Posse Cuts From 1988 - 1994: When All In The Same Gang & United In Song, Rappers Crafted Some of Hip-Hop History's Greatest Music

Posted by Billyjam, April 30, 2017 01:25pm | Post a Comment

Hip-hop music, an urban form once dismissed as a musical novelty or passing fad, has consistently proven its critics wrong by steadily growing into the most influential, dominant global form of popular music and culture. But despite those advances, the once close-knit musical genre lacks the uniform vision it once commanded.  I refer to that sense of unity among all hip-hop artists displayed back in the "golden era" of the late 80's to early 90's. For proof you need look no further than the bevy of posse cuts recorded back then, and outlined below. Yes in the passing decades since that era, the Bronx founded reactionary form of music and culture would exponentially expand into an unstoppable, sprawling cultural force on a global level. But while today's hip-hop may be the pop music de jour for most,  as well as having mutated into a zillion sub-genres and breakaway categories, hip-hop as a genre is way more disjointed and separated than ever before. Hence I take a return to that posse cut era when hip-hop artists of all backgrounds would unite in song/video and often craft some of hip-hop history's best music.

"Posse" cut was the phenomenon where large collectives of rappers linked by crew, region, or, most often, by a common cause (EG anti-violence), all would get together to record a massive joint effort. Posse cuts were most popular circa '88 to '94 coinciding with the years of hip-hop's much lauded golden era.  Multiple emcee, pass-the-mic styled hip-hop songs, posse cuts date back to hip-hop's formative years with many of them freestyle sessions dating back the 1970's up to the start of the 1980's in Bronx during the early years of hip-hop.  Of these many were not even recorded but luckily some were such as Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force's "Zulu Nation Throwdown." But It wasn't until the later 1980's when the posse cut came into its own. Below are the videos of seven of some of the best posse cuts from that six-year span beginning in '88. Each are timeless, classic hip-hop recordings. And with so many contributing artists, they are a comprehensive history lesson in hip-hop of that era.

Hip-Hop Rap Up 04:28:17: Vinyl Edition: Gorillaz, D.R.A.M, J. Cole, Record Store Day, WFMU Record Fair, Vinyl Collecting Videos

Posted by Billyjam, April 28, 2017 12:20pm | Post a Comment

This weekly rap report is an all vinyl edition in honor of both this weekend's big WFMU Record Fair in Brooklyn and last weekend's widely successful Record Store Day. Now in its tenth glorious year, Record Store Day has grown into an anticipated annual event for record collectors and general music fans the world over. It's also a welcome reminder the importance of visiting a physical, so-called brick-and-mortar music store like Amoeba Music versus simply shopping online. Early Sunday, the day after Record Store Day, there were some titles leftover that were offered online at the Amoeba web store but since all of those have been snapped up. Scroll down to the vinyl themed videos below to see the Amoeba San Francisco Record Store Day Report or see the full Amoeba SF Record Store Day Amoeblog and the report on Record Store Day 2017 at Amoeba Hollywood.

Similarly important to record collectors is the annual WFMU Record Fair, happening today, tomorrow, and Sunday at the Brooklyn Expo in Greenpoint, NYC that attracts collectors from faraway places including San Francisco and Tokyo (including Amoeba fan Nakajima pictured right from Japan) who travel to New York just to attend this large scale annual record fair. In addition to endless booths selling records, CDs, DVDs, posters etc. there are also numerous live performances (many also broadcast live on WFMU) and film screenings in The Movie Lounge. The latter include screenings of the recent era documentaries on both Danny Fields and the late great Sharon Jones (filmed in part at Amoeba). Meanwhile the live performances will include on Saturday  Bloodshot Bill (2pm), The Atlantic Thrills (3:30pm), Baby Shakes (4:30pm), and Ronnie Fujiyama (5:30pm). Sunday's live sets include Matmos with Chuck Bettis (3pm) and Laurice (4pm). The 2017 WFMU Record Fair takes place at the Brooklyn Expo Center, 79 Franklin St, in the Greenpoint district of Brooklyn Friday 7-10pm, Saturday & Sunday 10am to 7pm. Nejla Ates: the Exquisite Turkish Delight

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, April 27, 2017 08:48pm | Post a Comment

Nejla Ates

By Kai Wada Roath
Ambassador of Confusion Hill and host of the Super Shangri-La Show

Nejla Ates"She had a ruby on her tummy and a diamond big as Texas on her toe
She let her hair down and she did the hoochie-coochie real slow
When she did her special number on the zebra skin
I thought she'd stop the show…"
~ "Little Egypt" by The Coasters

If you have flipped through Middle East or Belly Dancing records, you most likely have seen her…for she is hard to miss. As Sandra Warner was the enchantress for Martin Denny’s album covers, Nejla Ates, “the Turkish Delight,” was the “Honk-honk, hubba-hubba, Ee chee wa waa!” album cover model of Middle Eastern records in the 1950s.

A fellow Pisces, born March 7, 1932, Nejla lived a life of wild seduction, exotic belly dancing, and love drama. (If you are a Pisces too, join the Bay Area Pisces Power group on Facebook!) Dancing at night clubs around the world in the 1950s, Nejla was said to have "left a trail of broken hearts from Istanbul to the Bronx, with stops in Paris, Miami, and Las Vegas.”

Princes, oil tycoons, famous singers, and actors would fall madly in love with her, knowing full well that her side-hobby was stealing taken men, even from Zsa Zsa Gabor.

The Afghan Whigs Publish Video For "Oriole" From "In Spades" (Sub Pop) Out May 5th

Posted by Billyjam, April 26, 2017 12:26pm | Post a Comment

Today The Afghan Whigs published the music video for "Oriole" which offers another preview of the anticipated forthcoming new May 5th full-length release, In Spades, from the Cincinnati, Ohio band that first formed (and since broke up and reformed) three decades ago. To be released by Sub Pop in CD and 180 gram vinyl/LP formats, In Spades will be the first new album since 2014's return album Do to the Beast  (also avail in vinyl/LP). That album was their first since 1998's 1965 which was the last recording before they broke up in 2001. The band reformed twice since then, most recently right before Do to the Beast with mainman/singer/rhythm guitarist Greg Dulli and bassist John Curley (also known for the band Wussy) reuniting the band.

Interest in the Whigs has never waned and in the past couple of years the group's classic older albums have been reissued in expanded edition formats: 1993's Gentlemen  (also avail in LP/vinyl) and 1996's Black Love (also on LP/vinyl). In the years that The Afghan Whigs had been inactive mainman Greg Dulli has worked in such projects as The Twilight Singers and The Gutter Twins.  Dulli wrote and produced all of the new album In Spades that was recorded over a period of time in studios in New Orleans, Los Angeles, Memphis and Joshua Tree.

Happy Mother's Day: Serial Mom on Blu-ray!

Serial Mom

By Brent James

Just in time for Mother’s Day, John Waters’ 1994 wistful tale of a suburban supermom turned mass Serial Mom Blu-raymurderer, Serial Mom, is hitting the shelves May 9th in all of its remastered Blu-ray glory! Don't want to wait until then? Pre-order it now on Amoeba.com (and it'll ship to U.S. addresses for free).

Although not the trashiest of Waters’ films, Serial Mom takes the dark comedy route and steers it in all the filthy right places. We see Beverly Sutphin (portrayed by the ever amazing Kathleen Turner) send her kids off to school, with packed lunches and all, and then promptly march upstairs to conduct a series of obscene phone calls to her next-door neighbor -- all because she was cut off in the parking lot of Joann Fabrics.

It’s this immediate brilliance that sucks us into Beverly’s world. You see, she doesn’t pick her victims at random but rather targets the people that have caused her or her family grief. Selectively killing for not rewinding video tapes (it WAS ‘94 after all), or wearing white after Labor Day. In her eyes, she’s a superhero. It’s the ultimate love of a mother, only one that has crossed the lines that most of us never even step to. We think about it, but we don’t do it. Beverly Sutphin does it.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Okkervil River

Okkervil River What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

"There's something so beautiful and defenseless about a man singing in a really high voice with other men singing in really high voices," says Will Sheff, lead singer and songwriter of Okkervil River. "There's something so masculine/feminine about that sound." Sheff is talking about the album Don't Turn Around by the '70s R&B group Black Ivory, whose title track features some sweet falsetto harmonizing. Don't Turn Around was one of the many records Sheff bought when he visited Amoeba Hollywood, where he found a very eclectic mix of goodies and shared some his musical influences, both present and past.

Okkervil River AwayNamed after a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya, American indie rock band Okkervil River formed in Austin, TX, in 1998. The band started attracting attention off the strength of their self-released debut album Stars Too Small to Use, which led to a series of successful SXSW appearances, greater notice from music media, and eventually, a deal with Jagjaguwar. Their first album for the label, Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See, landed in 2002. Further critical acclaim came with the release of their third LP, 2005's Black Sheep Boy.

