"Guitar Mood 2" - Instrumental Compilation Like No Other (Except "Guitar Mood 1")

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, September 28, 2016 06:59pm | Post a Comment

Guitar Mood 2- By Kai Wada Roath
Ambassador of Confusion Hill and host of the Super Shangri-La Show

The music had taken full control and into the vortex of madness she was drawn, dancing in circles like a whirling Dervish that had gone pleasantly, yet totally, insane. Mark my words, ye readers of this review, for this situation of delight just happened last evening in my living room while listening to the first song on Guitar Mood 2 -- Takeshi Teruauchi and the Bunnys playing their rendition of Beethoven's Symphony No.5.

If you would like there to be dancing at your next party or in your living room in general, I recommend this album for the following life changing reasons:

From the vinyl treasure vaults of the great Michael Lucas of The Phantom Surfers, Guitar Mood 2 is a instrumental compilation created like no other...err, except perhaps for Guitar Mood 1, but finding Guitar Mood 1 in the wild may be as rare as finding a walnut-sized gold nugget while panning for river shine with a Marie Calendar pie pan for that album is truly mind-boggling amazing. If you find Guitar Mood 1, new or used, it is an omen for years of good luck.

Guitar Mood 2 will whisk you away to wondrous, exotic lands with strumming surf sounds and cumbias Belkingsthat are blended with the traditional folk melodies of Turkey, Japan, Colombia, Peru, and Finland by bands such as Los Belkings, Los Siderals, Siluetler, and more!

Seven Nina Simone Vinyl Reissues On the Way Via Verve

Posted by Amoebite, September 27, 2016 04:45pm | Post a Comment

Nina Simone Vinyl Reissues

From the mid to late 1960s, Nina Simone recorded seven albums for the Philips label considered by many to be the zenith of her recording career. These works feature some of her most well-known tracks and cover a lot of territory, from "Sinnerman" to "Mood Indigo" to "Strange Fruit." Earlier this year, Verve released a vinyl box set of these albums, The Philips Years. Now, on September 30th, each LP included in that collection will be available as a 180-gram vinyl reissue.

Here's what you need to know about these massively influential albums.

Nina Simone in Concert

Nina Simone in Concert (1964)

Recorded at Carnegie Hall over the course of three different concert appearances, Simone's first album for Philips shows her evolution from Greenwich Village folk/jazz stylist to outspoken civil rights activist. The LP features classic tracks "Mississippi Goddamn," "I Loves You Porgy," and "Pirate Jenny."

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Catfish and the Bottlemen

Posted by Amoebite, September 27, 2016 12:38pm | Post a Comment

Catfish & the Bottlemen What's In My Bag?

Van and Bondy from British rock band Catfish and the Bottlemen went record shopping at Amoeba Hollywood recently and shared a few of their favorite lyricists, from Father John Misty to Eels, and picked up a fantastic mix of rock, jazz, film music, psych and more.

Catfish & the Bottlemen The Ride

Catfish and the Bottlemen formed in 2007 in Llandudno, Wales by Ryan Evan "Van" McCann. He was later joined by Benjamin Blakeway, Robert Hall, and Johnny Bond. The band is named after Catfish the Bottleman, a busker McCann frequently encountered during his childhood in Sydney, Australia. They got their start by playing in parking lots after other big name indie acts finished their shows. In 2013, the band signed to Communion Records, later signing to Island for their debut studio album, 2014's The Balcony.

In May of this year, the band released their sophomore LP, The Ride, via Capitol Records. The album peaked at number 28 on the US Billboard Top 200 charts. They also took home the award for British Breakthrough Act at the 2016 Brit Awards. The band is currently on tour in the United States, including opening a few dates with Mumford & Sons.

R.I.P. Herschell Gordon Lewis, the Godfather of Gore

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, September 26, 2016 08:02pm | Post a Comment

Today Something Weird Video broke the news that Herschell Gordon Lewis -- “godfather of gore,” Herschell Gordon Lewis“sultan of splatter,” and direct marketing guru -- passed away. He may have been 87 years old or he may have been 90 years old, he may have been a genius or he may have been a highly creative hack (he'd probably say, what's the difference?), but one thing is certain -- the world of cinema was changed forever when the former English professor-gone-ad exec-gone nudie cutie filmmaker decided to combine his interests in exploitation film, marketing, and bloody Grand Guignol-style theater with 1963's Blood Feast (made with his business partner David F. Friedman).

Considered the first American gore film, Blood Feast follows the adventures of Fuad Ramses as he Blood Feastmurders young women in order to create an "Egyptian feast" for the goddess Ishtar. A tongue is cut out, legs are cut off, brains are removed, and the viewing audience got to see it all in all it's bright red Technicolor glory. Like any forward-thinking writer/ad man/smut peddler, H.G. Lewis understood his market and his market was made up of the horny kids at the Drive-In. Lewis went on to make countless more works of gory art in quick succession, including Two Thousand Maniacs (1964), Color Me Blood Red (1965), A Taste of Blood and The Gruesome Twosome (1967), She-Devils on Wheels (1968), The Wizard of Gore (1970), and The Gore Gore Girls (1972), just to name some of the most memorable. Some years he released five to seven films, often designing the poster and hitting the booking market before making the film.

Amoeblog Interview With Author Jeff Chang on his Timely New Book "We Gon' Be Alright: Notes On Race and Resegregation"

Posted by Billyjam, September 20, 2016 03:18pm | Post a Comment

The publication of provocative, powerful, prolific, pioneering hip-hop generation author/scholar Jeff Chang's latest book We Gon' Be Alright: Notes On Race and Resegregation is most timely. The book by the author of the award winning hip-hop history book Can't Stop, Won't Stop arrives at a time in America when race clearly matters, and when unfair and unlawful treatment by police against African Americans appears to way beyond out of control.  Just last week in the days since the book's publication (paperback & audiobook read by author) there were two more shocking shootings of black American males by police: 13 year old Tyre King in Columbus Ohio, and 40 year old unarmed Terrence Cruthcer in Tulsa,OK last Friday. The latter, whose police video footage was just released this week, is the most shocking and disturbing of the two because of the footage. In it you see an unarmed, complying black man stopped on freeway by a row of armed cops, been shot down dead in the street. The video footage at every angle includes even an aerial shot from the police chopper above in which one cop is recorded on the police radio for all others to hear just moments before the killing, in a glaring example of racial profiling, that the unarmed victim "looks like a bad dude."

Last week Chang began a hectic cross-country tour in support of his new publication. The book tour is a series of readings plus interviews and lively discussions at universities (including Princeton, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and University of Chicago) and varied literary venues across the country.  At many of these readings the widely respected author of  the acclaimed Can't Stop, Won't Stop is joined by a series of scholars, social observers, and fellow hop-hop generation journalists. Scroll down to see listing of book tour dates. "Linking #BlackLivesMatter to #OscarsSoWhite, Ferguson to Washington D.C., the Great Migration to resurgent nativism and exploring "the rise and fall of the idea of “diversity”, the roots of student protest, changing ideas about Asian Americanness, and the impact of a century of racial separation in housing" while arguing that "resegregation is the unexamined condition of our time, the undoing of which is key to moving the nation forward to racial justice and cultural equity" is the activist author's apt summary of his latest book.  This week the Amoeblog caught up with the author from on the road to ask him about his book, the book tour, the social ramifications of his books' subjects and the hip-hop music that best expresses outrage on these topics.

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with DJ Spinna

Posted by Amoebite, September 20, 2016 12:24pm | Post a Comment

DJ Spinna What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

"I'm gonna give away a little b-boy secret...this record by Cerrone, 'Look For Love,' is a very popular b-boy break," says DJ Spinna of the 7" released by the Cotillion label. But be careful, he warns us, sometimes they edit the breaks out of the singles. The accomplished and much sought after DJ was recently at Amoeba Hollywood, giving away some great record collecting advice and offering up killer recommendations.

Wonder-full LABrooklyn-born hip-hop producer DJ Spinna is a genre-bender whose work dabbles in rap, soul, funk, electronica, and jazz. He first came to prominence in the late '90s underground hip-hop scene thanks to his work with The Jigmastas. He has produced and remixed tracks for some of the biggest names in the contemporary music scene, including Mary J. Blige, Nightmares on Wax, Guru, J-Live, De La Soul, Eminem, Stevie Wonder, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Roy Ayers, and many more.

