How to Help Victims of Hurrican Harvey

A week after Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast, residents are still stranded without shelter, food, and potable water. As rescue teams and authorities search for survivors, the death toll continues to climb (40 storm-related deaths reported as of this posting). Seeing images in the news of the devastation is heart-breaking and we all want to help, but it can be difficult to know where your money makes the most impact.

We've compiled a list of some of the more targeted organizations collecting donations. We hope it helps you make an informed decision.

Direct ReliefDirect Relief
Direct Relief is currently on the ground in Texas, supporting healthcare facilities in the storm’s path by providing medicines and supplies. An emergency shipment went out Friday, which bolsters pre-positioned resources already in the hands of providers statewide. Direct Relief’s Hurricane Preparedness Program, which equips clinics with essential medical supplies, provides access to medicines to treat both chronic and acute conditions

GoFundMe
Donate to the Direct Impact Fund in partnership with GoFundMe. Your tax-deductible donation will go directly to support individuals with verified campaigns on GoFundMe.

Houston Food Bank
HFB will provide food and supplies in the short term and for many months to come to residents in southeast Texas who will struggle to rebuild their lives.

Dax Pierson & Suki O'Kane To Join KALX's DJ Carnacki In Advance of Their Performances @ 2017 SF Electronic Music Festival [Sept. 8 -10]

Posted by Billyjam, August 29, 2017 04:20pm | Post a Comment
Multitalented musician/producer and extended Amoeba family member Dax Pierson will be among the performers at the upcoming 2017 San Francisco Electronic Music Festival. Other Festival performers scheduled include musician and mixed media artist Suki O'Kane. In advance of their respective sets at the 18 year old West Coast music festival, that’s taking place from September 8th thru 9th at La Brava, both artists (pictured left) will be stopping by KALX radio 90.7FM in Berkeley at 9:30pm tonight (8/29) for an interview with DJ Carnacki. A longtime ambassador of local left-field, envelope-pushing artists, as well as a revered underground experimental fellow East Bay musician himself, DJ Carnacki aptly describes Suki O'Kane as “a classically trained mallet percussionist, composer and instigator working with artists from a wide array of of music, movement, expanded cinema and public art genres.”

Meanwhile Dax Pierson, who worked at Amoeba Berkeley for many years, is  best known for his central role in pioneering experimental hip-hop collective/record label Anticon. As a key member of the two-decade strong  collective he is known for his membership and/or contributions to such Anticon acts as Odd Nosdam, Themselves (producer Jel and emcee Doseone), 13 & God (Themselves + The Notwist from Germany), and Subtle (the sextet also featuring Dose and Jel along with Jordan Dalrymple, Alexander Kort and (another Amoeba family member) Marty Dowers. The latter two groups were co-founded by Pierson. His other many artist collaborations include recording for albums by such artists as Beck, Bart Davenport, and Alias & Tarsier.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with K.Flay

Posted by Amoebite, August 29, 2017 01:05pm | Post a Comment

K.Flay What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Alt-pop/hip-hop artist K.Flay visited Amoeba Hollywood recently to perform songs from her new album, Every Where is Some Where. While she was here, she grabbed a few records by some of her favorite bands and chatted with us about getting over her fear of heavy metal. Pulling out Metallica, the self-titled, fifth, and best-selling album for the legendary heavy metal band, K.Flay attributed her recent interest in heavy music to playing on the Warp Tour. "I realized there's so much cool, complex stuff that's part of metal."

K.Flay is the stage name of genre-hopping American songwriter and vocalist Kristine Meredith Flaherty. She began writing music in 2003, when she enrolled at Stanford University. Her early work was a response to the "simplistic, misogynistic, and formulaic" rap songs played on the radio. She released a mixtape called Suburban Rap Queen in 2005 and then began performing live.

