Alice Bag What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Chicana punk legend Alice Bag visited Amoeba Hollywood recently and talked with us about the woman's narrative in rock and picked up albums by Javier Solis, Garbage, Chicano Batman, Shopping, and more in our latest What's In My Bag? episode.

Alice Bag (née Alicia Armendariz) was born and raised in East Los Angeles. While a teenager, she met fellow traveler Patricia Morrison through their shared love of glam rock. The pair founded their first band, Femme Fatale, which eventually evolved into revered first wave punk band The Bags. With Alice Alice Bag Blueprintand Patricia both taking the stage surname Bag, the band performed their first show at The Masque in the fall of 1977. The release of their 1978 Survive 7" helped establish the band as one of the most promising acts in the nascent LA punk scene. It was the only recording released during the band's lifespan.

The Bags officially called it quits in 1981. That year, Alice Bag made an appearance in Penelope Spheeris' punk rock doc The Decline of Western Civilization, along with other seminal LA punk bands like Germs, Black Flag, and X. In the following years, Bag formed deathrock band Castration Squad, Latin-influenced punk band Cholita! and Stay at Home Bomb, a group she formed with other rock 'n' roll scene parents. In 2011, she published a well-received memoir, Violence Girl: From East LA Rage to Hollywood Stage. In 2016, Alice Bag returned to music with her debut self-titled LP. Her sophomore album, Blueprint, was released on April 13, 2018.

In this episode, the musician, author, educator, and feminist archivist describes how she deliberately seeks out the woman's narrative. "I just feel like women don't tell their stories often enough," Alice Bag said as she recommended two excellent autobiographies by women in rock: Hit So Hard by Hole drummer Patty Schemel and Just Kids by Patti Smith. Another exciting pick for Alice Bag was the now-defunct Los Angeles punk band Sex Stains. "I keep it in my car and I play it all the time," she told us. "They know how to groove, they know how to rock, and they fit together like a perfect puzzle." She also describes how her musical choices vary depend on what activity she's doing. For making cocktails for your honey, Alice Bag selected Mexican bolero singer Javier Solis, whose "velvety voice" is "very romantic."