Record Store Day 2017 at Amoeba Hollywood

After a very busy morning celebrating the tenth annual Record Store Day here at Amoeba Hollywood, the festivities were still going strong into the afternoon hours. We moved our remaining RSD exclusives (and the accompanying line) indoors, and the line snaked through the aisles. Inside the store, we had DJ sets from Harriet Brown (1pm), Gabby Moreno (3pm), and Cut Chemist (5pm). At 2pm, the legendary Seymour Stein of Sire Records and Warner Brothers fame joined us for a signing of the new Just Say 50 box set released for Record Store Day. We also had four very cool, limited edition RSD17 designs and our friends at Family Industries were here once again doing live silk screening on t-shirts and tote bags. And, of course, we gave of hundreds of free gift bags with purchase. Plus, today we released a new, limited edition Amoeba shirt!

Outside, the party continued! We were joined by LA Weekly, who gave out loads of cool schwag, and The Impossible Project, who set up an ultra cool Polaroid photo booth. Customers tried their luck with our prize wheel for $1 a spin; all proceeds benefit the Downtown Women's Center. Rene from Draw the Line Entertainment whipped up caricatures for kids and Weruva offered RSD-themed airbrush tattoos. (They also gave out samples of pet food.) Delicious Pizza was slinging slices for sale, and you could sample tasty (free) treats from Hubert's Lemonade and Body Factory. The Warner Bros. Truck was parked outside, offering complimentary ice cream and music treats.. At 5pm, we gave away some really nice speakers and headphones from Pioneer DJ

Record Store Day 4/22/2017 marks the tenth year for this unique holiday celebrating records, record stores, and the people who love them. The day has only become more sacred to those initiated into the Church of Vinyl, as we saw today at Amoeba SF. Folks started lining up as early as 4:20am (wink wink, but that's what we were told by the first in line!) to get first crack at exclusive releases from Prince, The Cure, Madonna, The Beatles, and so many more!

As has become tradition, the line to get into Amoeba SF spanned the McDonalds' parking lot and around the block. When these die hard music fans poured into the store at 10am to get those limited edition releases, they also partook of our all-day sales, live t-shirt silk screening with print-meisters Free Gold Watch, and DJ sets with Purple Pam (a.k.a. Pam the Funkstress of The Coup), Jay Midnight, B-Side Brujas, and more.

Experience the day all over again with our action-packed videos and photos!

The good people at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf kept everyone in line this morning caffeinated, refreshed, and nourished, thanks to their awesome array of complimentary beverages and treats. Store employees kept busy pulling titles for customers who had waited in line and filled out menus in hopes of scoring some of the day's most popular titles. Some of the first releases to get snapped up included those by Keane, The Sundays, Jack White, Pink Floyd, and yesterday's birthday boy, Mr. Iggy Pop.

The festivities continue this afternoon with free gift bags, live silk screening, special guest DJ sets and signings. Outside the store you can give the prize wheel a spin, get a caricature or an RSD themed airbrush tattoo, and enjoy a veritable cornucopia of gastronomic delights and cool tunes. First Anniversary of Prince's Death Coincides With Release Of Several Prince Vinyl Exclusives For Record Store Day

Posted by Billyjam, April 21, 2017 01:46pm | Post a Comment

Exactly one year ago on this date, April 21st, beloved prolific artist and pioneer of "the Minneapolis sound" Prince Rodgers Nelson died at age 57.  Just as they did on that sad day last year, all over the world today fans of the musical legend have been honoring the occasion and the man's legacy generally by playing his music sharing memories of the influential funk/pop multi-instrumentalist. Even late last night fans were already honoring the anniversary as they gathered at Paisley Park, the late artist's home and studio in Minneapolis, as part of Celebration 2017 which is four days of concerts honoring the musician. And today radio stations all over have been playing music from Prince's deep back catalog including by the many other artists that he wrote and produced for.

That Prince catalog will expand some tomorrow, Record Store Day 2017, when a slew of exclusive, limited edition vinyl Prince special issues will be unleashed in record stores including Amoeba where only one copy per customer is allowed.  The 2017 Record Store Day Prince vinyl will include a 7" 45 RPM double A-sided single, picture disc of "Little Red Corvette" / "1999" (pictured above). Another of the several Prince Record Store Day exclusives sure to have fans fiending for tomorrow is a 12" single vinyl pressing of "Pop Life" via Warner Brothers, the label that Prince released perhaps his most popular work on and who issued a bunch of LP vinyl reissues back in February as reported on the Amoeblog.

GOODBYE, ALLAN HOLDSWORTH. Remembering A Guitarist Like No Other.

Posted by Rick Frystak, April 20, 2017 05:48pm | Post a Comment

by Rick Frystak

On April 15, 2017, I was very saddened to be told that guitarist / violinist / composer Allan Holdsworth had passed away, leaving behind a legacy of recordings and for me, countless live performances I witnessed that will live forever in my soul. Along with being shocked, I just did not believe my brother's text that this news had happened. Fake? It was then that I was pointed to Facebook, where Allan's daughter had quietly and thoughtfully revealed her father's death.