K.Flay Every Where Is Some WhereAfter a string of self-released EPs and mixtapes, K.Flay signed to RCA in 2012, releasing two EPs for the label: 2012's Eyes Shut (featuring production from The Prodigy's Liam Howlett) and 2013's What If It Is. After leaving RCA, she crowdfunded 2014's Life As a Dog, which reached number 14 on the Billboard Rap Albums chart and number 2 on the Heatseekers chart. In 2015, she collaborated with Louis the Child on their track "It's Strange," which peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and received extra attention after it was praised by Taylor Swift. In 2016, K.Flay signed to Interscope subsidiary Night Street Records for the release of her EP Crush Me. In spring 2017, she released her second full-length, Every Where Is Some Where.

Hip-Hop Rap Up: 08:27:17: Fashawn, Grieves, 21 Savage & Metro Boomin, Hiero Day 2017 Line-up, New Top Five, Super Cat reissue +

Posted by Billyjam, August 27, 2017 11:31am | Post a Comment

Accurately self-described as the “annual outdoor festival, concert, food, and block party where thousands come to celebrate all that is good about Oakland” Hiero Day 2017 is just over one week away. Now in its sixth year, the upcoming lineup may not be quite as star-studded an event as Hiero Day 2016 was. But it’s still a not to be missed event presenting a nice cross-section of artists: both local and national. In addition to a closing performance from the longtime Oakland extended hip-hop crew who created the event that bears the festival’s name, there’s a rich diverse lineup of emcees and DJs planned for the day-long, multi-stage event that happened last few years in area roughly between Jack London Square and the West Oakland BART but this year has moved a little bit to a new location in West Oakland at 18th and Poplar streets.

Acts on the announced upcoming lineup include such emcees as Dead Prez, Bun BRas Kass, Lil B, and G Perico, as well as such DJs as (the DJ turned MC doing a DJ set) DJ Quik, king of the rare 45s Breakbeat Lou, Sean G, Toro y Moi, D-Sharp, Mind Motion, Amoeba Hollywood’s own Monalisa (pictured right) and the two multitalented Bay Area DJ crews Triple Threat DJs and the Oakland Faders. See flyer below for the full lineup. Tix for the all ages event (doors open at 10am for 11am to 7pm event on Monday September 4th).

Limited Edition Twin Peaks vinyl

With only a few episodes left in the long-awaited limited event TV run (aka Season 3) of Twin Peaks, it's time to face the truth that this might be it. And of course, no more dreamy closing numbers at the Roadhouse. But wait! There is something to hold onto, something to spin on your record player on those impending cold, Twin Peaks-less nights -- something that can make the magic last a little bit longer. Because music IS magic, right? In this case, it comes in the form of two indie exclusive color variants to the show's soundtrack and score LPs, coming September 22nd.

You can pre-order them now on Amoeba.com and they'll ship FREE to U.S. addresses. But hurry, these limited edition LPs won't last long! (Limit 1 per customer, please.)

"Unleashed" With Director Finn Taylor at Roxie Theater, August 26 & 27

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, August 24, 2017 01:47pm | Post a Comment

UnleashedWe here at Amoeba Music know that we have some versatile and attractive bags, but imagine our surprise when we discovered that our bags were being put to entirely hitherto unforeseen use in the new film Unleashed by Bay Area director Finn Taylor (Dream with the Fishes).

In this new interspecies comedy, Emma (played by Kate Micucci of Garfunkel and Oates) moves to San Francisco after a massive betrayal by her boyfriend (Josh Brener, AKA "Big Head" of Silicon Valley) with only her beloved pets Ajax (Justin Chatwin), a golden-eyed cat, and Summit (Steve Howey), an energetic mutt, in tow. One night, drawn by the light of a Supermoon, Emma’s pets escape into the night and are transformed into full-grown men.

And that's where the Amoeba bag comes to be important:

Unleashed

For a film that appears to (literally) be a shaggy-dog story, Unleashed is full of wit, spirit and a wonderful sense of insight into what it means to be human. And feline. And canine.

