Record Store Day 2017

It’s hard to believe, but it was just ten years ago that Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of indie record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and promulgate the unique culture of record stores. The first Record Store Day was held nation-wide on April 19, 2008, and all three Amoeba Music locations were joyously mobbed for special limited edition releases and all-day festive events.

With RSD 2017 on its way (April 22!), we look back at the nine we’ve celebrated at our stores and pick our favorite moments. We hope they were your favorite too.

April 19, 2008, Amoeba SF – The inaugural Record Store Day was certainly one to remember at Amoeba SF as we invited several local luminaries to DJ on the Amoeba stage throughout the day, including V. Vale of RE/Search Publications, Aaron Axelson of LIVE 105, and more. Then we asked Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys, Alternative Tentacles) to work at our Info Counter where he signed many an autograph!

April 18, 2009, Amoeba HollywoodWendy & Lisa of Prince's '80's lineup of The Revolution played a DJ set in support of their new album, White Flags of Winter Chimneys, while also simultaneously schmoozing with fans and babysitting several children. In a last-minute development, the legendary KISS guitarist Ace Frehley decided to swing by and hang out, so we set up a signing table!

April 17, 2010, Amoeba SF – Rock/fashion/film royalty Charlotte Gainsbourg joined us for a signing and then later in the day Jonsi (from Sigur Ros) played a highly-anticipated in-store show that filled the store wall to wall. Jonsi even played his ukulele (not pictured) on a few songs while we pined for Iceland.

April 17, 2010, Amoeba HollywoodGuns n' Roses guitarist Slash, top hat and all, signed copies of his new CD. Everyone who met him was bowled over by his charm and general rockitude, and was inspired to meet one of the true legends of Sunset Strip metal in person. Another legend, Spinderella (the DJ from Salt n' Pepa), DJed for us and dominated the booth with a slammin' selection of funk, electro, and pop breaks, all mixed and scratched live with original vinyl.

April 16, 2011, Amoeba HollywoodHenry Rollins (Black Flag, Rollins Band) spun California-themed songs and spoke to a huge crowd about the daily worship of music. Later in the day, Fucked Up kept the beats rolling and signed copies of their very own RSD release, David's Town.

April 16, 2011, Amoeba Berkeley – The legendary Al Jardine of the The Beach Boys played a few songs and spoke to a rapt crowd about recording Smile and Pet Sounds. Al brought his exclusive 7” that he sold to benefit the Red Cross's relief efforts for the damage from Japan’s tsunami. He ended up raising over $1,000 for the organization and thrilled long-time fans by signing copies. Later that day, The Lonely Island joined us for an intimate question and answer session, moderated by Jorma Taccone's own father, Berkeley Rep's Artistic Director Tony Taccone.

April 20, 2013, Amoeba Hollywood – Americana rock, folk, blues, and country singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams chatted with fans and picked out a playlist of her favorite songs. Jeff McDonald (singer, guitarist, and co-founder of Redd Kross) DJed, spinning an eclectic mix of K-Pop, rock, and more. Lance Rock, former Amoebite and current Yo Gabba Gabba! host, DJed as well.

April 18, 2015, Amoeba SF – We had a full roster of DJs including Radiohead drummer Philip Selway who played a selection of his favorites and signed albums. We scored a primo interview with Mr. Selway in which he discussed his love of record stores.

April 18, 2015, Amoeba Berkeley – We held an exciting day of DJ sets with Pam The Funkstress of The Coup, and a special edition of 45 Sessions with DJs Platurn and Enki who played only (you guessed it) 45s! That's a lot of talent under one roof!

April 16, 2016, Amoeba SF – We were joined by Pete Yorn and Kevin Martin, singer of '90's alternative darlings Candlebox, for DJ sets and signings of their new albums. Martin blew the roof off the place with a killer set of obscure punk 7"s. Even our experts were amazed! Both Yorn and Martin joined us up in the attics of Amoeba SF for a conversation about records.
