New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog - What's In My Bag? - Amoeba Music

Scott McMicken of Dr. Dog did some shopping at Amoeba Hollywood for our latest What's In My Bag? episode. "I done good," he told us, having dug for some records by his recent musical interests, including the odd-ball, experimental rockers Quintron and Miss Pussycat. Their album Swamp Tech/Electric Swamp was "something that was on the top of my list to suss out when I got here." He continued, "I've gotten really into the whole world of Quintron and Miss Pussycatm, which goes so far, even beyond music."

American rock band Dr. Dog fuses elements of iconic '60s pop acts like The Beatles and The Beach Boys with contemporary indie rock. Founded in Philadelphia in 1999, the band consists of childhood Dr. Dog - Critical Equationfriends Toby Leaman (bass guitar/vocals) and Scott McMicken (lead guitar/vocal), plus Frank McElroy (rhythm guitar), Zach Miller (keyboard), and Eric Slick (drums). The band coalesced while several of the members were attending West Chester University in Pennsylvania. Their first album, 2001's The Psychedelic Swamp, was self-recorded and self-released.

Amoeba New Vinyl Arrivals

#AmoebaCrateDigginInTheCrateInTheCrate  There's such a bounty of new vinyl releases to arrive into Amoeba Music over the past week, both brand new titles and reissues of older and out of print titles, that this Ameoblog just scratches the surface. Check here for all recently released vinyl titles in LP, 10",  7” and 12” and box-sets. Barry White The 20th Century Records Albums (1973-1979) [Box Set] (9LP) (Island/Def Jam) is one of the week’s new standout vinyl releases that encapsulates the prolific seventies back catalog of the iconic smooth soul singer who prematurely passed at age 58 back in 2003. Even better is the fact that Island/Def Jam have reissued this as both the nine LP box set (also a CD box set) and as nine individually reissued albums for those who may already have some of the albums in their collections.

These nine Barry White albums include the October 1973 release Stone Gon' LP that featured White’s huge 1974 hit “Never, Never Gonna Give You Up.” The other eight reissued White albums are I’ve Got So Much to Give LP (1973), Can’t Get Enough LP (1974), Just Another Way to Say I Love You LP (1975), Let the Music Play LP (1976), Is This Whatcha Wont? LP (1976), Barry White Sings for Someone You Love LP (1977), The Man LP (1978)  and I Love To Sing The Songs I Sing LP (1979).

Friday Records
have just re-released the late great David Bowie’s 2002 album Heathen in four different colored vinyl versions. The critically acclaimed twelve track LP, that features such Bowie penned songs as "Slip Away" and "Slow Burn" as well as covers of Neil Young's "I've Been Waiting For You" and The Legendary Stardust Cowboy's "I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship," has been reissued as Heathen gold vinyl LP, Heathen red & orange swirl vinyl LP, Heathen orange swirl vinyl LP,  and Heathen brown-white-gray swirl vinyl LP.

Sony/Legacy
have reissued on vinyl a handful of Bruce Springsteen albums over the past week that include 1995’s Ghost Of Tom Joad LP, 1993’s Bruce Springsteen In Concert/MTV Plugged 2LP set, 1992’s Lucky Town LP, and 1987’s Tunnel of Love 2LP set. The Grammy Award winning album (1988 Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo) included the popular singles "Tunnel Of Love," "Brilliant Disguise," "One Step Up", "Tougher Than the Rest", and "Spare Parts."

Among the new titles on vinyl this week are Anna DeSilva & Phew’s Island 2LP  (Shouting Out Loud!), electronica act Anchorsong’s Cohesion LP  (Tru Thoughts Records), and hard-rocking, heavy metal creators Crafts Total Soul Rape LP (Season of Mist).

Having A Movie Moment With Jon Longhi: Halloween Roundup, Part 2

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, October 29, 2018 01:55pm | Post a Comment

By Jon Longhi

Welcome to the second special Halloween themed Having A Movie Moment With Jon Longhi, where I review recent Blu-ray releases. Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year because that’s when we get a glut of new horror and sci-fi releases. This is my second column this month where I just try and catch up with all of them.