Bob Weir & Bill Frisell Join Wilco For Perfect Closing Set of Mount Tam Music Fest

Posted by Billyjam, September 19, 2016 05:06pm | Post a Comment

Longtime post-Americana alt rock faves Wilco finished their headlining set on Saturday (Sept. 17th) at Mount Tam's Sound Summit festival with an encore set that featured surprise guests Bob Weir and Bill Frisell. Guitar genius Frisell, who had done an earlier afternoon Guitar In The Space Age themed set at the Marin mountaintop festival, joined the headliners for two songs before the Grateful Dead member (who plays Amoeba Hollywood Sept 27) plugged in his guitar and joined all seven other musicians for "California Stars" and an inspired multi-guitar fueled rendition of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." This closing to an already killer set by Wilco, their sixth Bay Area concert in the past two weeks, topped off a perfect day at the third annual music festival that also featured Los Lobos, The Stone Foxes, and Matt Jaffe  Long a hip-hop music fan rather than rock, admittedly I was not familiar with Wilco's music before attending Saturday's all day event at the 2000 foot altitude amphitheater. But en route up the winding Marin mountain drive to the concert I was accurately informed by a colleague that, "Wilco are the sort of band that even if you don't know their music, you'll immediately feel like you do!" Depending on your level of enthusiasm or your level of cynicism, that could be viewed as a good or bad thing. For me it was a good thing. But for Amoeba Wilco bio writer John Schacht not as much. "Churning out the most bland music ever made that people actually like," he wrote of the band but in reference more to their earlier work before they began to explore new musical directions, something I learned all about during Saturday's
satisfying show.

The Chicago based band formed 21 years ago and their current six-member lineup, including founding members Jeff Tweedy and John Stirratt, has remained constant for the past dozen years. The songs in the first part of their concert on Saturday, with the band's lush rich full sound coupled with singer/front man Tweedy's Dylan-ish vocals, reminded me not so much of Zimmerman senior but his son Jakob's band The Wallflowers. But before I could pigeon-hole Wilco's sound, they'd already shifted gears and smoothly morphed into some totally different sound. They went off on experimental musical tangent and did it well, then later they nailed a soaring acid rock guitar jam, and then later drifted off into country rock: a sound I learned that dates back to their Uncle Tupelo roots.

Akumaizer 3: Tokusatsu Friends Forever

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, September 18, 2016 06:17pm | Post a Comment

Akumaizer 3

- By Kai Wada Roath
Ambassador of Confusion Hill and host of the Super Shangri-La Show

"The world is far, the world is wide, the man needs someone by his side..."
-- Eden Ahbez, "The Wanderer"

Akumaizer 3One must ponder if the nature boy Eden Ahbez wrote the lyrics to "The Wanderer" while sitting in lotus position in the famous cave at Leo Carrillo beach in Malibu back in 1960 and astral-projecting his spirit out into the pacific ocean, past the waves and into the future. Fifteen years into the future to be exact, to the floating kingdom of Japan, for it would be there in 1975 that Toei Studios would release the tokusatsu tv series Akumaizer 3, about a half human/half demon hero named Xavitan, who needed someone by his side...to defeat the evil Akuma "Devil" Clan that is!

Those two by his side would soon be none other that his super-demon goofy buddies turned good, Iburu, a yellow-dressed fancy-pants who like to blast bad guys with his famous Jo Gun, and Gabura, a blubbery water demon who seems to always spring leaks and can transform into a huge dorky ostrich-type monster. (Gabura also looks like a giant chocolate soft-serve from a Sizzler dessert station.) At the climax of every battle scene, the three heroes combine forces and use their fencing swords together (cue three musketeers theme) against the Akuma Clan.

Atop Mount Tam, "Sound Summit" [Los Lobos, Wilco, Bill Frisell] Proves That Like Bay Property, Best Venues Are All About Location

Posted by Billyjam, September 16, 2016 08:17pm | Post a Comment

Tomorrow's Sound Summit music event in Marin County featuring Los Lobos, Wilco, Bill Frisell's Guitar In The Space Age, The Stone Foxes, and Matt Jaffe is proof that the location of a venue can greatly enhance the enjoyment of an already great music concert. As with housing, it's all about location, location, location! And the Bay Area is blessed with a rich variety of locations for outdoor concerts. Some are better than others. The Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View is generally liked but is not my personal favorite. This is because of fact it was built on reclaimed land (a dump), and consequently has omitted at times  some harsh smells into the air.  Favorable outdoor venue locations in the Bay Area  include the Greek Theater in Berkeley, and Stern Grove in San Francisco. But few outdoor concert spaces in the Bay (or anywhere) can match the majestic location of the annual Sound Summit that takes place in an historic stone amphitheater set high atop Mount Tamalpalis. There, within the high elevation California State Park, the 4000 seater Mountain Theater is surrounded by lush redwoods and has absolutely breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay. This perfect view provides the perfect backdrop to a concert event like tomorrow's all day music festival.