The timing of his passing was, and is absolutely spooky. 2 weeks previously we had  seen Allan perform a celebratory gig to mark the release of a project in which I had participated in the production, and my brother Peter had provided photographs for: a huge, 12-CD box set of almost all of his albums,The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever. and a 2-CD set, Eidolon, of his ''best'' songs selected by Allan himself. I was grievously perplexed. I have to remind myself now that Allan had to be happy to see that the CD projects were on the store shelves. Dan Perloff, producer of the CDs for Manifesto Records, has said that the box set is already sold out.

I first heard Allan while he was a member of the group Tempest., and their album Tempest. We knew immediately that this man was no ordinary guitarist.

Signed Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross & Gustavo Santaolalla LP Coming to Amoeba Hollywood This Earth Day

Posted by Amoebite, April 20, 2017 12:19pm | Post a Comment

Before the Flood signed soundtrack LP

UPDATE: Due to overwhelming demand, we will now be auctioning off this item to the highest bidder at Amoeba Hollywood Saturday, 4/22 at 4pm.

In addition to Saturday, April 22nd being Record Store Day, it's also Earth Day! At Amoeba Hollywood, we're making the most out of the day with a very special fundraising event benefiting TerraPass, a San Francisco-based organization founded to offset carbon emissions and foster climate change awareness. They do a lot of really cool stuff -- wind power initiatives,  turning garbage into electricity through landfill gas captures, and producing energy from farm animal waste -- in local communities across the country. So, we're pretty excited to have acquired a vinyl version of the soundtrack to the 2016 documentary Before The Flood signed by Academy Award-winning composers Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross & Gustavo Santaolalla; we will auction off our one copy this Saturday at 4pm from the stage with all proceeds going directly to TerraPass.

Released in 2016, Before the Flood was produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Fisher Stevens, and friends to shine a light on the devastating impacts of climate change. Over the course of three years, the team traveled to locales around the world where residents are dealing with global warming and all its ills. In the documentary, DiCaprio et al. also take a look at some of the organizations working today to fight climate change, such as TerraPass.

Bay Area 420 Guide: From Hippie Hill Fest & Stoner Karaoke to Hip-Hop Homages To Hemp

Posted by Billyjam, April 20, 2017 11:30am | Post a Comment

As in years past today, 4/20 or April 20th, is a day of celebration and homage to the cannabis plant with countless happenings, from small to large and formal to informal, taking place all over the Bay Area all day but especially at 4:20pm this afternoon. These include the big annual group smoke out at "Hippie Hill" in
San Francisco's Golden Gate Park which is at Sharon Meadow located in the Park at Kezar Dr. and John F Kennedy Drive (not far from Amoeba SF at the end of Haight St. where upstairs you can apply for or renew your medical marijuana card.) Known as the 420 Hippie HIll Festival the annual event is now officially recognized  by the City of San Francisco who have granted a permit to the all day happening that expects to see tens of thousands of visitors/tokers joining the celebration of the ganja and the right to legally use it.

The "unified sound system for background music" means that various sound selectors will be providing weed themed tunes while the now fully legit and under permit from the City event means that there will be some changes from previous years. For example the entire area of Hippie Hill will be fenced off with added security (inside and outside the Park) plus extra medical emergency services provided with EMT and ambulances on-site. Additionally there will a welcome increase in the number port-o-potties provided. Free. Ages 18+ More info

House Of Pain Meets Cypress Hill As Everlast Returns to His Hip-Hop Roots In New B-Real Collaboration

Posted by Billyjam, April 19, 2017 12:45pm | Post a Comment
Cypress Hill, House Of Pain and Psycho Realm joined forces in the dope new track and video (below) "Warporn Industry," that's part of the Warporn Industries project, which finds Everlast returning to his hip-hop roots in the B-Real collaboration. The song is an intro to the similarly titled new rap supergroup and its spinoff art collective WARPORN Industries. That's the superrap trio made up of Sick Jacken from Psycho Realm of whom B-Real is also a member, Divine Styler who first worked with Everlast three decades ago as part of Ice-T's Rhyme Syndicate collective, and of course Everlast who as Whitey Ford had gone acoustic for most of his post House Of Pain years. His 1998 Tommy Boy album Whitey Ford Sings The Blues   was reissued by Rhino last month.

