Oscar Nominated Soundtracks

On February 26th, the Oscars will take over Hollywood -- not to mention the TV screens of cinephiles around the globe. This year there's a bumper crop of exquisite soundtracks and enjoyable tunes to discover, so we're shining a spotlight (get it?) on what sets our hearts aflutter about the nominees in both the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories.

Jackie

Mica Levi - Jackie OST

The immensely-talented Mica Levi first got on our radar via her Micachu & the Shapes project, but her work as a film composer is equally vital. Her first foray into scores was 2014's highly-acclaimed work on Under the Skin.

La La Land

Justin HurwitzLa La Land OST

Hurwitz's score for this lovingly-shot Old Hollywood-style musical has already snagged a couple of Golden Globes - for Best Score and Best Song ("City of Stars"). This is the follow-up to his previous collaboration with director Damien Chazelle, on the Whiplash score.

Lion

Dustin O'Halloran and Hauschka -  Lion OST

Half of ambient duo A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Dustin O'Halloran teamed up with German pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) for the lovely, fitting soundtrack for Lion.

Moonlight Soundtrack

Nicholas Britell - Moonlight OST

Nicholas Britell's impressive film music career includes pieces in Whiplash, Twelves Years a Slave, and Free State of Jones, which also starred Mahershala Ali. Vinyl will be available February 17 in transparent blue or blue and black swirl.

Thomas Newman - Passengers OST

The uber-accomplished Newman has racked up fourteen Oscar and three Golden Globe nominations, plus two BAFTAS, six Grammys, and one Emmy award. Obviously, his work on this Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt vehicle is pretty compelling, too.

Honorable Mentions

Nocturnal Animals

Abel KorzeniowskiNocturnal Animals OST

Although not nominated, the soundtrack to director and designer Tom Ford's recent cinematic outing gets high marks for this enchanting score. Korzeniowski had previously worked with Ford on the score for A Single Man; you may also recognize his work from Penny Dreadful.

Arrival

Jóhann Jóhannsson - Arrival OST

The prolific Icelandic experimental composer's work doesn't get much better than his score for Arrival, which was unfortunately disqualified from the category for using a previously-released Max Richter piece.

Best Original Song

La La Land

"Audition (Fools Who Dream)" and "City of Stars" from La La Land

Music by Justin Hurwitz; Lyric by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul

In addition to a Best Original Score nod, La La Land is in the running for Best Original Song with two possible nominees, "Audition" and "City of Stars." The latter track has already taken home a Golden Globe win.

Trolls

"Can't Stop the Feeling" from Trolls

Music and Lyric by Justin Timberlake, Max Martin and Karl Johan Schuster

One of the biggest names in pop, JT, teams up with Martin and Schuster, two of the most respected producers in contemporary music for this fun, family track. They just won a Grammy award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Jim: The James Foley Story

"The Empty Chair" from Jim: The James Foley Story

Music and Lyric by J. Ralph and Sting

Social activist and respected documentary film composer J. Ralph teamed up with the inimitable Sting for this powerful track, heard in HBO's recent doc on the fallen photojournalist James Foley.

Moana

"How Far I’ll Go" from Moana

Music and Lyric by Lin-Manuel Miranda

Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda brings his amazing songwriting abilities to the world of Disney with this inspiring, catchy track from recent hit Moana.
