Despite Negative Publicity, Rolling Loud Bay Area Festival Was Peaceful & Positive Event [Photo Version + SoCal Dec 16/17 Lineup]

Despite the predominantly negative press that the recent Bay Area stop of the Rolling Loud hip-hop festival received, the Miami-founded festival (October 21st & 22nd in the Bay & scheduled next for SoCal December 16th & 17th) was an overall well behaved, peaceful music-loving affair. With a line-up of mostly new generation acts catering to a young, enthusiastic audience present to simply party (some too much) and enjoy the music, the majority’s good conduct was marred by the bad behavior of a handful. The two-day, two stages at Mountain View’s Shoreline Amphitheater included memorable performances from such artists as Travis Scott, ScHoolboy Q, Lil Uzi VertYoung Thug21 Savage, Lil Yee, Lil Wayne and the Bay Area’s own Nef The Pharaoh.

That aforementioned bad press, which was further sensationalized with accompanying viral videos via social media, was comprised of three main incidents. Primarily was East Bay artist Lil B (The Based God) getting beat down backstage by Bronx NY's
A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and his entourage of approximately a dozen young males. Then there was Florida artist XXXtentacion (aka X)  hitting a fan with his microphone in the sort-of mosh pit in front of the stage that he descended into. Note that since then the 19 year old artist, who has a track record of getting into trouble, announced that he was quitting the music biz. However he is still listed as a performer on the upcoming Rolling Loud SoCal festival in two months from now. The third, less serious, but nonetheless heavily publicized incident was an overly enthusiastic Bay Area fan bum-rushing the stage during SoCal artist ScHoolboy Q’s Saturday set and being roughly dragged offstage by security.

Bay Area photographer James Mak of Joysco Photos, who took all photos of the event for this Amoeblog, pointed out that “the fights were minor and no one really noticed them at the time” and that the audience, whom he accurately summed up as “high school senior to college” ages were “not troublemakers at all.”
Photographer James Mak also pointed out that, despite the 50+ different acts booked between the Loud and Wav stages, that it “impressively ran on schedule both days.”  Making that fact even more impressive was that it catered to a number of last minute changes in the lineup. Those included the eleventh hour cancellation of PnB Rock’s set (reportedly a suspect in the backstage Lil B beatdown) and the last minute cancellation of Lil B’s set.  The former Pack member, who did announce onstage he was not performing due to getting beaten and his gear stolen, was himself was a last minute addition to the bill in place of Ski Mask The Slump God.

Another last minute addition to the fest was East Bay artist Kreayshawn who took old friend Lil B’s place; her presence helping to unbalance the festival's male dominated ratio. Among Rolling Loud's few other females on stage was Epic Records’ rising young star Kodie Shane from mentor / fellow Rolling Loud performer Lil Yachty's Sailing Team crew. The 19  year old Atlanta female rapper/singer is almost a full decade younger than Kraeyshawn. And while the 28 year old “Gucci Gucci” star is by no means old, by Rolling Loud standards with many artists aged 19 to 21, along with the handful of other artists over age 25, she was considered such by the festival’s young participants and attendees.  No wonder then that Day Two headliner Lil Wayne, at the ripe old age of 35, was referred to as an “OG” by many at Rolling Loud.

The next Rolling Loud festival is Rolling Loud SoCal scheduled for in two months time for the weekend before Christmas, Saturday and Sunday December 16th and 17th, at the NOS Events Center located at 689 S E St., San Bernardino, CA 92408. While many of the same artists that played the Bay Area will overlap on the SoCal festival, there’s several different acts too including Future and Rae Sremmurd. Flyer below and more info + tix here.