Check out screenings of Unleashed at Roxie Theater August 25-31, with special screenings featuring Q&A with Finn Taylor on Saturday, August 26th at 7pm and Sunday, August 27th at 6:30pm. (More info HERE.) Those in attendance at the special screening on Saturday, August 26th at 7pm will receive an Amoeba Music bag of their own filled with fun shwag and great savings.

New Green Room Session with Klangstof at Amoeba Hollywood

Posted by Amoebite, August 24, 2017 12:17pm | Post a Comment

Klangstof Green Room Session at Amoeba Hollywood

We were excited to welcome Dutch indie band Klangstof for an intimate Green Room Session at Amoeba Hollywood recently. The band released their debut album, Close Eyes To Exit, in October 2016 and went on to open for The Flaming Lips at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in downtown LA and earn the distinction of being the first Dutch band to play in front of Coachella's massive crowds.

Klangstof Close Eyes To Exit Amoeba Music

During their session at Amoeba, the quartet executed their dynamic sound and showcased their talent for both atmospheric delicacy and heavy vamping. "Hostage" opens their set with a gentle, grooving intro propelled by a subtle electronic beat and synth. Soon, with a Chris Martin-esque ethereal "ooh," lead singer Koen van de Wardt signals a more definite groove with the band's full instrumentation. Up next, "Seasons," featuring some angular but slinky bass licks and funky interplay between the band members. The session closes with the tonal morphing "Amansworld." Fueled by a pensive energy, and a slightly disjointed rhythm, the song alternates between fragility and dissonance until finally building to a wailing climax of high-register guitar soling and sudden stops and starts.

Anthony Fantano What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

What does a YouTube-star and music critic buy when he visits Amoeba Hollywood? Just about everything! At least that was the case with Anthony Fantano, the host and creator of The Needle Drop, a vlog followed by over one million subscribers. From jazz to indie rock and from hip hip to new wave, Fantano found many a record to round out his collection, and he had plenty of insight to share about his choices.

Billing himself as "the internet's busiest music nerd," Anthony Fantano began his musical career while attending Southern Connecticut State University and working at his college radio station. He then began interning at Connecticut Public Radio, which lead to the creation of a podcast called The Needle Drop. In 2009, he began experimenting with video while reviewing a Jay Reatard album. Slowly, Fantano accumulated views and likes on his online channel, which eventually resulted in a partnership with YouTube. By the end of 2010, he had accrued 10,000 subscribers. By the end of 2011, he had 50,000.

Today, The Needle Drop counts over one million subscribers. At the time of writing, some of Fantano's most-viewed videos include his reviews of Kanye West's Life of PabloKendrick Lamar's DAMN., and To Pimp a Butterfly. His reviews sometimes feature fellow music critics, his wife, and his alter ego Cal Chuchesta. He has been profiled in The Guardian, spoken on a SXSW panel, and received the Beyond the Blog award at the MTV O Music Awards. LA fans can catch The Needle Drop's 10 Year Anniversary event with Anthony Fantano at the Echoplex on October 24th.

Akounak: Purple Rain in the Sahara at Oakland's Starline Social Club, September 9

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, August 21, 2017 05:42pm | Post a Comment

Akounak: Purple Rain, Mdou Moctar

The MATATU performance series presents Akounak: Purple Rain in the Sahara on Saturday, Akounak: Purple Rain, Mdou MoctarSeptember 9th at 7:30pm at Oakland's Starline Social Club. Nigerien musician Mdou Moctar and his band perform following a screening of his film Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai, also known as the Tuareg Purple Rain! A director's talk follows with filmmaker Chris Kirkley, plus the La Pelanga dance party!

In the somewhat crowded scene of Tuareg guitarists, Mdou Moctar stands apart from his peers. One of the few original singer/songwriters willing to experiment and push the boundaries of the genre, his unconventional styles have won him accolades both in Niger and abroad.

