Ladytron To Mark 20 Year Anniversary with Self-Titled Sixth Album Release in February 2019

Posted by Billyjam, October 18, 2018 02:15pm | Post a Comment

Ladytron recently announced a February 15th, 2019 release date for their first album of new music since 2011’s Gravity the Seducer after which they were on hiatus for seven years. The forthcoming eponymous release, to be released on Ladytron Music via !K7, will be the UK electronic pop rock quartet’s sixth album since forming in 1999 in Liverpool, England. The anticipated self-titled album will feature the two acclaimed advance singles (“The Island” and “The Animals”) that were released over the past six months plus eleven other new tracks that will include "Until The Fire," "Paper Highways," "Run" and "Horrorscope."

Stylistically Ladytron pick up where they left off before their extended hiatus, albeit a little more serious and reflective. Intact are the infectiously catchy hooks and driving rhythms that Ladytron is known for but the lyrical content, described by the group as exploring the disquiet of our times, is a little darker. “For us, it’s like getting together with an old friend. You’ve both changed, but still have that common ground. Familiarity crossed with excitement,” said lead vocalist/synth player  Helen Marnie of the new album in a prepared statement with vocalist/guitarist/synth-player Daniel Hunt adding that, “It’s a lot heavier than Gravity, which was an intentionally more sedate, ethereal record. The atmospheres are there, but there’s more urgency underneath.”

Remembering Beloved Bay Area DJ/Hip-Hop Ambassador DJ Stef in One Word, One Year Later [#DJStefWas]

On this date exactly one year ago, October 17th 2017, NYC based NorCal transplant promoter Peter Agoston put on an all star tribute show at the Elbo Room in San Francisco to DJ Stef who had suddenly (and shockingly) died at the beginning of that month at age 55 of a heart attack. Her sudden unexpected passing caused much grief within both the Bay Area DJ/hip-hop community and the world at large. A truly beloved figure who loved DJ culture and hip-hop with a passion, this Bay Area DJ and hip-hop
ambassador who was taken too young, too soon (age 55) had touched the lives of so many - as witnessed by the turnout of friends who came from all over to pay respect to DJ Stef at that Elbo Room event; one of three that week to the late Stephanie Gardner Ornelas (DJ Stef). Read initial Amoeblog In Memoriam here and Amoeblog review of October 2017 tributes here.

Performers at the October 17th 2017 Elbo Room that night included ef. These included such scheduled acts as Del The Funky Homosapien,  Dan the AutomatorDominoPeanut Butter WolfForeign LegionZion IEclipse 427DJ PlaturnSacred Hoop and Various Blends plus such other talents as R&B vocal powerhouse Melina Jones, pioneering Bay Area turntablist DJ Quest and super talented San Francisco emcee Z-Man.   I was also on the bill doing a DJ set during which I was joined on stage by both veteran Bay Area emcee Bas-One and LA underground hip-hop icon 2Mex. During this time I got on the mic to invite those to write on cards with a sharpie one word that they felt described who DJ Stef was. The video above features some of those cards that included such descriptive words as "welcoming, serene, warn, fly, delightful" with music by Dawgisht and photos by Timi D.... See full Amoeblog review here and news report of Stef's October 1st 2017 passing here.  Rest In Beats DJ Stef.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park)

Posted by Amoebite, October 8, 2018 06:20pm | Post a Comment

Mike Shinoda - What's In My Bag?

Before Mike Shinoda's in-store performance at Amoeba Hollywood, we sat down with the Linkin Park founding member to talk about some of his favorite records, including a bunch of independent DJ LPs he was excited to find at the store. "When we were getting started as a band, our DJ, Joe, and I used to go down to Melrose and find all these independent records," he told us waxing nostalgic, going on to explain how DJs like Q-bert and DJ Swamp pushed the envelope and inspired him and his band mate. Shinoda had a lot of insight into all of his record picks, making for a sincere and enlightening What's In My Bag?

Mike Shinoda co-founded Linkin Park in 1996, serving as the band's rhythm guitarist, main songwriter, keyboardist, producer, and lead vocalist. Together with guitarist Brad Delson, Shinoda engineered and Mike Shinoda - Post Traumatic - Amoeba Musicproduced the band's 1999 Hybrid Theory EP, a teaser of sorts for their groundbreaking full-length of the same name. Linkin Park's second LP, Meteora (2003), and third LP, Minutes to Midnight (2007) were also smash hits for the band, with both albums debuting at #1 on the Billboard Top 200. The band has steadily climbed over the course of its twenty-plus-year career, with A Thousand Suns (2010), Living Things (2012), The Hunting Party (2014), and One More Light (2017) all doing brisk business on the charts. Linkin Park has won two Grammy awards, for the track "Crawling" (Hybrid Theory) and "Numb/Encore," from their 2004 collaboration with Jay-Z, Collision Course.

Following Health Scare & Reunited with The Imposters, Elvis Costello to Release "Look Now" in Regular + Deluxe versions, Oct 12

Posted by Billyjam, October 8, 2018 05:15pm | Post a Comment
Elvis Costello and The Imposters Look Now CD (also on vinyl LP, Deluxe CD, Deluxe LP,
+ Deluxe LP Red Vinyl)  (Concord Records)

Elvis Costello and The Imposters are back with a new release this Friday, October 12th; Look Now CD (also on vinyl LP, Deluxe CD, Deluxe LP,  Deluxe LP Red Vinyl)  via Concord Records. The new Costello album sounds as good as he did back in the day circa  Imperial Bedroom - the album widely considered  Elvis Costello's best songwriting work to date. It is also the Elvis album that the highly anticipated new Costello album has been repeatedly compared to by critics, as well as by the artist himself.

"
If we could make an album with the scope of Imperial Bedroom and some of the beauty and emotion of Painted From Memory, we would really have something,” Costello said in a prepared statement several months ago referencing both his 1998 album with Burt Bacharach and his and The Attractions  stellar album from three and a half decades ago. That landmark 1982 album had clearly been on the artist's mind over the past year since he had also been playing tracks off it on his most recent tour dates.

US DJ Throdown Set To Take World Title in London: 2018 DMC World DJ Championship Preview + 2018 DMC US Finals Review

Posted by Billyjam, October 7, 2018 01:35am | Post a Comment

Today, Sunday October 7th, reigning US champion DJ Throdown is on the other side of the Atlantic in England where he will represent the USA in the anticipated annual 2018 DMC World DJ Championships at London’s Islington Assembly Hall. There the Washington DC DJ, who in early August won the 2018 DMC US Finals DJ Battle in Denver, will face off against such other national champion DMC battle DJs as Skillz who recently won the 2018 DMC France Championship, El Statiko who took the title at the Sept 18th  2018 DMC UK Championship Finals, and DJ Chell who won the 2018 DMC Russia Championship Finals on September 12th (Mixmaster Mike and Shortkut were special guests at that DJ battle in Moscow).

Despite how highly talented these and such other international competitors as Italy's DJ Color or Australia's Midsole might be, US DJ Throdown stands a very good chance of winning based on his winning performance in Denver two months ago. If the super-skilled and super-confident American DJ can duplicate both the high level of performance plus the aura/attitude he exuded in Denver at the US Finals he stands a real good chance to win the 2018 DMC World DJ Championship title for the USA.

#1  Lil Wayne Tha Carter V (Cash Money)

Hot on the heels of last Friday's much-discussed digital release of Dwayne Michael Carter Jr's way overdue fifth/final installment of the New Orleans rapper's long running series, this week comes the physical version of Lil Wayne's Tha Carter V (Cash Money). His twelfth studio album, Tha Carter V finally got released following years of disappointing delays and scheduling setbacks of the sequel to 2011's Tha Carter IV that's been reportedly completed and ready for release since 2014. Then finally last week, deliberately scheduled for release on the rapper's 36th birthday of September 27, 2018, Tha Carter V saw the light of day. With both older original V tracks alongside some brand new very recently recorded album tracks, Tha Carter V's release  resulted in a social media buzz and sales that led to the album been registered as the #1 Billboard 200 album this week. Reviews and social media posts about Tha Carter V focused on such things as the strengths of the overdue release notably such tracks as "Mona Lisa (feat. Kendrick Lamar),"  "Open Letter," "Let It Fly (feat. Travis Scott)," "Famous," and "Can’t Be Broken." There were also the inevitable comparisons to such superior installments as Tha Carter III, and recapping of Wayne's extended legal battles with Birdman and Cash Money that contributed to the album's delays.

Producer/MC Illingsworth On Hometown of Detroit, Flint's Water, Overcoming Creative Blocks & His New Album "You're No Fun"

Posted by Billyjam, October 4, 2018 11:39pm | Post a Comment
Detroit hip-hop artist Illingsworth’s debut album for Mello Music Group, You're No Fun, dropped in this past week. Although the master beat maker / producer (and sometime emcee)  has been making hip-hop
for many years already, as proven by his back catalog of underground releases both as a solo artist (including 2015's Doodles EP Worth The Wait LP) and part of the group Detroit CYDI, to many this is seen as his first official release. Hence why the artist, in a recent interview by phone from Detroit with the Amoeblog,  said he considers the album, “a kind of re-introduction to people who are familiar with the Mello Music label but not me personally. It’s for new listeners to get a feel for where I'm at.”  Whether it’s the a listener’s first intro or a re-introduction, You’re No Fun is a powerful album that showcases the artist formerly known as Doc Illingsworth’s talents as both producer (his primary role) and mic spitter (his second love). Boasting 17 tracks, 14 are all instrumental while the 4 vocal tracks feature him solo on two and in the company of  emcee talents Open Mike Eagle and Denmark Vessey respectively on the two others; “Peeves” and “DnD”.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with The Voidz

The Voidz - What's In My Bag? - Amoeba Music

The Voidz visited Amoeba Hollywood recently for an album signing and we had the chance to sit down with the group and check out some of the cool stuff they found at the shop. "The thing is I never knew how to shop at a record store," admitted frontman Julian Casablancas, stating that most of his music has come from his friends' recommendations. Something that did catch his eye was a vintage plaque featuring an image of David Bowie decked in all white, playing saxaphone. "It just has a crazy vibe," he told us. "It's almost like you'd see it in some weird fast food little restaurant; you know where they have weird, random celebrities autographed." It wasn't all vintage emphermera though, as Casablancas and the rest of the band found an eclectic collection of records and posters.

The Voidz (fka Julian Casablancas+The Voidz) are an indie/dance punk band founded by The Strokes vocalist Casablancas. Members Jeff Kite (keyboards) and Alex Carapetis (percussion) had previously The Voidz - Virtue - Amoeba Musicworked with Casablancas as part of Sick Six, the backing band for this first solo LP, Phrazes for the Young. Kite and Carapetis had worked with Jake Bercovici (bass, synth) on "I Like the Night," a track Casablancas recorded as part of an ad campaign for French fashion line Azzaro. With the addition of guitarists Jeramy "Beardo" Gritter and Amir Yaghmai, the lineup was complete.

Having A Movie Moment With Jon Longhi: Halloween Roundup, Part 1

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, October 3, 2018 09:15pm | Post a Comment

By Jon Longhi

Welcome to a special Halloween themed Having A Movie Moment With Jon Longhi, where I review recent Blu-ray releases. Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year because that’s when we get a glut of horror and sci-fi releases. I’m actually going to do two columns this month just to try and catch up with all of them.

The Bloodthirsty Trilogy, Arrow Video:
It seems that even the most obscure and barely seen movies are getting nice Blu-ray releases these days The Bloodthirty Trilogybut not if you're a fan of Toho studios. Many of us grew up with their sci-fi and monster movies like Godzilla. Sadly, only a handful of these films have been released on Blu-ray in this country. There's a few of the Godzilla films out on Blu-ray but most of their other monster and sci-fi classics like Rodan, Mothra, War Of The Gargantuas, or The Mysterians have never gotten Blu-ray releases and the old DVD copies have been out of print for years. Evidently, the studio is hard to work with when it comes to international releases of their films and that is very sad for those of us who love their movies. This new set helps rectify that situation. Here you get three Toho horror classics in one nice little package. I've been obsessed with this genre of Toho's films since I was a child and have long known of these movies but never got a chance to see them till this new Arrow Video release came out.