Laserblast, Full Moon Features:
This is kind of a crappy little sci-fi movie from the glory days of VHS that has been given a super deluxe Laserblastedition for it's first Blu-ray release. The film comes in a full-size reproduction of the original video packaging. Inside the huge VHS box you get a DVD/ Blu-ray combo pack of the remastered film and a tiny toy reproduction of one of the aliens from the movie. These are the kinds of goodies that drive hardcore fans crazy and I'm sure somewhere in the future when this goes out-of-print copies will go for big bucks on Amazon and Ebay. Like I said, this is a crappy little movie but there are those of us out there (like myself) who love this film because it was on television when we were growing up. After re-watching it recently, I came to the conclusion that the movie has a really great beginning and end but really drags in between. The film starts with a crazed monster madman shooting a laser gun in the Southern California desert. He is killed by two aliens who soon depart but leave the gun behind. Shortly afterwards, a young man named Billy Duncan discovers the laser gun and that's when things start to go bad for him. At first he is overjoyed by the destructive power of the weapon but it soon starts to take over his life and physically change him. His skin starts to turn green and his behavior becomes increasingly violent and psychopathic. His relationships with his supportive girlfriend and others are increasingly strained as he becomes an alien madman who eventually goes completely berserk and finally goes on a rampage with his new laser gun. That's when the aliens need to come back...

#HipHopReport - new from Homeboy Sandman & Edan, Roc Marciano, Apollo Brown & Joell Ortiz etc. + Ready Red's DJ Legacy Celebrated

Homeboy Sandman & Edan Humble Pi LP (Stones Throw)

Emcee Homeboy Sandman has joined forces with producer/DJ/MC Edan to form a hip-hop power duo and record the new Humble Pi LP  that's just one of the many exciting new hip-hop releases to arrive into Amoeba this week including such others as Apollo Brown & Joell Ortiz's Mona Lisa (pictured left) and others listed down below. More of an EP than a full-length album, the seven track vinyl release from Edan and Homeboy Sandman via Stones Throw Records may only clock in at 23 minutes but those are all killer and no filler 23 minutes of satisfying hip-hop; just as one would expect from this super-gifted pairing.

Humble Pi LP is the first release from Queens NY emcee Homeboy Sandman this year, following both last year's solo Veins and his latest Aesop Rock collaboration in their Lice series; Tripe Fat Lice via Rhymesayers and Stones Throw.  Included in the brand new seven song track list are such bangers as "Rock & Roll Indian Dance," "Grim Seasons,"  "#NeverUseTheInternet  and "The Gut." See the just published accompanying music video below for "The Gut" on which Homeboy Sandman is joined on vocals by Edan blesses the mic for a short segment. New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains

Posted by Amoebite, October 24, 2018 12:44pm | Post a Comment

Jerry Cantrell - What's in My Bag? - Amoeba Music

Alice In Chains songwriter, vocalist, and guitar player Jerry Cantrell went shopping at Amoeba Hollywood recently and shared some of the records that shaped his musical tastes for our latest What's In My Bag? episode. Cantrell found a healthy stack of vinyl reissues of some of his favorite records and illuminated what made each one special in his life. "I love everything that Elton John does," he told us, "but Madman Across The Water, there's something really magical about this record to me." Cantrell went on to say the British legend was "the artist that kinda made me want to be a musician."

Jerry Cantrell is best known for his work with Alice In Chains. Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney founded the grunge/heavy metal band in 1987, taking the Alice In Chains - Rainier Fogname from lead vocalist Layne Staley's previous project, the glam metal band Alice N' Chains. Cantrell has been designated a "Riff Lord" by the UK's Metal Hammer magazine and ranked #38 on Guitar World's "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists of All Time" list.

