 Oct 5th A Star Is Born Movie (Bradley Cooper Lady Gaga) + accompany OST CD + OST 2LP

A Star Is Born (2018) is a sure fire hit movie and original soundtrack (CD + 2LP ) starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. This is the fourth remake of the American classic that dates back to the original in the 1930's with the two previous remakes including Judy Garland and James Mason starring A Star Is Born in 1954, and 1976's A Star Is Born starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.  This latest version, scheduled to open in theaters nationwide on October 5th with the soundtrack been released that same day on both CD and vinyl + 2LP set, is directed by and starring Bradley Cooper as “Jackson Maine” (plus composed the film’s music) who shrewdly cast as his co-star Lady Gaga as his muse singer-songwriter  “Ally” in this justifiably hyped latest Star remake.

Across the board both music and movie critics have given A Star Is Born, featuring Lady Gaga in her movie-star debut, over-the-top positive previews. For example Variety lauded the Bradley Cooper production for being, “that thing we always yearn for but so rarely get to see: a transcendent Hollywood movie,” going on to sum up this latest version as possessing, “a look and vibe all its own — rapturous and swooning, but also delicate and intimate and luminous” and noting how the film that is set in the present day is, “in spirit… a sophisticated retro ’70s drama built around the uncanny flow of feeling that develops between the movie’s two stars.”

Equally impressive is the accompanying soundtrack OST CD and OST 2LP  set via Interscope Records.  Totaling 34 songs and clocking in at 1 hour and ten minutes, these tracks include numerous short 10 to 20 second “Dialogue” clips dispersed throughout the Lady Gaga solo and Bradley Cooper solo song tracks. Then there's a total of five duets that include “I’ll Never Love Again,” “Shallow,” “Music To My Eyes,” “Diggin My Grave” and  “I Don’t Know What Love Is."

#5  Cat Power's anticipated album Wanderer will be released Oct 5th by Domino Records on CD Black Vinyl, and Clear Vinyl] LP vinyl formats and includes the above Justin Parker penned song "Stay"

Born Chan Marshall, but best known by recording artist name Cat Power, the now 46 year old indie
rocker returns this week with her latest/tenth studio album Wanderer  on CD Black Vinyl, and Clear Vinyl] LP.  An overall sparse but intense sounding production, focusing on the simple powerful elements of voice, guitar and piano Wanderer  is being released by Domino Records and not Matador (her label home of the past two decades) reportedly due to “creative differences" between artist and label. Wanderer’s cover art (left) features an image of Marshall along  with the neck of an electric guitar and her toddler son, who was born in 2015. Reportedly life as a single parent combined with going to rehab have helped transform and emboldened Cat Power as both an individual and artist. This point is proven by the artist's engaging and commanding new eleven  track album.  Completely self-produced  Wanderer includes such standout tracks as “Black,” “Me Voy,” the duet with Lana Del Rey “Woman,” “Nothing Really Matters” and the Justin Parker penned “Stay” (see accompanying music video above)

#7 John Carpenter's Halloween 2018 OST Pumpkin Orange Vinyl (Sacred Bones) drops Oct 19th,
(also on CD and regular black LP vinyl version) - the same day the movie arrives in theaters + Amoeba San Francisco holds its Halloween Soundtrack Release Party @ 5pm

After a series of disappointing sub-par sequels, the Halloween movie franchise is back in strength this year with the upcoming 2018 version of the 1978 seminal slasher movie about Michael Myers tipped to be a sure winner. 40 years after the original John Carpenter scary movie, this highly rated 2018 version is directed by David Gordon Green who co-wrote the script with Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley. By shrewdly re-casting Jamie Lee Curtis in her iconic, breakout role as Laurie Strode, and by returning to basics of the original 1978 John Carpenter directed script’s strengths, they’ve reportedly crafted a strong new version of the horror classic.

Meanwhile John Carpenter once again is credited with the new movie’s original soundtrack that he co-composed with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. The OST will be released on CD, LP and Pumpkin Orange Vinyl LP version on the same date as the film’s release, October 19th, when at 5pm at the Amoeba San Francisco there will be a special soundtrack listening party.  In addition to spinning the all-new score in its entirety that is promised to “put the fear of the Boogie Man back into your very soul all over again” Amoeba SF will also be giving away “tons of candy” and “special goodie bags and other surprises courtesy of our friends at Sacred Bones Records” which is the label releasing the OST.

PS re Halloween in San Francisco: on Halloween Wednesday Oct 31st are two (costume-friendly) recommended concerts: The Damned at The Regency Ballroom, and SOB X RBE at The Warfield.

#8 Thom Yorke's Suspira OST pink vinyl 2LP + CD drops Oct 26 for movie in all theaters Nov 2nd

October 26th is the release date of the Thom Yorke produced original movie soundtrack Suspira CD and Suspira OST pink vinyl 2LP (XL Recordings) set for the film that gets released a week later,  November 2nd, in theaters everywhere with an earlier exclusive Oct 26th opening in both New York City and Los Angeles. Above is the lead track “Suspirium” of the 25 song  soundtrack by Yorke. This simple yet engaging piano track by the Radiohead frontman apparently acts as a recurring theme during this scary Luca Guadagnino directed "fantasy / thriller" that stars Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Lutz Ebersdorf and Chloe Grace Moretz.

