New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Mogwai

Posted by Amoebite, July 31, 2018 02:43pm | Post a Comment

Mogwai - Stuart Braithwaite

Stuart Braithwaite of Scottish post-rock band Mogwai paid Amoeba Hollywood a visit during the band's North American tour for our latest What's In My Bag? episode. "This is probably the thing I'm most excited about," said Braithwaite while holding up the massive vinyl box set Root Hog Or Die: An Alan Lomax Centennial Tribute. The massive 6-LP box set of ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax's field recordings was sure to have something worth delving into. "I love these compilations 'cause you'll just hear something on them and then you can go and find out more about it," Braithwaite explained. He then shared how he discovered American sacred harp singing through another Lomax compilation. "I'd never heard anything like it...I tracked down a lot of that."

Mogwai was formed in 1995 by Stuart Braithwaite, Dominic Aitchison, and Martin Bulloch. They took their name from the creatures in the movie Gremlins. The group released their debut LP, Mogwai Young Team, in 1997. Kicking a Dead Pig: Mogwai Songs Remixed was released the following year, featuring remixes from the likes of Kevin Shields, Arab Strap, and Alec Empire. The band's current Mogwai - Every Country's Sunlineup solidified with the addition of Barry Burns prior to recording their sophomore LP, 1999's Come On Die Young. By their third album, Rock Action, Mogwai was moving away from guitars and incorporating more electronic instruments. Rock Action was their biggest commercial success to date, peaking at #23 on the UK album charts.

Having A Movie Moment With Jon Longhi: Blue Planet II & The Black Scorpion

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, July 30, 2018 07:18pm | Post a Comment

By Jon Longhi

Welcome to this month’s Having A Movie Moment with Jon Longhi, where I review recent Blu-ray releases. Both of these Blu-rays came out in the past three months.

Blue Planet II, BBC Earth:
At Amoeba Music we sell a lot of DVDs of abstract video set to psychedelic music that are used by Blue Planet IIpeople who are bombed on pot and psychedelics to blow their minds to. Well, those stoner viewers have found their new holy grail with Blue Planet II. This is one of the trippiest things I've ever seen; every episode is utterly surreal and mind bending, and the best part is there are no drugs involved -- this is pure straight up reality. The oceans are an alien world to us land dwellers and David Attenborough's high def cameras reveal this reality to a degree we've never seen before. Thanks to recent developments in technology and photography, this is the clearest we've ever seen the underwater realm. In all older ocean documentaries, the light and colors beneath the surface have always been muted or blurred due to that fact that cameras couldn't equal the details of human vision. But photography has finally caught up and all the scenes in Blue Planet II are as crystal clear as if you were there underwater viewing the events through a scuba diving mask. In fact, this Blu-ray is the new gold standard for high def. When I popped this in I couldn't believe how sharp and clear the pictures and details were, they were even better than other recent Blu-ray releases.

SHE, RKO

SheBy Kai Wada Roath
Ambassador of Confusion Hill and host of the Super Shangri-La Show

"I am yesterday, and today, and tomorrow. I am sorrow, and longing, and hope unfulfilled. I am Hash-A-Mo-Tep. She. She who must be obeyed! I am I."
~She, Queen Hash-A-Mo-Tep of Kor

It was during my time at Ahwahnee Junior high, in a charming California town named after ash trees, that the signs started appearing to me. The first sign was watching Nancy Kwan in her luxurious bath, rubbing her aging, yet mysteriously young looking body with Oriental Pearl Cream during the commercial breaks on channel 53.

The second sign, was being repeatedly zapped by Commander Borf's “Infanto Ray” and turning into a young Space Ace going through puberty at the Festival Game Palace.

The third sign was when I did a report in history on Ponce de Leon searching for the Fountain of Youth.

Then, still at age 13, I bought a cassette of the Hoodoo Gurus and first heard their song "SHE."

It was an epic fantasy love ballad that's lyrics I did not quite understand...and it would not be for another 20 years that I would put the connection of that song with H. Rider Haggard’s novel of the same name, after watching the 1945 version of the film, She, directed by the great Merian C. Cooper of King Kong fame. (And it would be 30 years after getting that tape, that I would find out the singer, Dave Faulkner, was the singer for the inspirational, late-70’s punk band The Victims.)

Jason Mantzoukas What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

We could barely keep up with actor & comedian Jason Mantzoukas on his recent visit to Amoeba Hollywood! He went digging through the bins, finding all sorts of records and films that have special meaning to him, waxing poetic in his own humorous way, and even giving post production directions to our video editor. The result is one of the most epic and entertaining What's In My Bag? episodes we've had the pleasure of producing.

How Did This Get MadeJason Mantzoukas began his career performing on a house team at the New York Upright Citizens Brigade Theater and he still regularly appears in the weekly Soundtrack show, where he and his teammates base their work off audience members' iPod playlists. Along with Paul Scheer and June Diane Raphael, he hosts the popular How Did This Get Made? podcast. Before his comedy career launched, he studied musicology in the Middle East as a Watson Fellow.

