Wire Reissues

It's impossible to overstate the influence of English four-piece Wire on both the nascent punk and post-punk scenes. Steadfastly underground, the band has been churning out reliably innovative, under-the-radar releases for several decades since the release of their legendary debut, 1977's Pink Flag. Over the course of their first three albums, the band rapidly evolved from propulsive hardcore punk to moodier, dark post-punk, and into even more experimental art rock territory. Each album is a gem in its own right and in honor of the 40th anniversary of Pink Flag last year, the band is remastering and reissuing their early catalog with a handful of excellent extras.

On the reissue docket are standard vinyl and CD releases, plus a special deluxe edition CD version of each album that will include an 80-page book with rarely seen pictures from photographer Annette Green, lyric sheets, and text by music historian Jon Savage and English writer Graham Duff. Of course, there's bonus material aplenty, including singles, b-sides, never-before-released demos and alternate takes. The deluxe CD editions will be released on May 25, 2018 and the standard CD and LP versions are out June 22, 2018. All are available now for pre-order on Amoeba.com.

Here's why each one is a must-have for fans of atmospheric, intense rock 'n' roll.

Pink Flag

Pink Flag

As music writer/critic Robert Christgau famously remarked, Wire's punk debut is simultaneously raw and detached. Fiercely energetic, Pink Flag includes beloved tracks like "Ex Lion Tamer," "12 X U," "Mannequin," and "Three Girl Rhumba."

Wire's 1978 sophomore LP finds the band moving away from the tightly coiled intensity of their first album, getting darker and weirder on tracks like "Outdoor Miner," "I Am the Fly," and "Sand in My Joints." "Outdoor Miner" climbed its way into the UK singles chart, peaking at #51.

154

154

Named after the amount of shows the band had played by the point their third album was recorded in 1979, 154 is bleaker and artier than its predecessors. In spite of this, the LP reached #39, its highest rank in the UK album charts, off the strength of tracks "Two People in a Room," "The 15th," "A Mutual Friend," and "On Returning."