Mdou Moctar hails from Abalak, in the Azawagh desert of Niger. He taught himself the guitar at a young age on a homemade instrument. Inspired by returning Ishumar, Mdou traveled the road to Libya where he traveled and worked odd jobs. As chance had, he would meet some of the now famous guitarists and further his musical studies. He returned home with a guitar and a dream.

Rising to the status as local celebrity, in 2008 he traveled to Nigeria to record his first album Anar – a psychedelic electronic album of Tuareg guitar, which became an instant success throughout the mp3 networks of West Africa. “Tahoultine,” one of the standout tracks, was later featured on the compilation Music from Saharan Cellphones.

Madonna Top 15 Videos: Queen Of Pop Birthday Celebration Today 20% sale + DJs Nikki Finn & Material Boy @ Amoeba SF & LA

Posted by Billyjam, August 16, 2017 01:58pm | Post a Comment

Happy 59th birthday Madonna Louise Ciccone from Amoeba Music who today will be honoring the “Queen of Pop” with in-store sale of 20% off all Madonna materials (from CDs and vinyl to merch) plus DJs spinning all Madonna music at both the SF and LA stores. At the Haight Street, San Francisco store DJ Nikki Finn will be spinning an all-vinyl tribute set to Madonna at 5pm. Meanwhile at the Hollywood store, starting at 6pm, DJ Material Boy will be doing an all Madonna set. As well as offering 20% [in-store only] off all Madonna materials today both stores, promise raffles, treats and special surprises.

As a primer for DJs Material Boy and Nikki Finn’s all Madonna sets at Amoeba Hollywood and San Francisco respectively, I’ve compiled a subjective Madonna Top 15 Video list below. For Madonna, more so than most other artists, her videos have traditionally been as important as the songs themselves. That’s because Madonna has always been a multi-media pop star who cannot be separated from her visuals that showcase her all of her art: her choreography, fashions and social or political statements.  Plus like fellow reigning 80's pop stars Prince and Michael Jackson, she rose to fame during the golden era of MTV when videos were an exciting new medium for fans and artists as well as a proven promotional tool for record labels.

It's now seventeen and a half years since beloved Bay Area aerosol art legend Mike "DREAM" Francisco was senselessly murdered on an Oakland street: : the victim of a botched armed robbery.  He not only left behind an art legacy but also a ten month old son Akil that he never got to see grow up. Even more tragically, nine years later Akil would lose his other parent when breast cancer took his mother's life. In an ideal, cancer-free and crime-free world, all would be still here together enjoying life together. DREAM, known for his unbridled passion for life (especially art and hip-hop, should today have been celebrating his 48th birthday.

"KIng "DREAM, as many refer to him by, may be gone but will never be forgotten. This is thanks to the legendary TDK crew member's importance in the history of West Coast hip-hop and street art. Examples include his piece that graced the back cover of Saafir's 1994 landmark album Boxcar Sessions: on which he is also heard on the grooves of the album on a track shouting out fellow graf artists . But his legacy has also been kept alive by his old crew members, his many friends, and of course his family. These include DJ Willie Maze of the Local1200 and his most importantly his brother John Francisco.  These two were both instrumental in having the City of Oakland proclaim every February 17th "Dream Day."   That was the date his life tragically ended. But August 15th, his birthday, is also considered DREAM Day.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

Posted by Amoebite, August 14, 2017 03:45pm | Post a Comment

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

When you have all seven members of the Australian psych-rock band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard shopping Amoeba Hollywood, you can be sure that there will be some interesting finds. "I know all the cool-kid hipsters are into their African music at the moment, but...I assure you I was there before," Joey Walker dryly quips as he pulls out an LP by Ethiopian musician, Hailu Mergia, whose record Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument features the artist "mucking around with some Moogs and some synths." "Ethiopian kind of scales are something that I find really bizarre," continues Walker. "There's some kind of x-factor in it that is very, very good." From world to exotica to jazz to oldies, the guys in the band compiled a healthy collection of records, some of which were classics, while others were more off the beaten path.

