Salute To Artists Already Gone in 2018 inc. Tribute To Edwin Hawkins (74) + Dolores O’Riordan (46) [Top 5 & Top 15 Video Version]

Posted by Billyjam, January 18, 2018 05:33pm | Post a Comment
Oakland's Edwin Hawkins (best known for the crossover hit "Oh Happy Day" with the Edwin Hawkins Singers) died this week at age 74, making him one of too many artists  we've already lost in 2018.

With this Monday’s passing of both Oakland gospel legend Edwin Hawkins (74) and Irish female rock vocal powerhouse / The Cranberries lead singer Dolores O’Riordan (46), this new year of 2018  is off to a bad start. Only halfway into January and already a significant number of artist deaths is mounting.  Other talents to have passed on this year include radio artist and writer Joe Frank (79) who also died on Monday, blues, gospel and RnB/soul singer/songwriter Denise LaSalle (78), and  Motörhead guitarist 'Fast' Eddie Clarke (67) who is pictured right with Motörhead circa 1980 L-R along with Lemmy Kilmister (who died December 2015) and Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor (who died Nov. 2015). Other artists who have passed on already in 2018 include The Moody Blues founding member Ray Thomas (76),  iconic French pop singer France Gall (70),  actor/singer Jerry Van Dyke (86), Black Sabbath and Judas Priest producer Chris Tsangarides (61), soul singer Betty Willis (76), producer and songwriter Rick Hall (85) of FAME Studios, and Juilliard String Quartet founding member, violinist and composer Robert Mann  (97).

Hiss Golden Messenger What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Want some excellent gospel music recommendations? Look no further than our latest What's In My Bag? episode featuring North Carolina indie folk band Hiss Golden Messenger. Lead singer/songwriter MC Taylor and touring collaborator Phil Cook raided Amoeba San Francisco's gospel section, finding some truly magnificent records, including a collection by Alex Bradford, who Cook described as "a precursor to Little Richard." Along with bandmate Scott Hirsch, the band found some killer records and shared their passion and enthusiasm with us.

Hiss Golden Messenger was founded in 2007 by MC Taylor and Scott Hirsch. The pair had relocated to Durham, NC after growing up in California and playing in hardcore band Ex-Ignota and indie rock group The Court & Spark. After the dissolution of the latter band, Taylor and Hirsch began releasing Hiss Golden Messenger Hallelujah Anyhowwork on Taylor's label Heaven & Earth Magic Recording Company. In 2009, Hiss Golden Messenger's debut LP Country Hai East Cotton was released in a limited run of 500. A selection of songs from this first album was rechristened From Country Hai East Cotton and released on the Black Maps label in 2011, following the success of their first international release, 2010's Bad Debt.

Another "Best Of" 2017" from The Choice Bin/Rick Frystak

Posted by Rick Frystak, January 18, 2018 01:45pm | Post a Comment

This album, My Foolish Heart by Ralph Towner, could be my favorite release of 2017. Jazz meets classical concepts via virtuosic nylon string guitar impressions of Bill Evans' work. Bravo! Here's more:

Allan Holdsworth

Allan Holdsworth - The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever

A 12-CD box set of all of Allan’s original domestic releases in mini-LP style covers and exclusive 40-page booklet in the box! The most beautiful, terrifying and harmonically fascinating jazz fusion electric guitar and guitar synthesizer playing you will ever hear, sometimes a caged animal roaring to be released, sometimes like a butterfly landing on a lover's tear, with sensitive and sensational accompaniment. Allan passed away 2 weeks after this release, and I know he loved that it had come out and been made available. This music will go backout of print, so enjoy this while you can. A 12-LP vinyl box is out soon!

