Top Five Hip-Hop Releases 04:21:17
1: J Dilla Motor City (avail in vinyl/LP) (Ma Dukes Official)

2: Camp Lo On The Way Uptown: The Uptown Saturday Night Demo (Persia Records)

3: Cas One & Figure  So Our Egos Don't Kill Us (Strange Famous)

4: Sixo The Odds Of Free Will (Fake Four Inc.)

5: Sean Price Monkey Barz LP + Jesus Price Superstar LP  (Duck Down)

The new releases chart this week includes a lot of older music: some reissued and some recently dug up and released after the fact. The all new releases include Sixo's The Odds Of Free Will on Fake Four Inc. and the new one from Jacob Snider. Snider is rapper Cas One signed to Sage Francis' Strange Famous label who, along with DJ/producer Figure, this week drops the album So Our Egos Don't Kill Us. Among the older music as new releases this week is the Camp Lo collection of rare and unreleased demos, via Persia Records, that previously had been floating around in digital and tape versions.  Aptly entitled On The Way Uptown: The Uptown Saturday Night Demo it is a nod to their 20 year old hip-hop classic Uptown Saturday Night. Included in this new 17 track release of older music is an earlier version of "Sparkle" as well as a rawer sounding demo version of “Krystal Karrington.” There's also  the "Sedgwick Ave. Demo" version of "This Is It (Luchini)" as well as such other tracks as "Superfly" and "Coolie High Is Life."

A straight up reissue on the chart are the two titles in a tie for the number 5 slot on this week's new releases chart are the two Sean Price albums Monkey Barz LP and Jesus Price Superstar LP which, care of Duck Down, are the vinyl reissues of the late beloved Brooklyn rapper's 2005 and 2007 albums respectively. And finally the latest posthumous release from the great Detroit (Motor City) producer/emcee J Dilla, who died back in February 2006, is Motor City (also released on vinyl/LP) from his mother's label Ma Dukes Official. This newest posthumous release compiled by Dilla's ma is nicely described by the Amoeba reviewers as, "a handwritten letter to her son in the form of rare recordings sequenced together, with a flow that emulates the effortless continuity of his most legendary release, Donuts. “Motor City J Rocc Blend #1,” a bonus mix accompanying the record, encapsulates the album's meld of influence with ingenuity; taking the opening bars of Notorious BIG's “Juicy” and flipping it over some of Dilla's signatures sounds, including a 00s appropriate neo-soul beat and omnipresent air raid sirens. Not just for the completists out there."

As previewed here on the Amoeblog the 2017 Bay Area DMC Regional DJ Battle took place last night at the Uptown in Oakland and the winner of the heated battle was Ichy the Killer with DJ LazyBoy coming in second and Mike Cee taking third place. Ichy, who will go onto the US Finals, is pictured center above along with LazyBoy (left) and Mike Cee (right) in a photo from last night care of DMC USA chief Christie Zee.  BAS-One, who was the host of last night's battle, reported to the Amoeblog this morning that it was a fun well attended event noting that, "DJ Daryl of 415 and No Limit and producer of 2Pac's "Keep Your Head Up" was in the house. And it was a nice size crowd too, for the most part highly positive."

The DMC Regional battles continue tomorrow, Sunday April 23rd, with the Southern California 2017 DMC Los Angeles and the DMC US Scratch Finals taking place at Club Bleu. from 2pm to 10pm with a performance from DJ Revolution and battle host Toquon.

Speaking of talented hip-hop DJs, among the greatest of all time has to be DJ Premier. And J. Period pays tribute to the DJ/producer great with his latest mini megamix Respect The DJ installment embedded below from SoundCloud where he tagged it with the image of Preemo that carries the wonderful reminder to treasure great artists while they are alive and not wait until they have passed on. No doubt when writing that sentiment he had such artists as the late great musical partner of Premier's in Gang Starr, Guru, in mind.

Underway today is the tenth Record Store Day (RSD) with record stores like Amoeba Music participating in
this annual tribute to physically released music and the retail stores that carry it. Among the many exclusives for this year's RSD, all of which can be found on this list, include that cool Slick Rick Children's Story book and CD package and the others from the Get On Down record label as profiled on the Amoeblog here.

The non hip-hop RSD releases today include the Prince vinyl issues written about here, the hot picks in vinyl such as The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" 7" single and The Cure's Greatest Hits Acoustic LP picture disc that were among those profiled here, and the 10 limited edition soundtracks,