Heavy psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard formed in Melbourne in 2010. Longtime friends, the band consists of Stu Mackenzie (vox/guitar/flute), Ambrose Kenny Smith (vox/synths/harmonica), Cook Craig (guitar), Joey Walker (guitar), Lucas Skinner (bass), Eric Moore (percussion), and Michael Cavanagh (percussion). The bandmates settled on their name as a compromise; one member wanted to call the group Gizzard Gizzard, whereas another was in favor of naming the band Lizard King, after Jim Morrison. The newly-christened King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard released their debut EP, Anglesea, in 2011.

Outside Lands 2017 Preview / Top 20 Acts: ATCQ, Dr Octagon, Metallica, Gorillaz, Lorde, Thundercat, The Who, Action Bronson + more

Posted by Billyjam, August 11, 2017 11:53am | Post a Comment
Props to the folks behind Outside Lands, the cool diverse long running independent music festival that takes place in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park every summer (which means weather might be sunny or foggy) and that this year marks its tenth successful year.

Outside Lands has become the largest independent music festival in the country. And for this year's 10th anniversary that begins today and ends Sunday (August 11 - 13), festival bookers have curated a refreshingly diverse bill that as well as all the big name acts includes up-and-coming bands, an Epic Rap Battle, breaks B-boy/DJ event,  DJs (inc. Josh Wink and Jazzy Jeff), stand-up and spoken word (inc. Nick Kroll and Henry Rollins) all the while covering many different popular musical genres.

Too many amazing acts to focus on them all in one  Amoeblog but take a look at the flyer left to see most of them listed. Note that, due to injury, that Queens of the Stone Age have cancelled their listed appearance this weekend. [EDIT UPDATE  Saturday announced that A Tribe Called Quest, who had already been postponed by one day, have been cancelled]  Also check out the Outside Lands website for more details and help in planning who to see and when. Generally speaking today is predominantly more beat driven acts while tomorrow/Saturday is more hard rock acts overall. Then Sunday offers more of a mish mash of genres.  Below I have put together a list of 20 of the acts (with videos and days/times of each act) that are worth catching. A subjective list from the perspective of a hip-hop fan foremost, it admittedly only scratches the surface and omits many great acts. But it gives an idea of the wealth of talent to expect this weekend at Outside Lands, as well as a rough guide to planning who to see on what stage over the 3 day festival weekend.

4 Classic Neil Young Reissues Coming Soon

Posted by Amoebite, August 9, 2017 11:48am | Post a Comment

Neil Young Vinyl Reissues

We've got good news for fans of the legendary Neil Young! Four new, old releases (or as we in the record biz like to call 'em, "reissues") are about to hit our shelves on August 18th. You can pre-order them from us now and they'll ship FREE to U.S. addresses.

Released between 1977-1979, these vinyl LPs mark one of the many career high points for the talented singer-songwriter; soon you'll be able to spin newly spiffed up copies of American Stars 'n Bars, Comes a Time, Rust Never Sleeps, and Live Rust on your record player. This all comes in advance of the release of Hitchhiker, a "lost" acoustic album originally recorded at Malibu's now-defunct Indigo Ranch Studios in 1976. Of course, new (old) music from Mr. Young is always a treat but there's a certain pleasure to revisiting old favorites.

Here's why we're looking forward to each new August reissue.

Tribute To Glen Campbell [1936 - 2017]

Posted by Billyjam, August 9, 2017 12:19am | Post a Comment

It was a deliberate choice for singer-songwriter/guitarist Glen Campbell, who Tuesday August 8th at age 81 as a result of Alzheimer’s, to have titled his recently released last album Adiós (“goodbye”). The album, released in June, is also avail on vinyl/LP. The country/crossover musician sadly was well aware that his time to say goodbye was approaching when he recorded the album in Nashville between 2012 and 2013. Those recording sessions, that followed on the heels of Campbell's farewell concert tour with the last show date in Napa CA, was made just as the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s (which he was originally diagnosed with in early 2011) were taking hold.