Hip-Hop Report Oct 22 2018: DJ Skillz @ DMC World, B+ Bay Exhibit, New Vinyl: KYLE, Illingsworth, Hobo Johnson, deM atlaS + more

Posted by Billyjam, October 22, 2018 07:13pm | Post a Comment

Freaks of The Industry: Bay Area Hip Hop Shot by B+ is the descriptively titled new photo exhibit by photographer Brian Cross (aka B+) at San Francisco’s Family Affair in the Lower Haight. The Bay-centric visual display includes photos of such NorCal hip-hoppers as The Coup and members of the Hieroglyphics and Solesides (later Quannum) crews including DJ Shadow (whose Entroducing...album cover art he's credited for) who was among those at the opening party a few night ago. Billed as “a visual mixtape of various artists repping the Bay outside the mainstream,”  the large scale image display will run through November 17th when B+ will be back in the house.

The Irish born, LA based photographer was also there on opening night last Thursday. Among those in attendance was veteran Bay Area hip-hop photographer Timi D… who praised the exhibit calling it, “a very tight but bold presentation of images that gives a very personable feel to the viewer.” Timi, who took the accompanying photos above and left for the Amoeblog,  added that the exhibit’s, “big prints from film scans offer a classic look and feel.” B+ exhibit at Family Affair at 683 Haight Street thru Nov 17th. Ladytron To Mark 20 Year Anniversary with Self-Titled Sixth Album Release in February 2019

Posted by Billyjam, October 18, 2018 02:15pm | Post a Comment

Ladytron recently announced a February 15th, 2019 release date for their first album of new music since 2011’s Gravity the Seducer after which they were on hiatus for seven years. The forthcoming eponymous release, to be released on Ladytron Music via !K7, will be the UK electronic pop rock quartet’s sixth album since forming in 1999 in Liverpool, England. The anticipated self-titled album will feature the two acclaimed advance singles (“The Island” and “The Animals”) that were released over the past six months plus eleven other new tracks that will include "Until The Fire," "Paper Highways," "Run" and "Horrorscope."

Stylistically Ladytron pick up where they left off before their extended hiatus, albeit a little more serious and reflective. Intact are the infectiously catchy hooks and driving rhythms that Ladytron is known for but the lyrical content, described by the group as exploring the disquiet of our times, is a little darker. “For us, it’s like getting together with an old friend. You’ve both changed, but still have that common ground. Familiarity crossed with excitement,” said lead vocalist/synth player  Helen Marnie of the new album in a prepared statement with vocalist/guitarist/synth-player Daniel Hunt adding that, “It’s a lot heavier than Gravity, which was an intentionally more sedate, ethereal record. The atmospheres are there, but there’s more urgency underneath.”

Remembering Beloved Bay Area DJ/Hip-Hop Ambassador DJ Stef in One Word, One Year Later [#DJStefWas]

Posted by Billyjam, October 17, 2018 01:05pm | Post a Comment

On this date exactly one year ago, October 17th 2017, NYC based NorCal transplant promoter Peter Agoston put on an all star tribute show at the Elbo Room in San Francisco to DJ Stef who had suddenly (and shockingly) died at the beginning of that month at age 55 of a heart attack. Her sudden unexpected passing caused much grief within both the Bay Area DJ/hip-hop community and the world at large. A truly beloved figure who loved DJ culture and hip-hop with a passion, this Bay Area DJ and hip-hop
ambassador who was taken too young, too soon (age 55) had touched the lives of so many - as witnessed by the turnout of friends who came from all over to pay respect to DJ Stef at that Elbo Room event; one of three that week to the late Stephanie Gardner Ornelas (DJ Stef). Read initial Amoeblog In Memoriam here and Amoeblog review of October 2017 tributes here.