Everalast's old friend B-Real, who makes a cameo on this one track, said of the full length project that it's “one of the best hip-hop albums I’ve heard in a long time: Sick beats and bars with substance by Sick Jacken, Divine Styler and Everlast.” The "album" B-Real refers to is in fact the 2017 WARTORN Industries mixtape that also features guest spots from Big Daddy Kane, Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks), and Rakaa Iriscience (Dilated Peoples). So far the eleven track mixtape album is only a download but likely will be released physically in the future with B-Real, whom Everlast calls "my brother from another," guesting on only one track. Of the  House of Pain/CypresHill/Psycho Realm family connect, track producer Divine Styler said: "This is not a throwback, we're holding the eternal hip-hop flame period. Everlast proved it when he said one of the illest lyrics ever spit in,'Omnipotent variant ex-communicated" and the "fold time and space, all over the place.' He killed it."  Shot recently in Los Angeles, with director Chad A. Marshall favoring the many back alleys of LA as the appropriate backdrop to the music, the video for "Warporn Industry"  appears below.

Ten More Recommended Picks for Record Store Day 2017 (for folks who don't know what to get)!

Ever felt lost at Amoeba or so overwhelmed by the selections that you forget what you're looking for? Or, worse yet, you don't even know what to get?
record store day 2017 staff picks what should I get recommendations
Generally speaking, it can be tough to stay focused at Amoeba, and on Record Store Day, what with the increased scope of releases both in terms of limited RSD offerings and other freshly stocked new arrivals, not to mention the scope of the crowd, the struggle can be all too real. Each year come Record Store Day we do our very best to provide everyone with personal copies of our comprehensive RSD product list as well as directions to where these items are stocked in the store, and we always try to accommodate all individual queries, quandaries, and quests with safety and fairness. Sometimes this is as simple as recommending something to someone who doesn't know what they want, but knows they definitely want something because it's what? Record Store Day! With that in mind, I've created a list of RSD product picks especially for those folks who don't know what they want, but surely want something.

For more Record Store Day recommendations, please see the links at the bottom of this post. Happy hunting everyone thank you for continued support!

New 'What's In My Bag?' Episode with Bobby Liebling of Pentagram

Pentagram - Bobby Liebling What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

"Right here is the boss, this is the boss," says Pentagram's Bobby Liebling, holding up a copy of Iggy and The Stooges' seminal proto-punk record Raw Power on his recent visit to Amoeba San Francisco. "I had a lot of personal time spent with him, tour bus, women, uh, the whole nine yards," Liebling says, going on to recount the first time he met Iggy at the age of 14, cleaning peanut butter off him after a Stooges show. "This is my favorite album in history, and it's probably the worst mix ever put down," he says laughing. "These people were my whole world, it was like 'someday, I'm gonna do this' and I never gave up."

Pentagram First Daze HereAmerican heavy metal band Pentagram are known as one of the pioneers of the doom metal subgenre. Founded in 1971 by the band's vocalist and sole constant member, Bobby Liebling, Pentagram went through a series of lineup changes and released a handful of 7"s before their self-titled studio debut came out in 1985. (The album was later re-titled Relentless.) Their sophomore LP, Day of Reckoning, further cemented their status as progenitors of the nascent doom genre upon its release in 1987.

Interview With POND's Nicholas Allbrook

POND

After almost two years of silence, Australian rock band POND has spawned their new album, The Pond, The WeatherWeather, releasing on May 5th, 2017. The whimsical and multicolored group has yet again brought their honest expertise to the table. Yet, the band twists expectations by fusing pop and semi-political messages into their mind-bending songwriting. Produced by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, POND’s glam and glitzy rock tendencies are now fully embraced in The Weather, with touches of a younger POND’s jammy and experimental artistry.

Their first single, “Sweep Me Off My Feet,” was released in early October, giving audiences a taste of their bubble gum dance abilities. The song sheds awareness, challenging masculinity and the ideologies modern society holds as true beauty. Much earlier than planned, their second single, “30,000 Megatons,” was brought to us shortly after the world learned that the United States would soon be led by reality T.V. star and actual super villain of humanity, Donald Trump. Lastly, the album’s title track, “The Weather,” was released this spring.

Frontman and songwriter Nicholas Allbrook gave DoTheBay and Amoeba Music an early listen to their long-awaited album along with a quick phone call to discuss his master plan behind the scenes of the band’s music. If you find yourself weak at the knees after getting this sneak peek of The Weather, head over to the Great American Music Hall on Tuesday April 25th, 2017 to catch POND perform their newest work right before your eyes. Enter to win a pair of tickets to this show with DoTheBay HERE!