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with Allah-Lahs

Allah-Lahs - What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

We recently had the pleasure of having modern garage rock band (and former Amoebites) Allah-Lahs here at Amoeba Hollywood. That's right, not only are they one of the coolest bands around town, but three of the four members are Amoeba alums! When asked what record he was always looking for while working at the store, drummer Matthew Correia answered, "I was always imagining the day when I was gonna find some original Spacemen 3 records." That day never came, but the guys did find some other great albums on their latest visit.

Allah-Lahs Calico Amoeba MusicAllah-Las consisit of vocalist/guitarist Miles Michaud, guitarist/vocalist Pedrum Siadatian, bassist/vocalist Spencer Dunham, and drummer/vocalist Matthew Correia. In 2011 the quartet released their first 7", "Catamaran/Long Journey," featuring production by old school soul-inspired singer and guitarist Nick Waterhouse. A year later, the band released their self-titled debut for Innovative Leisure, which was also produced by Waterhouse.

Long Overdue His Time In The Spotlight, Art Rap Lyrical Master Open Mike Eagle Forges Ahead With Each Unique New Project

Open Mike Eagle
, whose latest project with producer Paul White Hella Personal Film Festival (also on LP) was ceremoniously launched earlier this year with an in-store at Amoeba Hollywood is a hip-hop wordsmith who transcends the genre with his clever wordplay. More importantly he is an artist long overdue his rightful time to shine in the spotlight. Yes Open Mike Eagle is well known (and rightfully respected) in underground, alternative hip-hop circles, especially in LA where the Chicago transplant came up in hip-hop over the past decade. But he is not nearly the superstar rapper that he deserves to be. He possesses ten times more lyrical skills than the average pop rapper today.  Many say that he slowly is getting the attention he deserves, especially with the new album collaboration with Danny Brown producer Paul White. His label Mello Music Group (MMG) just recently published the accompanying music video for the pair's album track "Smiling (Quirky Race Doc)."

A Brief But Groovy Journey Into the History of Colored Vinyl

A Brief History of Colored Vinyl

Vocalion
Perfect
Columbia Royal Blue Records

A lot of folks are saying colored vinyl is back and they're right. From the smoke-colored indie exclusive version of the Stranger Things soundtrack to the latest round of Black Sabbath re-issues in red, blue, green, orange, purple, white, and combinations thereof, colored vinyl is adding collectible and aesthetic value to new releases and re-issues alike these days. But if it's making a comeback, where did it come from in the first place? What was the first slab of colored wax? Was it some far-out blotter-inspired psychedelia from the late '60s, an organ-fueled exotica LP from the '50's, a Disney 78 from the '40s? The actual answer may surprise you.

Historic Event For A City That Once Banned Rap, Oakland's Hiero Day 2016 Elevated It To Best Damn Hip-Hop Festival Ever

Posted by Billyjam, September 7, 2016 07:07am | Post a Comment

Oakland's annual all day hip-hop festival, Hiero Day 2016 that took place two days ago, was both amazing and historic. Only in its fifth year, the Hieroglyphics collective curated event has not only already established itself as the best annual music and cultural festival in The Town (Oakland). But this annual Labor Day's sold-out, talent-packed, festival comprised of three different concert stages, each offering top notch and totally diverse hip-hop acts, elevated Hiero Day into the best damn hip-hop festival anywhere! Attended by respectful hip-hop fans of all generations and races, but each sharing an appreciation for all styles of hip-hop, Hiero Day 2016 exuded the most positive, peaceful, uplifting vibe of any hip-hop event of its scale that I have ever witnessed anywhere. And that prevailing positive vibe that permeated the air on Monday all seemed to fuel  the energy of the acts on stage and their tight sets. Monday's diverse list of over 50 performers included Too $hort, Paris, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, Dilated Peoples, Murs, Mr. Lif, Just Blaze, Young L, and the Hieros themselves..