Amoeba Music is proud to co-present two stellar musical events: Epic Rap Battles of History Live and Smells Like the '90s: A Night of '90s Music and Comedy!Epic Rap Battles of History

Great American Music Hall
Jan. 26th (two shows: 7:30 & 10:00 pm)
Tickets
The record-breaking digital series Epic Rap Battles of History, created by Peter Shukoff (aka Nice Peter) and Lloyd Ahlquist (aka EpicLLOYD), features comedic rap battles between historical and/or pop culture figures - such as Albert Einstein vs. Stephen Hawking, James Bond vs Austin Powers, Steve Jobs vs. Bill Gates, and Jim Henson vs Stan Lee. The series, which airs on the YouTube channel /ERB, is currently the most-viewed format on YouTube on a per-episode basis. The series has garnered over three billion views and more than 14 million subscribers, and has been nominated for numerous awards including the Emmys. Musician, comedian and actor Nice Peter, and comedian and emcee EpicLLOYD first met freestyling on a porch in Chicago. EpicLLOYD recruited Nice Peter to join the improv comedy group Mission IMPROVable, which he helped found at the University of Massachusetts and later expanded across the country. In 2009 the improv group began the M.i. Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica, CA and after separate moves to Los Angeles, Nice Peter and EpicLLOYD connected again in the comedy circuit performing at the club.In 2010 Nice Peter, already a well-established YouTube personality, suggested that one of the live segments he, EpicLLOYD and MC Mr. Napkins (Zach Sherwin) were performing—an improv rap show that featured comedic, poignant altercations between two characters suggested by the audience—was better suited as a digital format. Tapping into his growing YouTube fan base, Nice Peter went to his channel subscribers for potential matchup ideas. Premiering on Nice Peter’s channel in September 2010 as Epic Rap Battles of History, John Lennon vs. Bill O’Reilly, the first battle in the series, was an instant hit. It was Episode #2 though, Adolf Hitler vs. Darth Vader, that became a viral sensation—with now over 96 million views. Epic Rap Battles of History has since featured appearances from hugely popular stars including Weird Al Yankovic, Snoop Dogg, T-Pain, Key & Peele, Rhett and Link, George Watsky and DeStorm Power, among others.

Oakland Museum’s Winter 2018 Friday Nights @ OMCA Series Kicks Off January 12th

Posted by Billyjam, January 10, 2018 05:33pm | Post a Comment

This Friday evening, January 12th 5-9pm, the Oakland Museum of CA (OMCA) is set to launch its new 2018 Winter Season of Friday Nights @ OMCA. Expanding upon the concept of the once a month First Fridays into a weekly series, Friday Nights @ OMCA include  music (DJs include resident dION dECIBELS who specializes in hip-hop, funk, & soul), dance lessons, various food trucks, and additional art. That's in addition to the regular presentations at the East Bay museum which bills itself as "the museum of us" and is has built a rep for its interactive exhibits covering art, history and science. Even better is that Friday Nights @ OMCA offer half price admission (and free for ages 18 and under) so it’s a good opportunity to check out the downtown Oakland museum's ever changing exhibits. Currently on display is their latest; Take Root: Oakland Grows Food. More akin to a how-to class, this unique for a museum exhibit is a hands-on display that features tips from farmers and community growers on the health, environmental and economic benefits of DIY food provisions. This exhibit, like all of OMCA’s community themed presentations, is geared for all ages to learn constructive things from.

Twelve Great Post-Rock / Psychedelic / Jazz / Avant-Garde / Experimental Albums That Are Perfect For Thinking About Life & Other Important Stuff

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, January 9, 2018 07:47pm | Post a Comment

By Michael Henning

This list is a bit eclectic musically, with a number of styles and genres represented. However, the albums here are held together by a common thread: they all contain music that is excellent for thinking. Sure, you can think while listening to pretty much anything, but these 2017 releases are guaranteed to take your mind on a journey through inner space. They will undoubtedly lead you to some interesting places, so check them all out and see where your mind goes... just close your eyes, relax, and float away on a cloud of sound.

Cornelius, Mellow Waves

12.  Cornelius - Mellow Waves (Warner Music Japan)

A triumphant return for this Japanese artist, his first new proper (non-soundtrack) album since 2006's Sensuous. As the title perhaps indicates, this new one finds him mellowing a bit, but his penchant for slightly skewed pop music is still here. Some odd time signatures lead to interesting places, and his distinctly Japanese sensibilities are on full display again. Overall, this is an enjoyable and pleasant ride through the universe of quirky electronic-tinged pop we are used to from him. Although it might not be his best record, it is a very strong effort, and it fares quite well when compared to his earlier masterpieces Fantasma and Point.
Do Make Say Think