Damn! Kendrick Lamar has done it again with his amazing new album DAMN. (Aftermath) that arrived into Amoeba this past Friday (April 14th) two days before the acclaimed Compton rapper's Coachella performance yesterday that included songs from the new album that features the previously released single "HUMBLE." (see the Dave Meyers & the little homies directed music video below). With refreshingly unpretentious cover art, that looks like it was slapped together in a couple minutes, and clocking in at 55 minutes,  DAMN. is the artist's fourth album and the anticipated follow up to 2015's critically and commercially acclaimed To Pimp A Butterfly (also avail on LP/vinyl).

Guitarist J.Geils Dies At Age 71

Posted by Billyjam, April 12, 2017 12:29am | Post a Comment

Rock guitarist J.Geils was found dead in his Groton, Massachusetts home late Tuesday afternoon (April 11) as reported by Boston's WCVB TV. He was 71.  Upon learning the news of Geils' passing, the lead singer of the J.Giles Band, Peter Wolf took to social media. On Tuesday evening Wolf posted  "Thinking of all the times we kicked it high and rocked down the house! R.I.P. Jay Geils" along with a photo of the band that first formed 50 years ago. .

Back in the late sixties John Warren Geils Jr. was a mechanical engineering student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and was more interested in music than engineering. That band that he co-founded and that bore his name was comprised of Danny Klein, Magic Dick Salwitz, Stephen Jo Bladd, Seth Justman, Giles and lead singer Peter Wolf. In 1970 they would release their self titled debut on Atlantic Records.

For many the J.Geils Band will always be best remembered by their latter era biggest hits: 1981's "Freeze Frame" and "Centerfold" which charted at No. 1 for six weeks in early 1982. The accompanying music videos for those  hit singles became staples of the then new novelty, and influential Music Television Network: MTV back when they really were music television. However those songs are not really representative of the band's earlier, less mainstream and way more blues rooted rock sound with more harmonica and piano included in the mix. An example is the hard rockin bluesy Geils/Wolf penned "Hard Driven Man" found on 1972's  Live Full House album, or  "Floyd's Hotel" by Juke Joint Jimmy (a pseudonym used by the band). For more of that blues-rock style check the two full J.Geils concert set on video below: the 1972 show in their hometown and the 1977 concert in San Francisco at Winterland.

10 Limited Edition Soundtracks Out on Record Store Day 2017

10 Limited Edition Record Store Day Soundtracks

Record Store Day is so close, you can almost taste all the limited edition special releases! On Saturday, April 22, 2017, indie music stores everywhere will join forces and unleash this year’s rare and drool-worthy RSD releases. (Download a PDF of those exclusive releases HERE.) It’s our Xmas and we are going to town, no Santa needed!

The vinyl soundtrack selection is especially plentiful and exciting this year, full of scores and collections that are being released for the first time ever, first time on vinyl, or are re-releases of out-of-print albums. Film fans will flip for the fabulous colored vinyl, deluxe additions and packaging, and - in a couple of cases - beautiful picture discs.

Here's my 10 favorite from those being offered:

Ciao! Manhattan soundtrackCiao! Manhattan

Part of Andy Warhol's Factory in the mid-'60s, Edie Sedgwick was “It Girl” of the Pop Art age. 1973's Ciao! Manhattan was the model and actor's final film. Written and directed by John Palmer and David Weisman, the movie tells a somewhat fictionalized account of Sedgewick's life. She portrays Susan Superstar, a New Yorker who ends up living in a drained swimming pool in Santa Barbara, always in a narcotic daze. The film was shot over a five-year period, at the end of which Sedgwick died of a barbiturate overdose at the age of 28.

From "Give Peace A Chance" to "Fuck Donald Trump" - Top Ten Protest Songs

Posted by Billyjam, April 11, 2017 02:10pm | Post a Comment

"War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing! Say it again" - Edwin Starr "War" (1970 Motown) *
The above sentiment of Edwin Starr's popular anti-Vietnam protest song was right about war but with one key exception. War, along with other periods of serious social unrest, historically trigger some of the best reactionary art of all schools including music and some of the most powerful protest songs. Even before last Thursday's bombing of Syria and the inevitable future fallout it will cause, the Trump era had already helped kick start the latest renaissance of revolutionary protest music.  Like Edwin Starr's Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong penned 1970 single, recorded during the counterculture era, the latest wave of protest music is a form of artistic expression born out of passion and necessity. Traditionally protest music acts on two primary levels. It's the soundtrack to the actual protest / rebellion / revolution, as well as being as a medium to vent and share feelings of discontent. As well as being a catharsis for its creators offering listeners some sense of relief or bonding, good protest music can also provide a message of hope during historically challenging times. Since the beginning of time history has a habit of repeatedly presenting its citizens challenging times, with war and social injustices being recurring themes.

