In the wake of the emotionally draining presidential election, this week more than ever music offers the stressed citizens of this nation a much needed escape / distraction. Hence the timing of the release today of the hotly anticipated new A Tribe Called Quest album, We Got It From Here, Thank You for Your Service (Epic Records) could not be more perfect.

Besides the fact that the group, who once recorded the soothing "Stressed Out," are known for their relaxing jazzy brand of hip-hop (hence the perfect music to chill and escape to) this album [pre-order physical from Amoeba] is a landmark hip-hop release. It is the final album from a group that many believed would never record together again. We Got It From Here, Thank You for Your Service is A Tribe Called Quest's sixth studio album over a 26 year period dating back to their 1990 debut People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. Note, despite ATCQ's continued chill vibe on the new album, lyrically it does not shy from addressing current affairs. Most notable is the new album song "We The People" (scroll all the way down to see the just released accompanying official lyric music video) with such lyrics as Q-Tip's paraphrasing of the president elect's campaign message: "You Black folks, you must go. All you Mexicans, you must go And all you poor folks, you must go Muslims and gays, boy, we hate your ways So all you bad folks, you must go."

Beats Rhymes & LifeThe new Tribe album, been released digitally onlytoday and physically next week, is the group's first album in nearly two full decades (18 years ago they released The Love Movement). More poignantly it will be the legendary Queens NY crew's final album. That sadly is due to the tragic passing of beloved member Phife Dawg who, at the young age of 45, passed away in March of this year due to complications from Type 1 diabetes, something he had quietly suffered from for almost half his life. The shocking and sudden death of the artist born Malik Taylor and known also as Phife Diggy and The Five-Foot Assassin occurred right in the middle of the new album's recording, a surprise project that came together following group members having been on the outs for a long time. For full backstory on this be sure to view Michael Rapaport's excellent documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest which both captures the hip-hop musical greats and and inner conflicts they endured as a group  As such.We Got It From Here, Thank You for Your Service is more than just another rap album. It is a landmark release: a tribute to both the life of Phife Dawg and the legacy of A Tribe Called Quest, arguably one of the greatest hip-hop acts ever!

2016 We Got It From Here, Thank You for Your Service  (Epic)

We Got It From Here, Thank You for Your Service features all four members of the reunited group in the studio together:  Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Jarobi White, and the late great Phife Dawg. Additionally are such album contributors as Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, André 3000, The Low End Theory Elton John, Anderson .Paak, Kanye West, and Talib Kweli, plus longtime Tribe collaborators Consequence and Busta Rhymes.  In an interview with the UK Guardian yesterday Busta Rhymes noted how, among what makes this new Tribe album stand out from most modern era hip-hop collaborations, is that it not done remotely and electronically, but rather organically in the old tradition of the artists all in the studio physically together recording in real time and creatively feeding off of each other. "When you write your verse and know your man is in the room with you and you look at him reacting to his own bars that he’s impressing himself with, you wanna go over there and hear what he’s got to say," said Rhymes adding how after hearing the recording back that, "you might go back and change a few of your lines because we were respectfully competing and inspiring each other”.