As an actor, Mantzoukas is instantly recognizable. He has appeared as Dennis Feinstein on Parks and Recreation, as Adrian Pimento on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and as Derek Hoffstetler on The Good Place. He plays the character of Rafi in the FX comedy series The League. Other notable credits include appearances in Sacha Baron Cohen‎'s The Dictator, The Kroll Show, Modern Familyand Broad City. He can be heard as the voice of the threatening, slimy Mr. Mucus in Mucinex commercials.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with The xx

Posted by Amoebite, July 17, 2018 02:53pm | Post a Comment

The xx What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Romy Madley Croft and Jamie Smith of The xx stopped by Amoeba Hollywood recently, digging through the bins and finding some cool records, T-shirts, and posters. "A band that we all really love is Chromatics," Croft told us as she pulled the Portland synth-pop band's In The City II EP out of her shopping bag. "I just love the instrumentals and stuff on here," she continued. "They have always been a big influence to us and they do a great cover of 'I'm On Fire' by Bruce Springsteen." Croft and Smith found a diverse mix of albums for our latest What's In My Bag? episode, explaining the personal significance of each and chiming in on each other's choices.

UK minimalist indie electro pop band The xx consists of vocalist/guitarist Croft, vocalist/bassist Oliver Sim, and producer Smith, aka Jamie xx. Influenced equally by post-punk and R&B, the band formed in 2005, when Croft and Sim attended school together. They posted their early work on their MySpace The xx - I see Youaccount, which attracted attention from the Young Turks label and led to the release of their critically-acclaimed debut LP xx in 2009. Seemingly overnight, The xx seemed to be taking over the world, with career-defining appearances at All Tomorrow's Parties, Coachella, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits on the books. In 2010, they took home the prestigious Mercury Prize.

Rewind To Short-Lived Seventies Dutch Hit Making Duo Mouth & MacNeal

Posted by Billyjam, July 12, 2018 09:00pm | Post a Comment
Mouth & MacNeal's Absolutely The Best - like their Singles collection - contains the hits
including the Dutch duo's international 1972 smash  "How Do You Do"

For this Throwback Thursday we rewind to the first half of the seventies decade to the Netherlands to where and when the short lived (1971-1974) fun pop Dutch duo Mouth & MacNeal cranked out a series of international singalong hits. These hits by the duo comprised of Big Mouth (Willem Duyn) and Maggie MacNeal (Sjoukje van't Spijker) can be found on the retrospective collections Absolutely The Best and Mouth & MacNeal The Singles. Both of those collections, in addition to the old school Dutch pop / rock various artists compilation Dutch Treats, include Mouth & MacNeal’s biggest and best known hit; "How Do You Do.” That 1972 single is an example of a perfectly structured singalong pop song complete with the slowdown and build up to the hit’s chorus. "How Do You Do” first topped the duo’s national chart before going on to become an international hit both in Europe and the US where it became a top ten Billboard hit that same year. In fact ”How Do You Do” was such a huge hit for the duo that they were often unfairly written off as one-hit wonders.

Missing for more than 90 years, the final parts of the silent Austrian film The City Without Jews were finally found in a Parisian flea-market. When the Filmarchiv Austria 2016 announced the rediscovery of the long missing scenes, a worldwide effort to complete the restoration was sparked. Over 700 individual donors supported the project, saving the remaining prints from chemical delay.
Based on the novel, The City without Jews written by Hugo Bettauer in 1922, satirizing an utopian idea of expelling the Jews from Vienna. The film adaptation by director Hans Karl Breslauer was accompanied in 1924 by sanctions by the National Socialists and in 1925 Bettauer was shot dead by a National Socialist. The rise of the NSDAP in Austria with means of terror resulted in the so-called Anschluss 1938. What followed was the expulsion and murder of Central European Jews in the Holocaust.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Wolf Parade

Posted by Amoebite, July 9, 2018 05:37pm | Post a Comment

Wolf Parade - What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Dan Boeckner and Arlen Thompson of Wolf Parade were at Amoeba Hollywood recently schooling us on some of the records that influenced them in their formative years, new records they've been getting into, and Canadian heroes that have been overlooked by the "arbitrators of cultural taste" in their own country. Take, for example, the industrial group Skinny Puppy. "I would argue that this is the most influential Canadian band of the 1980s," Boeckner proclaimed, calling them, "a totally misunderstood and under-appreciated band in its own country...without this band you wouldn't have Nine Inch Nails (and) Ministry." Boeckner goes on to explain that Canadian taste-makers have "pretty much erased these guys from the history books." There was much more to be said about all of the records picked by the two band mates, making for an insightful and fun What's In My Bag? interview.

