Deafheaven What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Who knew Johnny Marr's soothing voice could lull you to sleep on a tour bus? At least that's what happened when Deafheaven's Kerry McCoy tried to listen to the audiobook of the famed Smiths guitarist's autobiography, Set The Boy Free. After repeatedly nodding off to the recording, McCoy picked up the hardcover book during a visit to Amoeba Hollywood, where he and bandmate George Clarke grabbed a healthy stack of records and books showcasing their influences.

San Francisco metal band Deafheaven was founded by singer George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy in 2010. After releasing a demo, the band was signed to Deathwish Inc. Their debut, Roads to Judah, was released in 2011 and Deafheaven embarked on a packed touring schedule, with stops at Deafheaven New BermudaSXSW, Sound and Fury Festival, and support gigs for Russian Circles and KEN mode. They set off for Europe in 2012. Their breakthrough LP, Sunbather, arrived in 2013 and charted at #130 on the Billboard Top 200.

The current lineup solidified with the addition of drummer Daniel Tracy, guitarist Shiv Mehra, and bassist Stephen Lee Clark. In 2015, the band released the well-review New Bermuda LP. They continued to tour regularly with dates in Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America. This summer, the band will be performing at select dates in Europe and Mexico.

Clarke picked up the latest Austra record, Future Politics, admiring the cover's photos and typeface by designer Nick Steinhardt, as well as the latest release by his friends in the industrial band Youth Code. McCoy demonstrated his love for Britpop with an Oasis vinyl reissue and Morrissey's Vauxhall and I, which he describes as Morrissey's "Britpop record." Of course the guys also shopped for some metal, including Crowbar's Sonic Excess In Its Purest Form, Grave Miasma's Endless Pilgrimage, and Mayhem's Live in Leipzig.

But which new wave / goth album is George Clarke excited about and which autobiography does McCoy consider to be one of the best? You'll have to watch the video below to find out:
