Oakland's Ghost Ship Fire: List of Fund Drives & Bay Area Benefit Concerts

The Ghost Ship

As everywhere across the Bay Area and beyond, we here at Amoeba Music are still reeling in shock from the news of the devastating, deadly Ghost Ship inferno. At this time our solemn thoughts are with the victims and their families and friends. Located in East Oakland's Fruitvale district the warehouse was described as a home, studio, venue, and safe space for local artists, filmmakers, painters, musicians, dancers, and their families. The tragedy at the space occurred late last Friday night, during the beginning stages of an all night electronic dance party that was a show for 100% Silk, the dance music imprint of the Not Not Fun record label. One of the record label's artists Cherushii (33-year-old San Franciscan Chelsea Dolan who was also a KALX Berkeley DJ) was among the victims of the fatal blaze. Tragically she was just one of four volunteers at the UC Berkeley radio station killed in the fire. The others were Griffin Madden (aka DJ Laura), Vanessa Plotkin, and Jennifer Morris.

Reportedly, the deadly fire broke out suddenly and rapidly spread throughout the below-code wooden structure, leaving few escape options for those trapped inside the fiery smoke-filled building. As of the time of posting this Amoeblog, the number reported dead stood at 36, mostly from smoke inhalation according to authorities. Many of the names have still to be officially identified, while many of the identified victims still have not been publicly announced out of respect for their families. Somewhat heartening  however was the announcement made earlier today by an Oakland Fire Dept. official that, even with 15% of the charred building remaining to be investigated, that they are hopeful and confident that the death toll figure will not rise much higher, if at all, above 36.

In addition to the aforementioned Cherushii, among those who perished in the fiery tragedy were such friends of Amoeba as 22-year-old electronic musician Cash Askew (Them Are Us Too) and 35-year-old sound engineer Barrett Clark. Clark, who was handling the mixing board for Friday night's event, frequently did sound engineering for Amoeba in-store shows at both the Amoeba Berkeley and San Francisco locations. A brief but special dedication honoring Barrett Clark appears below, following all the listings. Also below is a list of the many ways that you can show your support for victims and families of this tragic fire. Meantime for news updates follow both local major media outlets and the dedicated official City Of Oakland website page as well as their Twitter account @Oakland.

Set up for those with family members or friends somehow associated with the fire, is the Family Assistance Center. Located at 2425 E. 12th Street, it is a joint project of the Red Cross and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office set up specifically for family and friends affected by the fire to get information. There is also grief counseling provided at that location that many have been taking advantage of. Additionally those in need of emotional support may talk directly with a trained Crisis Counselor by texting BAY to 741741, SAFE to 20121, or by calling the Alameda Crisis Line at 1-800-309-2131. Meantime those affiliated with KALX and UC Berkeley seeking emotional support are advised to contact UC's Counseling and Psychological Services at (510) 642-9494 (for students), and Employee Assistance at
(510) 643-7754 for staffers.

Last night -- Monday, December 5th -- there were several gatherings across the Bay Area to honor and mourn the victims of this tragedy including one in San Francisco's Castro district focusing on the LGBTQ victims. Another was the large vigil/gathering at Lake Merritt in Oakland where a crowd of over a thousand gathered to show their respect. Nearby the bright
marquee above the entrance to Oakland's historic Grand Lake Theatre offered its condolences including to "our own Denalda" in reference to Nicole Renae Siegrist aka Denalda, aka synth / Omni Chord player VafaDenaldaDonorous and one half of Oakland synth pop duo Introflirt whose singer Ben Benjamin Runnels (aka Charlie Prowler) was also killed in Friday's fire. At the vigil/gathering by the lake Monday night many in the crowd vented their outrage, in the form of boos directed at speaker Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf of the gentrified city. The shared feeling is that part of the blame lies with a city where affordable housing is so out of reach for most young artists that they are forced to seek shelter in illegal spaces like the converted "Ghost Ship" warehouse. But mostly the tone of last night's event was a respectful, solemn, and sad one. The gathering also demonstrated what a diverse, supportive, close-knit community Oakland is with so

many sectors of the community banding together in their support. The City of Oakland joined forces with the Red Cross to set up the YouCaring website with links to various GoFundMe drives.

To date, the response has been phenomenal with 54,000 shares to the site via Facebook alone and people from all over the world donating money and resources. Those fund drives are included in the list below along with a non-monetary resource set up for those seeking, and those offering housing for individuals displaced by the fire. Also included below is a list of Bay Area benefit concerts planned for this week, and into the coming weeks.  Note that there will be other benefit concerts happening outside the Bay Area too not included here such as this evening's CyberSonic benefit at LA's The LASH (117 Winston St.) from 10pm 'til 2am.

[12/12/16 Update/Edit: In the week since this Amoeblog was initially posted the outpouring of support and levels of grief toward the Ghost Ship tragedy have been unprecedented on both a local and global level. Over this past weekend alone, high profile artists expressing their grief included performers Moby and Green Day. Last night, Sunday Dec. 11th, Moby performed for free at the Mezzanine benefit in San Francisco as a show of his support. And on Saturday night at Oakland's big Oracle Arena Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong between songs paid tribute to the victims, dedicating the American Idiot album song "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" to them. Also in the past week, many new last minute benefit shows in the Bay Area have been planned including one with Primus and Boots Riley & The Coup and others at the Fox Theater in Oakland on Wednesday (Dec. 14th). That show and others have been since added to the list of benefit shows below - scroll down]