Canadian indie rock band Wolf Parade formed in 2003 when former Frog Eyes member Spencer Krug found himself with three weeks to get a group together. He teamed up with Dan Boeckner (ex-Atlas Wolf Parade Cry Cry CryStrategic) and the pair began writing songs in Krug's apartment, accompanied by a drum machine. Arlen Thompson eventually took over percussionist duties. A year later, the group traveled to Portland to work with Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock on their self-titled Sub Pop debut EP. The current lineup solidified when Dante DeCaro (ex-Hot Hot Heat) signed on in 2005.

Ghost Ship Duo's Conviction on 36 Counts of Manslaughter Brings Little Closure While Time and Music Help In The Long Healing Process

Posted by Billyjam, July 4, 2018 11:31pm | Post a Comment

Tuesday's breaking news that Ghost Ship proprietors Derick Almena and Max Harris had been convicted on all 36 counts of manslaughter in a no-contest plea should have provided some sense of closure for
those still healing from losing loved ones in the deadly December 2nd 2016 Oakland warehouse fire.
Barrett Clark
"Sure those two guys get locked up for six or nine or how many years but that doesn't bring back to life the 36 beautiful artists taken. That's not justice and it's certainly not closure for us. That doesn't help in the slow healing process. Time heals. And music helps in the healing too," said one Oakland artist who lost two close friends in the fire and asked remain anonymous.

Indeed music heals and there's been an awful lot of Ghost Ship healing music released since the fire. Much like the unprecedented number of Ghost Ship benefit concerts, 18 and 19 months ago, there has also been a most unusual number of Ghost Ship musical tributes / benefit compilations. Scroll down to read more on these releases that have included the Oakland Love compilation LP and Ratskin Records' box set Rogue Pulse / Gravity Collapse. Located in East Oakland's Fruitvale district the converted warehouse live/work artist collective was described as a home, studio, venue, and safe space for local artists, filmmakers, painters, musicians, dancers, and their families. Tragically it was also a major fire hazard with its impromptu interior design constructed with no permits but with lots flammable wood.

The fire took place on the Friday night of December 2nd 2016 during the beginning stages of an all night music party thrown by 100% Silk (dance music imprint of the Not Not Fun). The fire and its deadly smoke (inhalation killed most) spread fast. In all it would take the lives of 36 people, ages 17 through 61, most of whom were musicians and artists. They included electronic artist and DJ Cherushii (Chelsea Dolan - pictured below) who also did a show on KALX. Three other volunteers at that UC Berkeley radio station were also killed in the fire: Griffin Madden (aka DJ Laura), Vanessa Plotkin, and Jennifer Morris. Amoeba Berkeley is a few blocks from KALX and countless people from KALX have worked at Amoeba or shopped there. That's how personal and close to home this tragedy struck. It seemed like everyone in the entire Bay Area knew someone who had perished in the Ghost Ship fire. Beyond the Bay like in NY and especially down in LA there was all these people who were connected with the Oakland arts collective. Different communities were devastated by the fire including the trans community.  Am the 36 were the three trans women Feral Pines, Cash Askew, and Em Bohlka.

Among the many friends of Amoeba in the fire was 22-year-old electronic musician Cash Askew (Them Are Us Too) and 35-year-old sound engineer Barrett Clark. Pictured above Clark, who was handling the mixing board for the 100% Silk event, frequently did sound engineering for Amoeba in-store shows at both the Amoeba Berkeley and San Francisco locations.
On Tuesday the Ghost Ship proprietors "master tenant” Derick Almena and “creative director” Max Harris, who were accused of creating the deadly firetrap, pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter charges for all 36 killed in a no plea deal in which Almena (48) will receive a nine-year sentence in county jail and Harris (28) a six year sentence. With good behavior each defendant, both incarcerated for this past year, could be released for the half the time of their sentences. By taking the plea deal the duo avoided what likely would have become a very drawn out and high-profile jury trial. With no trial they also avoided being in court for a long time and everyday facing the families and friends of the fire's victims. But now the victims' relatives and loved ones won't have the opportunity to have a day in court, and provide a sense of closure.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Act of Defiance

Posted by Amoebite, July 2, 2018 06:30pm | Post a Comment

Act of Defiance What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Henry Derek and Chris Broderick of metal band Act of Defiance were at Amoeba Hollywood recently for a cool What's In My Bag? interview. The band members' picks often went beyond the realm of metal and included artists like gospel-bluesman Washington Phillips, Beat writer William S. Burroughs, and performance artist Anna Homler, whose alter-ego Breadwoman Derek found particularly fascinating. "Apparently she was influenced by the population of homeless women in downtown Los Angeles," he told us, adding "she developed her own language that she sings in." Both members of the band had an eclectic mix of records, making for an interesting and entertaining video.

Act of Defiance Old Scars, New WoundsLos Angeles-based supergroup Act of Defiance fuses death metal, thrash, hardcore, and speed metal to create harsh, abrasive, extreme metal. Formed in 2014 after Megadeth guitarist Chris Broderick and drummer Shawn Drover both departed the group, Act of Defiance also features the talents of frontman Henry Derek (Scar the Martyr, Thrown Into Exile) and bassist Matt Bachand (Shadows Fall).
