This weekend belongs to longtime Bay Area hip-hop DJ Platurn (Oakland Faders, 45 Sessions) who, like all the best DJ/producers, is a vinyl obsessive crate digger. He is also an endlessly talented studio remixer/producer as well as an equally super skilled party rockin’ DJ. Tonight, Friday at Oakland’s Uptown (9-2) the DJ will be rockin the crowd, along with DJ sets by Inka One and special guest of the night, veteran producer/DJ Prince Paul who flew in for tonight’s big party: Native Tongues Appreciation Night Five Year Anniversary.

Tonight's Oakland event is also the official release party for DJ Platurn’s new album release Breaking The Ice. If you miss tonight’s show (likely to sell out) or you want to see the two DJs more than once, tomorrow afternoon at 4pm (Sat Mar 24) at Amoeba Berkeley DJ Platurn and Prince Paul will be doing a DJ mini-set, as well as signing digibook copies of Platurn's new Breaking The Ice album that's for sale at Amoeba Berkeley, where you'll also find lots of classic Prince Paul releases in the crates.

Breaking The Ice packaging includes 16 pages of liner notes penned by David Ma plus rare photos courtesy of Platurn's father Magnus Thordarson. Check out the mini-documentary video above on the back story to Platurn's hunt for that perfect Icelandic beat for Breaking The Ice, produced entirely by his brother Petur Magnusson.

It’s already five years since Platurn, who once worked in the hip-hop department at Amoeba Berkeley, released his sick ass mix; This Is De La Heaven Pt.2  The new Breaking The ice may feature De La Soul producer Prince Paul, but musically the Bay by way of Iceland DJ takes it back to his roots.  Rare beat records from an Iceland of decades ago the music on this mix comes in part from Platurn's pops who was a DJ/promoter and musically influential figure in Iceland. But much of the music that found its way onto this new mix  were the results of twelve  tireless years of crate digging by Platurn, along with his cousin Sveimhugi back Iceland who unearthed a treasure trove of  obscure funk, soul, psych, disco, and rhythmically driven records from Iceland made back in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Clocking in at just under and hour and a half Breaking The Ice packs an impressive seventy of these rare Icelandic records into its hypnotic mix.

As for what Platurn has to say about his musical hero Prince Paul (Stetsasonic, De La Soul, Gravediggaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School) who DJs with him at Uptown tonight and Amoeba Berkeley tomorrow afternoon: “Few cats as prolific as this dude, sample game heavy, funny as fuck, and a certifiably decent human being to boot. Paul is one of the best hip-hop producers of all time in my book,” said DJ Platurn while also supplying the Amoeblog with his Prince Paul Top 15 Random Favorites List (In No Particular Order) below.
