The Voidz - What's In My Bag? - Amoeba Music

The Voidz visited Amoeba Hollywood recently for an album signing and we had the chance to sit down with the group and check out some of the cool stuff they found at the shop. "The thing is I never knew how to shop at a record store," admitted frontman Julian Casablancas, stating that most of his music has come from his friends' recommendations. Something that did catch his eye was a vintage plaque featuring an image of David Bowie decked in all white, playing saxaphone. "It just has a crazy vibe," he told us. "It's almost like you'd see it in some weird fast food little restaurant; you know where they have weird, random celebrities autographed." It wasn't all vintage emphermera though, as Casablancas and the rest of the band found an eclectic collection of records and posters.

The Voidz (fka Julian Casablancas+The Voidz) are an indie/dance punk band founded by The Strokes vocalist Casablancas. Members Jeff Kite (keyboards) and Alex Carapetis (percussion) had previously The Voidz - Virtue - Amoeba Musicworked with Casablancas as part of Sick Six, the backing band for this first solo LP, Phrazes for the Young. Kite and Carapetis had worked with Jake Bercovici (bass, synth) on "I Like the Night," a track Casablancas recorded as part of an ad campaign for French fashion line Azzaro. With the addition of guitarists Jeramy "Beardo" Gritter and Amir Yaghmai, the lineup was complete.

In 2014 and 2015, the band signed to Casablancas' record label, Cult, and began performing at festivals like Coachella, SXSW, Primavera Sound, Governor's Ball, and Lollapalooza. The band's debut LP, Tyranny, was released in fall 2014. In December 2017, they shortened their name to The Voidz and signed to RCA, who would release their second LP, Virtue, in spring 2018. The Voidz are set to wrap their fall American tour and embark on the European leg of tour in fall 2018.

Yaghmai's first pick was a CD featuring Jacqueline De Pre's performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto. "In a lot of classical circles it's considered the greatest performance of this piece ever, still," he told us. Gritter picked up the John Coltrane album Impressions. "'India' is my favorite track on this," he said, adding, "I like Coltrane the most on the soprano...It sounds like he's crying through the instrument." Bercovici found a reissue LP of George Jones Sings White Lightning and Other Favorites, calling him "one of my favorite singers." "I love him, I don't really listen to much country music, but there's something about how he sings." Kite bought Jean-Michel Jarre's Oxygene Trilogy LP box set, calling the records "pioneers of hear the early stages of that kind of music, and it's exciting." Carapetis found a cool AC/DC poster featuring original singer Bon Scott and lead guitarist Angus Young. "(Julian) and I love Bon Scott," he proclaimed.

But which record did Casablancas discover in a YouTube wormhole? For the answer, and all of the band's picks, watch the video below.