Including such contemplative, reflective songs as “Funny How Time Slips By (feat. Willie Nelson)” Adiós was the perfectly fitting farewell album for the Arkansas born musician, and sometime movie actor and onetime TV host. It was also just one of over sixty (studio and live) albums released by the prolific country/pop artist in a five-and-a-half decade career punctuated by such hit singles as “Wichita Lineman,” “Rhinestone Cowboy,”  “Gentle On My Mind,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” and “Southern Nights.”  In a tribute to the artist, music videos to these songs all appear below with links to the albums they're found on. Adiós and rest in peace Glen Campbell.

Prince Fans Finally Get To View Late Artist's Music Videos Online

Following years of it being almost impossible to locate virtually any of the late great Prince’s music videos online, such as “Purple Rain,” “Let’s Go Crazy” or “Controversy,” over the past month all these videos and 20 more have been posted to YouTube, VEVO, and other associated accounts by the official Prince website. Recap: Charity Auction for Planned Parenthood with Tawny Newsome

Posted by Amoebite, August 8, 2017 11:03am | Post a Comment

Amoeba Charity Auction for Planned Parenthood with Tawny Newsome

We sure had a great time at Amoeba Hollywood on Saturday! Our special guest auctioneer Tawny Newsome, musician and comedian and all around wonderful person, graced our stage and helped us raise close to $2,000 for our local Planned Parenthood chapter.

We had some outstanding prizes, and Tawny's relaxed style coaxed the audience into raising their auction paddles (which were actually Amoeba handheld fans, so they did double duty that hot day). Full of quips and one-liners, she had the audience chuckling--and she even got the shy people to join in!

Tawny Newsome is a Second City alum, actor (Bajillion Dollar Propertie$' "Chelsea Leight-Leigh") and a singer/guitarist. She was a touring member of Second City before joining the Mainstage cast and released a solo album in 2012. In 2013 Rolling Stone suggested Tawny for SNL's new cast. She moved from Chicago to LA about a year and a half ago where she's kept very busy. This October, Tawny is releasing her 4th album with Jon Langford (Mekons, Waco Brothers) which they recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio with original Muscle Shoals session players. They recorded the new album three days after last year's election with Tawny, John and their two band-mates flying to the town of 400. Four Lost Souls will be out on Bloodshot records September 22, with a tour starting that same month.

Warbringer Talks Death Metal, Black Metal & "What's In My Bag?"

Wabringer What's In My Bag? Metalology Amoeba Music

Burzum versus Death? Possessed versus Mayhem? Just what is the difference between black metal and death metal? Perhaps to metalheads the question is elementary, or even insulting, but to the metal novice an explanation is useful. Thankfully, our recent "What's In My Bag?" interview with Warbringer spawned an impromptu lesson. Having many a descriptive thing to say about their music and movie choices, the guys from the Newbury Park thrash metal band had no trouble enlightening us about the differences between the two sub-genres.

"Fundamentally it's this: the objective is different," starts lead singer John Kevill. "Death metal wants to basically crush shit," he says. "Black metal's this more cathartic, emotional thing."

We loved the band's "metalology" lecture so much that we turned it into its own video. In it they break down the technical, emotional, and geographical differences between the two sounds, and the different sub-genres that subsequently stem from them.