Performers at the October 17th 2017 Elbo Room that night included ef. These included such scheduled acts as Del The Funky Homosapien,  Dan the AutomatorDominoPeanut Butter WolfForeign LegionZion IEclipse 427DJ PlaturnSacred Hoop and Various Blends plus such other talents as R&B vocal powerhouse Melina Jones, pioneering Bay Area turntablist DJ Quest and super talented San Francisco emcee Z-Man.   I was also on the bill doing a DJ set during which I was joined on stage by both veteran Bay Area emcee Bas-One and LA underground hip-hop icon 2Mex. During this time I got on the mic to invite those to write on cards with a sharpie one word that they felt described who DJ Stef was. The video above features some of those cards that included such descriptive words as "welcoming, serene, warn, fly, delightful" with music by Dawgisht and photos by Timi D.... New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Tommy Wiseau & Greg Sestero

Posted by Amoebite, October 15, 2018 03:12pm | Post a Comment

Tommy Wiseau & Greg Sestero - What's In My Bag?

Cult movie icons Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero recently visited Amoeba Hollywood for an in-store signing of The Disaster Artist, the biopic about the making of their now infamous film, The Room. Before the event the two went looking for some of their favorite films. Wiseau gravitated toward movies featuring his favorite actors, while Sestero was inspired by his favorite LA-based flicks, like Drive, his "favorite, modern, LA noir film." Wiseau was also a fan, commenting, ""If they don't make Drive 2, I will make my own Drive." Fingers crossed that actually happens!

Actor/writer/director Tommy Wiseau and actor/author Greg Sestero are instantly recognizable as the forces behind the 2003 cult film The Room. The pair met in acting class in 1998, with Sestero The Disaster Artist Blu-rayoriginally agreeing to help with casting and other behind-the-scenes duties in the six-million-dollar film before eventually taking on the role of Mark, the best friend of Wiseau's character Tommy. The Room still screens regularly worldwide and has attracted an eager fandom that dresses like the film's characters and throws plastic cutlery and footballs at the screen at key points in the narration. The process of making the film is detailed in Sestero's 2013 memoir The Disaster Artist, the inspiration behind the Oscar-nominated film of the same name.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park)

Posted by Amoebite, October 8, 2018 06:20pm | Post a Comment

Mike Shinoda - What's In My Bag?

Before Mike Shinoda's in-store performance at Amoeba Hollywood, we sat down with the Linkin Park founding member to talk about some of his favorite records, including a bunch of independent DJ LPs he was excited to find at the store. "When we were getting started as a band, our DJ, Joe, and I used to go down to Melrose and find all these independent records," he told us waxing nostalgic, going on to explain how DJs like Q-bert and DJ Swamp pushed the envelope and inspired him and his band mate. Shinoda had a lot of insight into all of his record picks, making for a sincere and enlightening What's In My Bag?

Mike Shinoda co-founded Linkin Park in 1996, serving as the band's rhythm guitarist, main songwriter, keyboardist, producer, and lead vocalist. Together with guitarist Brad Delson, Shinoda engineered and Mike Shinoda - Post Traumatic - Amoeba Musicproduced the band's 1999 Hybrid Theory EP, a teaser of sorts for their groundbreaking full-length of the same name. Linkin Park's second LP, Meteora (2003), and third LP, Minutes to Midnight (2007) were also smash hits for the band, with both albums debuting at #1 on the Billboard Top 200. The band has steadily climbed over the course of its twenty-plus-year career, with A Thousand Suns (2010), Living Things (2012), The Hunting Party (2014), and One More Light (2017) all doing brisk business on the charts. Linkin Park has won two Grammy awards, for the track "Crawling" (Hybrid Theory) and "Numb/Encore," from their 2004 collaboration with Jay-Z, Collision Course.

Following Health Scare & Reunited with The Imposters, Elvis Costello to Release "Look Now" in Regular + Deluxe versions, Oct 12

Posted by Billyjam, October 8, 2018 05:15pm | Post a Comment
Elvis Costello and The Imposters Look Now CD (also on vinyl LP, Deluxe CD, Deluxe LP,
+ Deluxe LP Red Vinyl)  (Concord Records)

Elvis Costello and The Imposters are back with a new release this Friday, October 12th; Look Now CD (also on vinyl LP, Deluxe CD, Deluxe LP,  Deluxe LP Red Vinyl)  via Concord Records. The new Costello album sounds as good as he did back in the day circa  Imperial Bedroom - the album widely considered  Elvis Costello's best songwriting work to date. It is also the Elvis album that the highly anticipated new Costello album has been repeatedly compared to by critics, as well as by the artist himself.