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with Earl Sweatshirt & Samiyam

Posted by Amoebite, September 6, 2016 11:31am | Post a Comment

Earl Sweatshirt Samiyam Amoeba Music What's In My Bag?

Rapper Earl Sweatshirt and producer Samiyam are always looking for the answers to life's more profound questions like, "What's a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength to do after he's eliminated crime from his hometown?" Hopefully they'll find the answer while watching The Toxic Avenger III: The Last Temptation of Toxie, Troma Entertainment's third installment in their cult-classic series. The pair picked up a pile of Troma DVDs, including such think pieces as Mad Cow, Viral Assassins, and Redneck Zombies, as well as a healthy and eclectic stack of records on their recent visit to Amoeba Hollywood. All the while the two gave out some good sampling tips and Ethiopian food recommendations.

Recently Reunited Invisibl Skratch Piklz Pitch Perfectly Recreate "The 13th Floor" @ Packed Amoeba Berkeley In-Store Performance

Posted by Billyjam, September 5, 2016 01:14pm | Post a Comment

The Invisibl Skratch Piklz, featurnig the talented trio of DJs Qbert, D-Styles and Shortkut,  did a mind blowing in-store set followed by a meet-and-greet for a packed-to-capacity Amoeba Music Berkeley on Saturday evening. Coinciding with the pioneering Bay Area turntablist crew's anticipated soon-to-drop new album, The 13th Floor on Galactic Butt Hair, they effortlessly delivered a jaw-dropping, next-level turntable manipulation performance to wild loud applause. All the more impressive of their half-hour set, was that it was a flawless, pitch-perfect reworking of the reunited group's new nine track LP. Note that the album does not officially get released until Friday (September 9th) but Amoeba shoppers had the opportunity to buy it early and get the record signed too. The unprecedented huge crowd turnout not only packed the jazz-room performance area of the Telegraph Ave. store but spilled into the next room too with fans eager to catch in person these three local legends. In fact so many were jammed into Amoeba that some fans went back outside onto the street to peer through the window for a glimpse of these living legends. Most fans of the Piklz  thought would never perform again after they broke up at their peak back up in the late nineties.

Hiero Day 2016 Video Preview

Posted by Billyjam, September 5, 2016 01:04pm | Post a Comment

Already underway with things started, there's still time for Bay Area hip-hop fans to head on over to the fifth, latest, and best ever Hiero Day 2016 in Oakland. Previous years have been really good but this one, with all the wonderful diver acts on the bill, looks like it beats all previous years. It's an all ages event and is great for kids too since it has such an incredibly peaceful and positive vibe. Most things run close to their schedules but sometimes, like last year, things can run a bit late, especially later in the day. So be patient realistic and don't take the above schedule literally but rather as good guideline to the running order of acts and their set running lengths. In honor of this unique and wonderful cultural event that the hometown Hieroglyphics hip-hop crew (who headline) produce and present, below are a series of corresponding music videos for several of the acts to hit the three concert stages (Full Circle, Third Eye, and Infinity) later today including Dilated Peoples, Murs, Too $hort, The Beat Junkies, The Grouch, Nef The Pharaoh, Juvenile, Lyrics Born, Invisibl Skratch Piklz and Young L. Note that pre-sale tix are no longer available but you can buy tix at the gate. More info on Hiero Day 2016

New Pearl Jam LP and 7" Vinyl Reissues Available

Pearl Jam vinyl reissues

A veritable bonanza of Pearl Jam reissues hit our shelves this morning, including two long out-of-print LPs and five (yes, five!) 7" singles. The new releases are in honor of the legendary grunge rockers' 1996 album, No Code, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year. They've also reissued Yield, their 1998 follow-up. The newly reissued 7"s are the singles from both albums.

Read on to find why we're excited about each release.

No Code

No Code (LP)

Out of print on vinyl since its original 1996 release date, No Code has long been a sought-after, expensive collectors' item. It has been newly mastered specifically for vinyl by Grammy Award-winning engineer Bob Ludwig and released on 150-gram vinyl, with recreated artwork. If you pick this up, you'll also receive one of four Polaroid lyric cards.