White Lung What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Mish Way and Anne-Marie Vassiliou of Canadian punk band White Lung were recently at Amoeba Hollywood showing us some of the killer records they picked up, including a Van Morrison LP box set of his 1967 New York sessions. "Van Morrison's my favorite musician of all time," says Way. "This is not my fault, it's my dad's fault," she continues, stating that she was forced to listen to Morrison throughout her childhood. "But I truly do love Van." In addition to the Morrison collection, Way also picked up Bo Diddley's Big Bad Bo album, which features a cover of Van Morrison's "I've Been Working." "Bo Diddley singing a Van Morrison song would make me very happy."

White Lung Paradise White Lung consists of Mish Way-Barber, Kenneth Williams, and Anne-Marie Vassiliou. Formed in 2006, it wasn't till four years later that the band would release their first studio LP, It's the Evil. In 2011, White Lung took home the Punk/Hardcore Artist/Group of the Year award at the Canadian Music Week Indie Awards. They began attracting even more attention with the release of their sophomore LP, 2012's Sorry.

He's back! Joey Bada$$ is back with his second official album release All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ in analog and digital formats.  Fans old and new are loving the new album that has features from such fellow rap talents as ScHoolboy Q and J.Cole. Released this week by Cinematic Music the anticipated new album All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ can be found at Amoeba in both CD and LP/vinyl versions. Longtime LA hip-hop DJ and Amoeba Hollywood hip-hop department member Monalisa took time this past week to carefully go through the twelve track album to write the following review: Joey Bada$$'s sophomore release still keeps him in place as the bridge from the golden era of hip-hop to the new age. He picks up where he left off lyrically, but on this effort his topics include America's current status and the powers that be. It's the variety of beats and the delivery of his message that pull you in to listen and feel where he's coming from. Just as the albums before this one, B4.Da.$$ (also on LP/vinyl) and 1999, All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ is a record that will stay in your rotation without being retired anytime soon. Standout songs: "Rockabye Baby," "Legendary," "For My People," and "Babylon."

DJ True Justice's New "Superb" Live Music Series, featuring Martin Luther and DAWNARI, Fills Vacuum in Bay Area Club Nightlife

Posted by Billyjam, April 8, 2017 01:51pm | Post a Comment

Saturday nights out on the town in Oakland or San Francisco present a dizzying choice of clubs/bars to head to with endless venues. The only thing is that most feature DJs spinning pre-recorded music, typically hip-hopr/rap or some strain of electronic dance, and generally geared for a younger demographic. But for "grown folk" who love music (especially live) and hitting the town on the weekend but are not fans of say mumble rap or the latest rapid BPM, thumping electronic dance music, when it comes to live music outside of overpriced concert halls and live music venues, the choices tend to be slim.

Hence tonight's premiere production of the progressive quality RnB/soul themed Superb music series at Oakland funky-but-fun NIght Light bar with performances from both San Francisco's neo-soul king Martin Luther and Oakland's on the rise stars: the hardworking jazzy tinged, R&b/soul fueled with a hip-hop sensibility instrumental & vocal ensemble DAWNARI.  Both live acts for only $10 tickets  (advance) is a welcome alternative to the Bay Area's often pricey weekend club nightlife scene.

New Green Room Session with Gemma Ray

Gemma Ray Amoeba Green Room Session

We recently had the pleasure of listening to British singer/songwriter Gemma Ray perform in our Green Room with drummer Andy Zammit. Between Ray's Twin Peaks-esque guitar tone and effects pedals and Zammit's ambidextrous drumming and keyboard skills, the duo were able to create a rich atmosphere of twangy, dark folk/pop, mixed with menacing psychedelia. Ray performed three songs, two of which are off her latest LP, The Exodus Suite.

Gemma Ray The Exodus Suite Amoeba MusicGemma Ray starts off her set with the slow burning journey of a tune, "Ifs & Buts," which starts as a dark slow dance but builds to a layered, sonic space jam. Be on the lookout for Gemma's kitchen knife strumming skills in this track!! Next is "How Long" a blues-y ballad with a subtle, midnight train rhythm. The session ends with "The Switch," a vibrato-y, shimmering gothic folk tune that shifts into a melancholic march of tinkling guitars.

Ray will be touring Australia and New Zealand later this month.

Ambassador of Confusion Hill and host of the Super Shangri-La Show

"People of Earth, you must heed my warning. Destroy your satellite receivers, dismantle your communications systems, render your TV sets inoperable for the next 200 Earth years."
- Pluthar of Pluton

What happens when an alien energy beam surges down a mutant Hungry Beast to the Putterman’s house on Putterman Lane?

