Jawbreaker What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Legendary punk band Jawbreaker went shopping at Amoeba Hollywood recently and sat down with us for a What's In My Bag? interview. Singer/guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach and drummer Adam Pfahler were full of dry wit and insight as they gave us a peek into their musical tastes. "I was a little bit overwhelmed because when you come to Amoeba. It's like going to Costco," said Pfahler. "If you don't have a list you're fucked."

Jawbreaker Dear YouJawbreaker was formed in 1986 by New York University students Blake Schwarzenbach (guitar/vocals), Chris Bauermeister (bass), and Adam Pfahler (drums). Considered to be one of the progenitors of the emo scene, the band attracted a cult following thanks to their pop sensibilities and poetic, personal lyrics. The band released their debut LP, Unfun, after moving to Los Angeles in 1990.

Two years later, the trio was in San Francisco, where they released the Bivouac LP. In 1993, they toured with Nirvana and had a major commercial breakthrough with the release of 24 Hour Revenge Therapy in 1994. The band had attracted enough attention to sign to a major label for 1995's Dear You. The band broke up a year later, with members involved in new projects Jets to Brazil, J Church, and Whysall Lane.

Having reunited last year after a 20-year absence, the band has been playing acclaimed shows in Chicago, San Francisco, and Brooklyn. Los Angeles fans will get their chance to see Jawbreaker perform when their three night residency kicks off at the Hollywood Palladium on March 8th. The first two nights -- Thursday, March 8 and Friday, March 9 -- are sold out online, but you can still get tickets in-store at Amoeba Hollywood!

In this What's In My Bag? episode, Blake Schwarzenbach and Adam Pfahler explored their softer and harder sides. Schwarzenbach hadn't heard Hesitation Marks by Nine Inch Nails, but being a big fan he was confident it would be a good one. "I really love With Teeth, a kind of more recent one," he told us, adding, "[Trent Reznor] always does really cool things with sound." Pfahler was happy to find a copy of Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk. "I'm really excited about it because apparently everyone takes on a chapter, and kind of writes from their perspective," he said, joking, "maybe it's like the Rashomon of L.A. punk."

Schwarzenbach also grabbed albums by Sinead O'Connor and Lebanese oud player Marcel Khalife, while Pfahler picked up Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. and Julien Baker's 2015 debut album, Sprained Ankle, which he found out about after seeing a YouTube clip of Baker covering a Jawbreaker song.
