As in years past today, 4/20 or April 20th, is a day of celebration and homage to the cannabis plant with countless happenings, from small to large and formal to informal, taking place all over the Bay Area all day but especially at 4:20pm this afternoon. These include the big annual group smoke out at "Hippie Hill" in
San Francisco's Golden Gate Park which is at Sharon Meadow located in the Park at Kezar Dr. and John F Kennedy Drive (not far from Amoeba SF at the end of Haight St. where upstairs you can apply for or renew your medical marijuana card.) Known as the 420 Hippie HIll Festival the annual event is now officially recognized  by the City of San Francisco who have granted a permit to the all day happening that expects to see tens of thousands of visitors/tokers joining the celebration of the ganja and the right to legally use it.

The "unified sound system for background music" means that various sound selectors will be providing weed themed tunes while the now fully legit and under permit from the City event means that there will be some changes from previous years. For example the entire area of Hippie Hill will be fenced off with added security (inside and outside the Park) plus extra medical emergency services provided with EMT and ambulances on-site. Additionally there will a welcome increase in the number port-o-potties provided. Free. Ages 18+ More info

Then afterwards late this afternoon with an early kick off of 530pm, as per tradition of the annual hemp holiday, will be the hip-hop themed Hippie Hill afterparty / concert at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium at 99 Grove St., SF. This year's performers will include hometown dank ambassador/ entrepreneur / rapper Berner along with such other acts as YG, Lil B, Young Dolph whose latest album Bullet Proof just arrived in Amoeba this past week, Jesse Royal, Kool John, and Rich The Kid. Note that Kevin Gates, who was originally on the lineup, is no longer included. 5:30pm - 11pm. All ages. $59.50 More info.

Other Bay Area events piggy-backing on the 420 theme today include 4/20 Stoner Karaoke, 4/20 Comedy, and Light Up Feminism. The Light Up Feminism launch event takes place at Virgil’s Sea Room at 3152 Mission St. in SF (530pm-730pm) at which organizers plan on, "Chillin' out for happy hour gettn' lit AF over the current state of affiairs, our hopes, stokes and anti-mysoginist dreams." Free. All ages + "Any kind of ladies (+guys)" welcome. More info.