Well, who's hanging out at the Putterman's house anyway, you may ask. We got Grandpa Putterman, who is a crazy military survivalist who makes his own lizard tail jerky, little boy Sherman Putterman, his punk rock sister Suzy and her heavy metal boyfriend named O.D., and, of course, their parents - who happen to be swingers - and their two swinger friends who are enjoying their sex-themed Pleasure Dome wing of the house. And how could I not mention the late night horror host, Medusa, who likes to party. (For any of you Russ Meyer fans, Medusa is very mammerable, um…I mean memorable, and you may have a flash-back to seeing her on Night Court or when she played a ditzy Dolly Parton-ish character on the “It Takes Two to Watusi” episode of Mama’s Family.) Welcome to the world of TerrorVision!

New 'What's In My Bag?' Episode with Gonjasufi

Gonjasufi What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

San Diego hip hop artist Gonjasufi was at Amoeba Hollywood recently diggin' through all kinds of records, and clued us into some of the things he looks for while shopping. "I don't know anything about this dude, what really got me was the price: 25 cents," he says pulling out a spoken word record by Low German writer Rudolf Kinau. Many of his picks were chosen by their cover, like Al Sigmund's Guitar Magic, which features the German guitarist playing his axe on a row boat in a lake. "In the water, playing electric, that takes some balls," he comments.

Gonjasufi Mandela Effect Amoeba MusicGonjasufi (né Sumach Ecks) began his musical career with San Diego hip-hop crew Masters of the Universe in the early '90s. A decade later, Ecks had connected with Flying Lotus and the Gaslamp Killer while visiting Los Angeles; his work began attracting attention after a 2008 guest turn on Flying Lotus' Los Angeles LP. Two years afterward, Gonjasufi released his debut album, A Sufi and a Killer, via Warp Records.

Recap: Charity Auction for MALDEF with Martin Moreno

Posted by Amoebite, April 3, 2017 10:42am | Post a Comment

charity auction at Amoeba Hollywood with Martin Moreno

On Saturday, April 1st our guest auctioneer, comedian Martin Moreno, held the gavel with a firm hand as he auctioned off a cool array of fun stuff to benefit the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund, which needs our help now more than ever. As Martin said "It is a great time to be brown in America!" (It was April 1st, right??)

Martin's comedy career began in his early 30s, and his twice-divorced take on "soul mates" and his personal journeys molded him into the hilarious, irreverent, badass standup comic he is today. He's co-hosted Comedy Central's Gabriel Iglesias Presents: Stand Up Revolution, voiced a character Hey, It's Fluffy!, and toured the U.S. and beyond gaining a loyal hardcore following. Catch him on Season 3 of Fluffy Breaks Even on FUSE in July with Gabriel Iglesias and follow him on Twitter: @martincomic.

Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (or MALDEF for short) was founded in 1968 and is the nation’s leading Latino legal civil rights organization. Often described as the “law firm of the Latino community,” MALDEF promotes social change through advocacy, communications, community education, and litigation in the areas of education, employment, immigrant rights, and political access. Their approach combines advocacy, educational outreach, and litigation strategies to achieve socio-economic change.

Here are some of the highlights and bids from today's auction:

A feeling of gloom was felt by hip-hop and electronic music fans around the world today as news spread of the passing of pioneering Japanese electronic instrument creator Ikutaro Kakehashi who died at age 87. Through the Roland company, which he founded, Kakehashi was responsible for the creation of such landmark electronic musical instruments as the 303, 808 and 909 drum machines. Of all of his creations, it was Kakehashi's iconic TR-808 drum machine, which helped shape the sound of popular hip-hop, electronic, and new wave rock music of the 80's into the 90's, that he will be best remembered for. Hence word of this pioneer's passing was met with sadness by artists whose careers directly benefited from Kakehashi's influential invention. Among those artists is legendary LA electro old school hip-hop artist Greg Broussard, aka DJ/ producer / MC The Egyptian Lover, whose sound is synonymous with the TR-808 drum machine as witnessed by a listen to his 1983-1988 album. That's the 2016 Stones Throw Records release that includes such 808 driven Egyptian Lover 80's hits as "Egypt, Egypt," "Girls," and Freak-A-Holic."  "Ikutaro Kakehashi's created the Roland TR-808 and the Roland Jupiter 8 along with a lot of other machines. These machines were the sound that made Egyptian Lover," Broussard told the Amoeblog via email today.  Back in November 2015, in advance of his LA and Bay Area Amoeba instores in support of his (then soon to drop) newly recorded double album with an 808 as part of its cover art design, 1984 (also on LP/vinyl) on Egyptian Empire Records, the artist talked to the Amoeblog about that album's throwback sound.