"
If we could make an album with the scope of Imperial Bedroom and some of the beauty and emotion of Painted From Memory, we would really have something,” Costello said in a prepared statement several months ago referencing both his 1998 album with Burt Bacharach and his and The Attractions  stellar album from three and a half decades ago. That landmark 1982 album had clearly been on the artist's mind over the past year since he had also been playing tracks off it on his most recent tour dates.

US DJ Throdown Set To Take World Title in London: 2018 DMC World DJ Championship Preview + 2018 DMC US Finals Review

Posted by Billyjam, October 7, 2018 01:35am | Post a Comment

Today, Sunday October 7th, reigning US champion DJ Throdown is on the other side of the Atlantic in England where he will represent the USA in the anticipated annual 2018 DMC World DJ Championships at London’s Islington Assembly Hall. There the Washington DC DJ, who in early August won the 2018 DMC US Finals DJ Battle in Denver, will face off against such other national champion DMC battle DJs as Skillz who recently won the 2018 DMC France Championship, El Statiko who took the title at the Sept 18th  2018 DMC UK Championship Finals, and DJ Chell who won the 2018 DMC Russia Championship Finals on September 12th (Mixmaster Mike and Shortkut were special guests at that DJ battle in Moscow).

Despite how highly talented these and such other international competitors as Italy's DJ Color or Australia's Midsole might be, US DJ Throdown stands a very good chance of winning based on his winning performance in Denver two months ago. If the super-skilled and super-confident American DJ can duplicate both the high level of performance plus the aura/attitude he exuded in Denver at the US Finals he stands a real good chance to win the 2018 DMC World DJ Championship title for the USA.

#1  Lil Wayne Tha Carter V (Cash Money)

Hot on the heels of last Friday's much-discussed digital release of Dwayne Michael Carter Jr's way overdue fifth/final installment of the New Orleans rapper's long running series, this week comes the physical version of Lil Wayne's Tha Carter V (Cash Money). His twelfth studio album, Tha Carter V finally got released following years of disappointing delays and scheduling setbacks of the sequel to 2011's Tha Carter IV that's been reportedly completed and ready for release since 2014. Then finally last week, deliberately scheduled for release on the rapper's 36th birthday of September 27, 2018, Tha Carter V saw the light of day. With both older original V tracks alongside some brand new very recently recorded album tracks, Tha Carter V's release  resulted in a social media buzz and sales that led to the album been registered as the #1 Billboard 200 album this week. Reviews and social media posts about Tha Carter V focused on such things as the strengths of the overdue release notably such tracks as "Mona Lisa (feat. Kendrick Lamar),"  "Open Letter," "Let It Fly (feat. Travis Scott)," "Famous," and "Can’t Be Broken." There were also the inevitable comparisons to such superior installments as Tha Carter III, and recapping of Wayne's extended legal battles with Birdman and Cash Money that contributed to the album's delays.

Producer/MC Illingsworth On Hometown of Detroit, Flint's Water, Overcoming Creative Blocks & His New Album "You're No Fun"

Posted by Billyjam, October 4, 2018 11:39pm | Post a Comment
Detroit hip-hop artist Illingsworth’s debut album for Mello Music Group, You're No Fun, dropped in this past week. Although the master beat maker / producer (and sometime emcee)  has been making hip-hop
for many years already, as proven by his back catalog of underground releases both as a solo artist (including 2015's Doodles EP Worth The Wait LP) and part of the group Detroit CYDI, to many this is seen as his first official release. Hence why the artist, in a recent interview by phone from Detroit with the Amoeblog,  said he considers the album, “a kind of re-introduction to people who are familiar with the Mello Music label but not me personally. It’s for new listeners to get a feel for where I'm at.”  Whether it’s the a listener’s first intro or a re-introduction, You’re No Fun is a powerful album that showcases the artist formerly known as Doc Illingsworth’s talents as both producer (his primary role) and mic spitter (his second love). Boasting 17 tracks, 14 are all instrumental while the 4 vocal tracks feature him solo on two and in the company of  emcee talents Open Mike Eagle and Denmark Vessey respectively on the two others; “Peeves” and “DnD”.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with The Voidz