The film’s creators over at Amazon Studios describe it as such; “A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.” The movie isn't even out yet and already is causing some controversy due to a lawsuit being filed just last Thursday against Amazon Studios for allegedly using images in the film Suspiria that copied the work of the late Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta.

#9  Queen bio-pic Bohemian Rhapsody opens in theaters Nov 2nd with the Bohemian Rhapsody OST arriving in Amoeba two weeks earlier Oct 19th

In addition to a good actor (check) it always helps in making music bio-pics convincing when the actor(s) resemble their respective roles (check) as Rami Malek (of Mr. Robotfame) so ably does in his spot-on portrayal of the late rock icon Freddie Mercury of Queen in the upcoming Twentieth Century Fox/New Regency movie Bohemian Rhapsody. As outlined in the promotion material for this film, Freddie Mercury was a true anomaly; one who deftly defied stereotypes and broke conventions as he led his band to superstardom.

The film, that shows Queen’s meteoric rise to fame with their unique rock sound, includes such landmark moments as their 1985 reunion for Live Aid at Wembley when Mercury faced a life-threatening illness. The big screen bio-pic opens in theaters on Nov. 2nd but the accompanying soundtrack, Bohemian Rhapsody OST (Hollywood Records) arrives in Amoeba two weeks earlier on Oct. 19th.

The 22 track Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack is a sort of new and improved Queen Greatest Hits package that in addition to including studio versions all the essential Queen megahits (inc. "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Are The Champions," Another Bites The Dust," "Killer Queen," "I Want To Break Free" and "Under Pressure" with David Bowie) also features lots of live concert versions. These include “Now I'm Here [Live At The Hammersmith Odeon],”  “Keep Yourself Alive [Live At The Rainbow],” “Fat Bottomed Girls [Live In Paris],” “Love Of My Life [Live At Rock In Rio Festival]” as well as four tracks from that aforementioned memorable 1985 Live Aid set: “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Are The Champions,” “Radio Ga Ga,” “Ay-Oh,” and “Hammer To Fall.”

Also on the new OST is the movie remixed version of “We Will Rock You (Movie Mix)”  Then there's the one non-Queen track on the soundtrack: the 1969 recording "Doin' Alright" by Smile that was written by Brian May and Tim Staffell and later re-recorded by Queen for their 1973 debut album Queen. Another good primer for this movie is the DVD/BluRay Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid. that ships free in USA.

#10 The Beatles White Album 50th Anniversary sets to be released Nov 9th [Deluxe Edition] CD
Super Deluxe Edition CD2018 Stereo Mix Vinyl 2LP set, and the Vinyl 4LP Deluxe Edition set.

One full half a century ago the Fab Four’s John, Paul, George and Ringo released their ambitious double-album The Beatles (a white cover gatefold 2LP embossed with the band’s name and a unique serial number - commonly referred to as “The White Album”) and to celebrate this landmark 50 year anniversary, the famous quartet’s album is being re-re-issued in an all new Beatles 50th Anniversary remix box set. Available from Amoeba Music on November 9th there will be four different versions (two CD and two vinyl formatted ones); [Deluxe Edition] CDSuper Deluxe Edition CD2018 Stereo Mix Vinyl 2LP set,  and the Vinyl 4LP Deluxe Edition set.

Appearing in both 5.1 Surround Audio and Stereo the 30 track album’s newest presentation includes a nice newly presented thick booklet plus lots of bonus audio material. This includes a ton of previously unreleased outtakes and demos including the famed “Escher Demos” acoustic versions of album songs recorded at George Harrison’s home in Escher at the time.

In all there are fifty different sessions takes of songs plus another 27 acoustic demos of songs, many of which have never before been released that all appear on the Super Deluxe box set. Of all the four noted upcoming new versions of the White Album the best and most expansive is this Super Deluxe Edition CD box set whose 7 discs boast more than 100 tracks in all while the impressive accompanying White Album book is a 164 page hardcover tome with lots of photos (color and B+W) plus the original photo images that came with the first pressing of the 1968 release.

The curator/producer (remixer) of this new version of the White Album is Giles Martin who is the son of the Beatles' original producer George Martin who worked on this 2018 project with engineer Sam Okell. Together it appears that they put in a lot of time and engergy in making sure that this is the ultimate collection/presentation of the album.

Recorded at London's famed Abbey Road Studios the album was masterfully crafted by the Beatles who, despite their internal behind the scenes struggles, were arguably at their most creative and most adventurous. And while initially the brilliance of the White Album went over most critics' heads the Beatles had created a totally unique album that ventured into numerous different styles and sounds and that would alter the direction of pop and rock music recordings from then onward.