DJ UFO! + Vocalist Audio Angel Revive 90's San Francisco Jungle / Drum 'n' Bass Culture with "The Jungle" @ Public Works

Posted by Billyjam, August 3, 2017 12:58pm | Post a Comment

Do call it a comeback, a most welcome comeback from DJ UFO! who, tonight along with vocalist Audio Angel, will rewind things to two decades ago in San Francisco jungle / drum'n'bass music and club culture when they present the one-off club night: The Jungle at The Loft in Public Works in San Francisco tonight, Thursday August 3rd at 10pm (21+ Tickets $10 - $15). In ensuring that they truly take things back to the vibe of a place and time of long ago (the 1990's in SF jungle / drum 'n' bass club culture), not only will UFO! play an exclusively all vinyl drum'n'bass/jungle music set (a rarity these days, and for four consecutive hours) but he and longtime Bay Area based vocalist Audio Angel are making it a "CELL-PHONE FREE ENVIRONMENT by Yondr" by not allowing people to bring their smart phones as distractions. While some offered concern as to how they might order their UBER ride home, most people planning on going to The Jungle party tonight apparently have reacted most positively to the no-phone rule. They welcome a return to a simpler time before Instagram and all the other distractions on these handheld devices that have become an inseparable extension of most people these days.

The talented San Francisco born Ed "UFO!" Garro was among one of the Bay Area's earliest ambassadors of jungle and drum'n'bass music back in the early/mid 90's when many dismissed the UK imported ragga rooted, bass-heavy, frantic BPM fueled dance music as some weird mutant outgrowth of rave and techno rather than a soulful natural progression of reggae, hip-hop, and bass music. Originally a hip-hop DJ, with a history in the local SF battle scene, UFO! could see/hear all of these qualities of jungle music. He also saw the potential  for what future musical paths it could take. Hence he embraced the music and ran with it, going on to become an internationally revered DJ/producer.

Positive Attitude + Successful GoFundMe Drive Propel MC Zumbi's Rebound from Armed Robbery During Recent Zion I Video Shoot

Posted by Billyjam, August 2, 2017 10:02pm | Post a Comment

"Thanks to the love and support of so many great people, our GoFundMe drive has reached its goal to replace the camera and [to] re-shoot the video,"  MC Zumbi of Zion I told the Amoeblog. The longtime Oakland based hip-hop artist born Steve Gaines was referencing the successful ongoing crowd-funding drive he hurriedly set up a couple of weeks ago. His GoFundMe was set up after he and his film crew were robbed at gunpoint of valuable camera gear, during a music video shoot at 11th and Willow streets. That West Oakland neighborhood, where Zumbi himself had previously lived for many years, is an example of another rapidly changing East Bay community in the throes of gentrification.  Made to accompany the song "Calm Down," off the new Zion I EP The Wake Up, the short-movie styled music video's theme, Zumbi explained, was a commentary on the lack of opportunity for longtime residents of communities like the West Oakland one he'd chosen for his location shoot.

"I'm not mad at the community and I'm not scared of the community. I love Oakland," stressed the ever resilient and positive artist by phone this week. A year ago, when the artist and his family were priced out of their longtime Oakland home with no rent control, he recorded the reactionary song and music video "Tech $" about the negative effects of the Bay Area tech boom: one that's resulted in the displacement of so many longtime residents over the past number of years.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Justice and Busy P

Justic and Busy P What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

"You can't go wrong when you hang out with Beavis and Butt-Head," Busy P tells us sitting in the Amoeba Hollywood green room. The DJ, producer, and label head is talking about the lineup of bands featured on the soundtrack to the animated duo's 1996 cult movie, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, which includes White Zombie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, LL Cool J, and Rancid. Busy P and French electronic duo Justice visited us recently to share their finds in this "What's In My Bag?" episode. As you would imagine, the trio picked up some pretty interesting records, indeed.

Formed in 2003, French duo Justice rose to prominence off the strength of their 2007 debut LP, Cross, after attracting attention early on for their remix of the Simian track "Never Be Alone." The pair received two Grammy nominations related to Cross: one for Best Dance Recording (for the single "D.A.N.C.E.") Justice Womanand one for Best Electronic/Dance Album. Their sophomore LP, Audio, Video, Disco was a departure for the band, which they described as "daytime music." Their latest release is 2016's Woman, another upbeat disco/funk/house hybrid. LA fans can see Justice perform a special DJ set this Saturday, August 5th at the HARD Summer Music Festival.