Posted by Amoebite, October 4, 2018 08:42pm | Post a Comment

The Voidz - What's In My Bag? - Amoeba Music

The Voidz visited Amoeba Hollywood recently for an album signing and we had the chance to sit down with the group and check out some of the cool stuff they found at the shop. "The thing is I never knew how to shop at a record store," admitted frontman Julian Casablancas, stating that most of his music has come from his friends' recommendations. Something that did catch his eye was a vintage plaque featuring an image of David Bowie decked in all white, playing saxaphone. "It just has a crazy vibe," he told us. "It's almost like you'd see it in some weird fast food little restaurant; you know where they have weird, random celebrities autographed." It wasn't all vintage emphermera though, as Casablancas and the rest of the band found an eclectic collection of records and posters.

The Voidz (fka Julian Casablancas+The Voidz) are an indie/dance punk band founded by The Strokes vocalist Casablancas. Members Jeff Kite (keyboards) and Alex Carapetis (percussion) had previously The Voidz - Virtue - Amoeba Musicworked with Casablancas as part of Sick Six, the backing band for this first solo LP, Phrazes for the Young. Kite and Carapetis had worked with Jake Bercovici (bass, synth) on "I Like the Night," a track Casablancas recorded as part of an ad campaign for French fashion line Azzaro. With the addition of guitarists Jeramy "Beardo" Gritter and Amir Yaghmai, the lineup was complete.

Having A Movie Moment With Jon Longhi: Halloween Roundup, Part 1

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, October 3, 2018 09:15pm | Post a Comment

By Jon Longhi

Welcome to a special Halloween themed Having A Movie Moment With Jon Longhi, where I review recent Blu-ray releases. Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year because that’s when we get a glut of horror and sci-fi releases. I’m actually going to do two columns this month just to try and catch up with all of them.

The Bloodthirsty Trilogy, Arrow Video:
It seems that even the most obscure and barely seen movies are getting nice Blu-ray releases these days The Bloodthirty Trilogybut not if you're a fan of Toho studios. Many of us grew up with their sci-fi and monster movies like Godzilla. Sadly, only a handful of these films have been released on Blu-ray in this country. There's a few of the Godzilla films out on Blu-ray but most of their other monster and sci-fi classics like Rodan, Mothra, War Of The Gargantuas, or The Mysterians have never gotten Blu-ray releases and the old DVD copies have been out of print for years. Evidently, the studio is hard to work with when it comes to international releases of their films and that is very sad for those of us who love their movies. This new set helps rectify that situation. Here you get three Toho horror classics in one nice little package. I've been obsessed with this genre of Toho's films since I was a child and have long known of these movies but never got a chance to see them till this new Arrow Video release came out.

Close out your San Francisco summer with the final California Academy of Sciences' NightLife LIVE of the year on Thursday, October 11th, featuring a performance from folk-rock singer-songwriter Kevin Morby. He’ll bring guitar-soaked tracks from his latest album City Music, which Pitchfork praised for its “elegant, dusky atmosphere.” Bay Area-based musician Hannah van Loon will bring her latest solo project Tanukichan to the stage in all its dream pop glory. Plus, the national “all-girl, all-vinyl” collective, Chulita Vinyl Club, will be there keeping the museum party going all night.

Also, enter the Museum's West Garden to find a surreal installation by artist Santiago Insignares and “Light Bodies,” an interactive sculpture by Leif Maginnis. Keep your senses stimulated with VR experiences by Dream Logic and Vision Quest. Take a live "Tour of the Universe" or explore the immersive and trippy art and music experience that is "Vortex 2.0" in the Morrison Planetarium. And don't forget to visit us at the Amoeba Music pop-up shop and browse our specially-curated vinyl!
