We're a little past the half-way mark of 2016 already, so it seemed like a perfect time to reflect upon the fantastic in-store shows we've put on at all three of our Amoeba locations: San Francisco, Berkeley, and Hollywood. Each and every live performance we present at our stores is a unique and thrilling experience for the audience and staff, but some shows just have that extra bit of magic to make them stand out as our favorites. Enjoy our lists of top five in-store shows of 2016 (so far)!

Amoeba Bay Area: San Francisco & Berkeley

The Mystery Lights at Amoeba SF: July 31, 2016
Every so often we book a band right before or just as they explode onto the scene in a big way. Although The Mystery Lights has put out a couple of releases since 2009, the NY-by-way-of-Salinas, California band just released their self-titled debut on Daptone Records' new subsidiary Wick and it's gaining momentum. Their sound is sinister garage - the darker side of the '60s Nuggets, Pebbles, and Back From The Grave comps. Think the proto-punk of The Seeds, The Sonics, Jesters of Newport. Unlike many garage rock revivalists, The Mystery Lights don't just recreate the sound; these guys channel it spiritually, putting on a raucous show led by the howling, jumping, guitar-wielding Mike Brandon.

Death Angel at Amoeba SF: May 26, 2016
Bay Area thrash legends Death Angel decimated the Amoeba SF stage in celebration of the release of their eighth album, The Evil Divide. They may be well into their third decade as a band, but the metal is as strong and sharp as ever with these guys. The current line-up - Mark Osegueda (vocals), Rob Cavestany (lead guitar), Ted Aguilar (guitar), Will Carroll (drums), and Damien Sisson (bass) - sawed their way through a half-hour of scorching tunes to a huge crowd of head-banging fans, both new and original.

Violent Femmes at Amoeba SF: May 10, 2016
Punk-folk heroes the Violent Femmes played to a packed store in honor of the release of We Can Do Anything, their ninth studio album and first full-length collection in over 15 years. Their set was short but oh-so-sweet as they finished with fan-favorite "American Music," which has become a sing-a-long anthem for most of us. Another crowd-pleasing touch was the Weber BBQ that drummer John Sparrow played!

Hinds at Amoeba SF: March 29, 2016
Madrid-based all-gal garage rockers Hinds took America by storm this Spring, absolutely stealing the show at SXSW (playing 17 shows there!) and topping countless music journalists' lists of must-see new acts. Their energetic set thrilled a store full of dancing fans and was followed by a signing of their debut album Leave Me Alone.

La Santa Cecilia at Amoeba Berkeley: March 16, 2016
Grammy Award-winning Los Angeles-based outfit La Santa Cecilia may very well also hold the award for Most Amoeba Shows Played (or at least place runner-up to Dave Gleason and John Doe) and have completed the Amoeba circuit with their most recent appearance at Amoeba Berkeley. Incorporating inspiration from around the world, their music is pure fun and combines Latin rhythms like rumba, cumbia, tango, and bossa nova with rock, klezmer, jazzy hi-jinks, and more. The Berkeley store was packed with dancing fans who, upon the end of the group's set, demanded, "Otra! Otra!" Check out their latest album, Buenaventura.
