Coral Castle

By Kai Wada Roath
Ambassador of Confusion Hill and host of the Super Shangri-La Show

"Built a moon,
For a rocking chair,
I never guessed it would
Rock her far from here.
Oh, oh, oh..."
~ "Sweet Sixteen," lyrics by Billy idol

In the land of Key lime pies and conch fritters, there is a little plot of land where Edward Leedskalnin Coral Castlewould mysteriously and single-handedly sculpt his rock castle from 1923-1951. Some folks claimed Ed used reverse magnetism and even supernatural mental-powers to move the giant stones...the very same powers that were perhaps used to build the pyramids of Egypt and erect the ancient megaliths of the British Isles (I wish I had these powers just to take out my trash cans Monday nights). Edward's creation would become known to all as the Coral Castle.

It is said that before leaving his home country of Latvia for the Sunshine State, Edward (who was was 26 at the time) was ditched at the alter by Agnes, his 16-year-old fiancée. Ed would reminisce about her for the rest of his life, always referring to her as his "Sweet Sixteen." In 1986, Billy Idol would write his tragic love song, "Sweet Sixteen," inspired after watching "The Castle of Secrets," an episode of Leonard Nimoy's In Search Of, based on Edward and his Coral Castle. If you still do not own the In Search Of DVD box set with all six seasons, then that is a shame. Go forth and invest in that treasure box, for it is pure wisdom!

Andy Jenkins' 2018 Spacebomb Debut "Sweet Bunch" Manages To Sound Refreshingly Familiar Yet Completely Original

Andy Jenkins "Sweet Bunch (feat. Matthew E. White)" from Sweet Bunch (Spacebomb Records)

Standout 2018 new indie rock artist Andy Jenkins' remarkable album Sweet Bunch  on Spacebomb Records is one of those rock rarities that simultaneously manages to sound both refreshingly familiar yet completely original. Examples of this abound throughout the Richmond VA singer-songwriter's just released nine track, 40 minute debut on such songs as "Let's Get Illuminated," "Ascendant Hog" and the Sweet Bunch title track. On that blues infused lead single (music video above) Jenkins is joined by Spacebomb label head / founder Matthew E. Wajatta (Reggie Watts & John Tejada) What's In My Bag?

Comedian/musician Reggie Watts and electronic artist and DJ John Tejada visited Amoeba Hollywood to do some record shopping and shared their deep knowledge and eclectic taste in our latest What's In My Bag? episode. The duo, whose new collaborative project is called Wajatta, dug through the bins and found some classic, obscure, and personally sentimental records.

Watts and Tejada met at an after-hours gig Tejada was DJing, their creative partnership culminating in their debut album, Casual High Technology, a soulful blend of classic house, Chicago footwork, and Balearic beats. After Wajatta - Casual High Technology a formidable career releasing music via electronic stalwarts like Kompakt, Pokerflat, Cocoon, Plug Research, Seventh City, Playhouse, Defected, and his own Palette label, this is Tejada's first release on the normally laughs-driven label Comedy Dynamics.

"You Can't Take Our Joy Away From Us. We're Still Here!" - LakeFest Oakland, Saturday June 23rd, 2018, 11am-7pm: All-Ages + Free

Posted by Billyjam, June 22, 2018 05:59pm | Post a Comment

“We want want to keep Oaklanders coming together to ensure a vibrant future for all”
- LakeFest Oakland’s mission statement

This weekend’s all inclusive, multi-cultural, community-driven, all-ages and free LakeFest Oakland (Lake Merritt Saturday 11am-7pm) could not have come at a more perfect time. From this past week’s hate-filled national rhetoric of dehumanizing asylum seekers and their separated children to the two recent well-publicized local hate acts by “Jogger Joe” and “BBQ Becky” of targeting homeless and African Americans respectively at the Oakland lake, LakeFest's positive, non-discriminatory event that warmly embraces all members of our society is most welcome!

Happening tomorrow, Saturday June 23rd, down by Lake Merritt Boating Center, LakeFest Oakland’s family-friendly event will include various fun activities, food and drink, plus of course music. Even better the talent packed event will showcase some of the best artists from the culturally diverse City of Oakland. Meanwhile LakeFest will also revive the spirit of the bygone (and missed) Festival At The Lake that ran from 1982 through 1997.

Leading the top five chart of the latest batch of hip-hop arrivals at Amoeba Music is the Living Legends' legendary emcee Eligh whose long awaited brand new solo album Last House On The Block (also on 2LP/vinyl) (Eligh Music) comes highly recommended. While offering up a diverse sounding mix of tracks, from throwback boom bap to new school West Coast sounding, Eligh ties it all together with his effortlessly high-caliber engaging flow. Further enhancing this 66 minute, 18 track album are his well chosen mic guests, several of whom are longtime collaborators of the emcee. Album guests include Evidence ("Burn"),  R.A. The Rugged Man and Eamon ("Still Chasing"), Max ZT  and Priya Darshini ("Thursday Child"),  Zion I ("Focused") and gratefully his longtime partner in rhyme in his Legends side-project duo The Grouch who collaborates along with Zion I's Zumbi on "Focused" as well as on "Pain on the Break." New 'What's In My Bag?' Episode with Kimbra

Posted by Amoebite, June 19, 2018 12:27pm | Post a Comment

Kimbra - What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

New Zealander singer/songwriter and actress Kimbra stopped by Amoeba Hollywood recently and showed us some of her favorite records, sharing her personal history with each one. "I was quite into punk rock around, you know, 15 and there was a band called The Mint Chicks that used to play in my hometown, Hamilton," she explained to us. "Ruban Nielson, who went on to create Unknown Mortal Orchestra, was the guitarist in that band." Holding up the band's 2016 album, Multi-Love, she went on to praise his songwriting ability and musicianship. "'Can't Keep Checking My Phone' is just such a funky song." Kimbra had lots of thoughtful insight into every record she picked, making for an interesting and personal What's In My Bag? episode.

Kimbra began writing songs when she was ten years old. As a child, she sang at sporting events and released her first music video, for the song "Smile" on the children's TV show What Now. On the Kimbra - Primal Heart - Amoeba Musicstrength of her second single, "Simply On My Lips," she signed with independent label and management group Forum 5 and began a series of high-profile collaborations that would launch her to stardom. Kimbra appeared on a track by Miami Horror ("I Look to You") before collaborating with Gotye on "Somebody That I Used to Know," which would eventually go multi-platinum and garner the duo awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the Grammys.

Each forthcoming 12" box set will correspond to the Depeche Mode (DM) album that the singles were originally culled from and will include a bounty of forgotten DM extended remixes.

The first two box sets in this new collector's edition series, that will feature audiophile-quality remastered audio tapes originally cut at Abbey Road Studios, will arrive in Amoeba Music on August 31st with the release of both the 12” singles from the band’s 1981 debut album Speak & Spell (also on LP/vinyl)  and from their 1982 sophomore album A Broken Frame. New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Ride

Ride What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Sometimes it takes a special moment to change your perception of a song you've never paid much attention to. In our new What's In My Bag? episode with the shoegaze legends Ride, bassist Steve Queralt recounted listening to music with Erol Alkan, the producer of their latest record, Weather Diaries. "One evening he decided to play 'Eagle' by ABBA, and cranked up the volume," Queralt told us, "and it just made you realize just how great ABBA are." The Oxford native grabbed ABBA: The Album, which features "Eagle" by the Swedish pop quartet, and explained, "now everyone kind of laughs at ABBA, but we all grew up with ABBA when we were kids. It's what my mum was playing all the time, so it's difficult to not like (them)."

English rock band Ride was formed in Oxford by longtime school friends Andy Bell and Mark Gardener, their college classmate Laurence Colbert, and Steve Queralt, the singles buyer at their local Our Price Ride Weather Diariesrecord shop. Inspired by loud art rock bands like My Bloody Valentine, The House of Love, The Stone Roses, and Sonic Youth, Ride became synonymous with the nascent shoegaze scene, although they tried to avoid any sort of label. The band made their live debut in 1988 at a holiday party hosted by North Oxfordshire College, where Bell, Gardener, and Colbert attended school. After Jim Reid of The Jesus and Mary Chain heard a track from their demo, the band piqued the interest of former JAMC manager Alan McGee, who signed Ride to his Creation Records label after they toured alongside The Soup Dragons in 1989.

Posted by Billyjam, June 13, 2018 03:58pm | Post a Comment

The trend of the past several years of new vinyl pressings overtaking new CDs been pressed up, in terms of favorable physical format, continues to grow each week with the number of hip-hop vinyl releases far outweighing that of CD releases each week in 2018. This top twenty list of hip-hop vinyl releases, in no particular order, includes new and recent vinyl pressings spanning the past several weeks up to the most recent date (6/8/18). As well as 12" albums these include some 7" releases such as UK mixed media producer / DJ Woody's Ear Wax 7" (Woodwurk),  Stro Elliot's Soul II Stro / The Egyptian Way (7")  (Street Corner Music) and  DJ Sausage Fingaz' battle DJ tool themed 1-2 Knockouts Vol. 1 (7") (Dinked Records).

The full-length album on vinyl titles in this list of 20 releases include both new 2018 (and some 2017) albums finally getting vinyl versions, as well as a grip of older era hip-hop albums getting reissued on vinyl after been out of print for a long time. Examples of these include previous decade hip-hop releases from Mobb Deep starring Havoc and the late great Prodigy (inc. 1999's Murda Muzik as 2LP pictured above and their 2001 album Infamy 2LP both via Sony Legacy), Diamond & The Psychotic Neurotics' golden era classic Stunts, Blunts & Hip Hop 2LP (Music On Vinyl), and the power duo of EPMD whose landmark albums, their 1988 debut  Strictly Business 2LP and 1989's Unfinished Business 2LP both recently reissued as by Capitol). Another recent reissue on vinyl is GURU's Jazzmatazz Vol. 1 [Deluxe Edition] Vinyl 3LP.  This expanded new deluxe triple vinyl set, via Virgin, revisits the late great Gang Starr emcee's early nineties side jazz project  with Branford Marsalis and others, Jazzmatazz.

Some Vikings for my Liking

Ambassador of Confusion Hill and host of the Super Shangri-La Show

The Vikings"Across the rainbow bridge of Asgard,
Where the booming heavens roar.
You'll behold in breathless wonder,
The God of Thunder, Mighty Thor!"
~ The Mighty Thor theme from the 1966 cartoon

When I was a kid of just 10 years old, I would ride my Huffy down to the docks with my crab net on my back and spend the day hauling up rock crabs to later throw in a boiling cauldron before having a feast with my nutcracker. This is not the case for Tony Curtis in The Vikings (1958) in which he is sentenced to death by being tied in a low pool to be eaten alive by crabs.

In my humble opinion, this movie is the best Viking movie to this day. I mean, it's a no-brainer, Kirk Douglas has one eye and seeks revenge, and Ernest Borgnine is his dad, drinking out of a horn ...and it's narrated by Orson Welles!

If you live near Bagdad by the Bay, you can see The Vikings on the big screen at the historic Balboa Theatre in San Francisco this coming Wednesday, June 13th at 7:30pm and also buy it on DVD or Blu-ray at Amoeba and keep it in your Odin's Treasure Vault at home.

In the number slot of this new Top 20 hip-hop album releases chart (video version), that spans album releases from the several weeks, is both the CD and vinyl versions of the late J Dilla's album Ruff Draft: Dilla's Mix / aka Dilla's Mix The Instrumentals LP/vinyl also on CD (PayDay). The vinyl version arrived into Amoeba on Friday (June 8th) following the 2CD version that dropped a few weeks previously.  Over an hour in length the album is the latest reissue version of Dilla’s album that was originally released back in 2003 as a ten track EP (reportedly recorded within a week). Then four years later following his tragic death, it was reissued as a full length expanded 2CD remastered album as the 2007 release via Stones Throw that most are familiar with. New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Necrobutcher of Mayhem

Necrobutcher of Mayhem What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

What does black metal legend Jørn "Necrobutcher" Stubberud go shopping for when he's at Amoeba San Francisco? The Mayhem bassist proved to have ecclectic tastes as he shopped before his in-store signing of his book, The Death Archives: Mayhem 1984-94, grabbing records like INXS' KickBringing up singer Michael Hutchence's unexpected death, Necrobutcher told us, "It's a different thing before and after the artist dies."

Mayhem De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Alive

Mayhem are no strangers to death, as not only did early singer Pelle “Dead” Ohlin take his own life in 1991, but Mayhem's bass player at the time, Varg "Count Grishnackh" Vikernes aka Burzum, murdered founding member Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth in 1993.

Necrobutcher is now the only remaining original member of Mayhem. As one of the founders of the band, he served as Mayhem's bassist from 1984-1991 and contributed to the 1987 Deathcrush EP. After the tragedies that struck the band between '91-'93, Necrobutcher reformed Mayhem in 1995, with a new lineup. His next studio release with the band was 1998's Wolf's Lair Abyss EP. He has since appeared on Mayhem's Grand Declaration of War (2000), Chimera (2004), Ordo ad Chao (2007), Esoteric Warfare (2014) and A Season in Blasphemy (2016). Live recordings include Live in Leipzig (1993), Dawn of the Black Hearts (1995), Mediolanum Capta Est (1999), Live in Marseille (2001), Live in Zeitz (2016), and De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Alive (2016). Necrobutcher has also performed with L.E.G.O., Kvikksølvguttene, Bloodthorn, and Checker Patrol.