11.  Do Make Say Think - Stubborn Persistent Illusions (Constellation)

Kitchens of Distinction Vinyl Reissues Coming Soon

Posted by Amoebite, January 9, 2018 04:27pm | Post a Comment

Kitchens of Distinction Vinyl Reissues

Cult favorite post-punk band Kitchens of Distinction burned fast and bright, releasing four excellent and atmospheric LPs between the period of 1989-1994. The band's first self-released single, "The Last Gasp Death Shuffle," landed them a deal with British indie label One Little Indian. Their first singles for the label -- "Prize" and "The 3rd Time We Opened the Capsule" -- made their way onto NME's 1992 list of the 100 Best Indie Singles Ever. Unabashedly political, the band were shoegaze before there was shoegaze, with an out-and-proud frontman. Although they didn't always get the props they deserved then, four new reissues coming January 19, 2018 should go a long way toward introducing the band to fans of swirling guitars, passionate vocals, and clever lyrics.

You can pre-order them now at Amoeba.com and they'll ship for free to the U.S.!

2018 Death of The Moody Blues Founder Ray Thomas Follows A Year Of The Passing Of Too Many Music Greats

Posted by Billyjam, January 9, 2018 03:59pm | Post a Comment

The passing of The Moody Blues founding member Ray Thomas, whose Jan 4th death was announced two days ago, follows an intense year in which we lost too many other music greats; many of whom are saluted in this Amoeblog. In 1964 flute player and vocalist Ray Thomas formed the British rock band The Moody Blues who would go onto to worldwide fame with such hits as "Go Now" (their 1965 breakout #1 hit single), "Nights in White Satin,” "Tuesday Afternoon,"  and "Question.” Coincidentally the Moody Blues will be inducted into Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April.

In addition to Thomas, others who’ve already died in the first week of 2018 include iconic French pop singer France Gall, actor/singer Jerry Van Dyke, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest producer Chris Tsangarides, soul singer Betty Willis who according to OC Patch was murdered, producer/songwriter Rick Hall of FAME Studios, and founding member of the Juilliard String Quartet, influential violinist and composer Robert Mann who died at age 97 one week ago on New Year’s Day.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with HAIM

HAIM What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

HAIM recently visited Amoeba Hollywood for a special album release event and made time for some record shopping while they were here. In this What's In My Bag? episode, the bandmates and sisters give us a peek into some of the music and movies from their childhood, including Donna Summer's Love To Love You Baby, which guitarist/keyboardist Alana explains was often played when they were washing dishes. "I have great memories of drying," she said, adding that she was never a washer. "It's a great drying tempo."

Los Angeles pop rock band HAIM features Este Haim (bass), Alana Haim (guitars/keyboards), and Danielle Haim (lead vocals/guitar). The sisters began their musical careers early, backing their HAIM Something To Tell Youparents Moti and Donna in a family cover band called Rockinhaim. Este and Danielle performed together in pop band Valli Girls in the mid-'00s, releasing tracks on soundtrack and comp albums before Danielle departed to tour as a guitarist with Jenny Lewis and Julian Casablancas. In 2012, the women formed HAIM, releasing the Forever EP and attracting attention through a series of buzzed about appearances at SXSW which led to a deal with Polydor and a management contract with Jay-Z's Roc Nation.

Twelve Great Song-Oriented Albums of 2017

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, January 8, 2018 06:05pm | Post a Comment

By Michael Henning

I'm generally not that into traditional "song-oriented" music, finding myself more interested in music that is either instrumental (Ambient, Electronic, Experimental, etc.) or music that features singing in languages other than English (International and global sounds, both old and new). This year, however, I found myself enjoying a lot more music in this vein than usual. Here are a dozen great new albums from 2017 that worked wonders within the confines of rock/pop/folk music, bringing a freshness to the craft that makes them all deserving of recognition and attention.

Acetone

12. Acetone1992-2001 (Light in the Attic)

Nice career-spanning retrospective from this underrated California-based group. Their lazy, laid-back music fused indie rock with folk and country influences, and this well-curated compilation mines their catalog and comes up with some real gold.

Amoeba Hollywood's Top 50 Sellers of 2017

Amoeba Hollywood's top 50 sellers of 2017

Without a doubt, our customers love Kendrick Lamar and Mac DeMarco. They both had three albums appear on our list of the best-selling albums of 2017. Among the classic best-sellers like Michael Jackson's Thriller and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon were debut albums from Khalid and SZA. New anniversary reissues were a hot ticket in 2017, with the 50th anniversary editions of Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band selling especially well.

Read on to see the full list of Amoeba Hollywood's Top 50 Sellers of 2017.

Khalid American Teen

50. Khalid - American Teen (Released March 2017)

Singer/songwriter Khalid's debut album features the hit single "Location," with its atmosphere of stoned partying, chill vibes, and romantic longing. Treading somewhere in the realm of neo-soul hip hop and unbridled sunshiny pop, American Teen rejects any notion of nihilism and bitterness to create an album that's pure happiness. Bay Area fans were treated to a very special acoustic performance by Khalid at Amoeba SF back when his album first dropped.

Noir City

Noir City, the most popular film noir festival in the world, returns to San Francisco's majestic Castro The Man Who Cheater HimselfTheatre for its 16th edition, January 26-February 4, 2018. "Film Noir from A to B" presents 24 classic noirs as they were experienced on their original release, pairing a top-tier studio "A" with a shorter, low-budget second feature, or "B" film. In addition to the 12 chronologically-programed double bills, Noir City will feature three book signings: a panel of Noir City e-magazine contributors will sign copies of This Gun For Hirethe new 2018 Noir City Annual 10 on Saturday, January 27; Alan K. New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Eddie Richards and Steve Bug

Posted by Amoebite, January 2, 2018 07:00pm | Post a Comment

Eddie Richards and Steve Bug Amoeba Music What's In My Bag?

Influential house music DJs Steve Bug and Eddie Richards teamed up for an Othersound event in Los Angeles recently and, luckily for us, also stopped into Amoeba Hollywood for a What's In My Bag? video. The two mused over records that shaped their musical tastes and discussed how the DJ scene has changed over the years. "Nowadays everyone's just staring at the DJ, instead of listening to the music and getting into it," Bug lamented after finding a 12" single that reminded him of his first club experience in the late '80s. "At the time it was normal that people would dance facing each other," he continued. Richards shared the same sentiment, saying, "I'd prefer, actually, to be out of the way and for people to face one another." Between their stories and commentaries the two made for an interesting and educational interview.

British DJ Richards has been active in the dance scene since the 1980s and is sometimes referred to as the "godfather of house." At times going under the monikers Evil Eddie, Jolly Roger, and Kode, Richards became a prominent mover-and-shaker thanks to a residency at Camden Palace in London. He went on to perform at legendary events at Clink Street, Heaven, and Manchester's Hacienda. "Acid Man," released in 1988 under his Jolly Roger alias, reached number 23 in the UK charts and has become a club classic. He has released work via End Recordings, Hypervinyl, Matter/Form, SoCo Audio, Northern Lights, LHB, and through his own labels Lunar Tunes, dy-na-mix, and Storm. He spins regularly at London clubs Wiggle and Fabric.

Ten Lovely Ambient Albums of 2017, For When You Want to Get Mellow

10 Ambient Albums of 2017

By Michael Henning

Everybody needs to unwind at some point, whether it's at the end of a long week of work, a stressful day where things feel like they are getting out of control, or even just hearing about another frustrating development on the political front. When you start to feel the need to mellow out, these ten lovely ambient albums released in 2017 will help you to calm down and really relax. Or, if you're already pretty chill, they will help you to achieve ice cold status, like a polar bear eating an ice cream sandwich on top of a glacier.

Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society

10.  Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society - Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society (Six Degrees)

Lovely languid clouds of synthesizer melodies from this duo, which includes Bombay Dub Orchestra main man Garry Hughes. Where that project focuses on global fusion beats with eastern-influenced orchestral arrangements, this is simply two guys making simple ambient music with a large collection of synths. The mellow works on this CD are very nice for nighttime listening, or a pleasant way to start your day in a quiet introspective mode.
Secret Pyramid

9.  Secret Pyramid - Two Shadows Collide (Ba Da Bing)
