Wallows - What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

LA pop/rock band Wallows performed at Amoeba Hollywood to celebrate the release of their debut EP Spring and beforehand we got a chance to talk with them about some of their favorite records, including David Bowie's final album, Black Star. "To be 68 years old and making this album," Dylan Minnette marveled, "[it's] completely game-changing, and unlike anything I've ever heard." The singer/guitarist considered the record one of the artist's best, saying, "David Bowie went out with one of his greatest albums in his entire catalog."

Los Angeles-based Wallows consists of Braeden Lemasters (vocals/guitars), Dylan Minnette (vocals/guitars), and Cole Preston (drums). Lemasters and Minnette, both child actors, met through their work in the film industry, later inviting Preston to play music with them. They have been Wallows - Spring - Amoeba Musicperforming in bands together since they were eleven-year-old students at the San Fernando Valley music school Join the Band. After collaborating musically for almost a decade, Wallows signed to Atlantic, releasing their debut recording, the Spring EP, (fittingly) in spring 2018.

The EP was produced by Grammy award-winning engineer/producer/mixer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Brian Wilson, Modest Mouse) at the legendary Sunset Sound in Hollywood. The group draws inspiration from classic and indie rock; their love for The Beatles, Vampire Weekend, and St. Vincent can be heard in their light-hearted, jangle pop/post-punk sound. The band is named after the Hawaiian skate spot featured in the 1987 doc The Search for Animal Chin.

Braeden Lemasters was excited to pick up Antisocialites, the latest LP from Alvvays, which he pointed out was produced by John Congleton. "Every song on it is great," said Lemasters. "It's an amazing album." Cole Preston was searching for CDs to play in his car and chose a compilation by The Kinks, explaining, "everybody knows The Kinks, but they're not respected at the level they should be." Another underrated band for Preston was Atlanta's Of Montreal and he grabbed their 2005 album The Sunlandic Twins. Dylan Minnette was drawn to a limited, deluxe LP box set of Childish Gambino's 2016 album Awaken, My Love! that also included a virtual reality headset. Recalling the first time he heard Awaken, My Love, Minnette noted that Donald Glover "just completely redefined himself." Lemasters selected another modern classic, Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly. "The concept of this album is insane," he told us. "The vibe, everything, Kendrick just like nailed it."

But which record does Minnette call "the perfect album to have on vinyl?" And which Smiths albums did Lemasters select? You'll have to watch the video to find out:
