V/A - Taboo: An Exploration into the Exotic World of Taboo Vol. 1 (Stag-O-Lee)

The first of a series dubbed Journey To The Centre Of The Song (each volume celebrating a singular tune by exploring a sampling of various recorded versions), this 10" contains nine genre-spanning interpretations of the popular standard "Taboo" (or "Tabou" or "Tabu") composed by Cuban musician Margarita Lecuona, a lady also responsible for the classic "Babalou". From Charles Blackwell's raucous "Surf'stramental" opener to the brassy cha-cha of Tito Rivera, and from the island rhythms of Cyril Diaz to Sylvia Mora's noir popcorn grind, all these and more buttoned up nicely by Arthur Lyman's own sensual evocation, nothing feels forbidden about the magic of examining these songs altogether or individually. In fact, it feels great to have them all in one place.

Leroy Moore's Krip-Hop Nation Planning Anniversary Compilation, Book, Documentary, and Tour of South Africa

Posted by Billyjam, August 30, 2016 11:48pm | Post a Comment

The Krip-Hop Nation has a busy upcoming six month period ahead with a planned krip-hop book, a documentary, and a tour of South Africa all planned for late 2016 and early 2017. He also has a compilation of the best of the past decade of Krip-Hop Nation's music planned for sometime in 2017. According to artist/activist Leroy Moore, the founder of the Berkeley CA based international organization of hip-hop artists with disabilities, the first item on the agenda is the tour of South Africa. "Thanks to This Ability Newspaper and Simon Manda, we're going to be going to South Africa on November 5th through December 10th when we're going to do a whole South African tour," Moore told the Amoeblog recently in an interview conducted at his Berkeley apartment/office. "I am raising $8000 for the tour documentary and new book," he added of the recently set up Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign that will finance a documentary about the tour as well as a book by Krip-Hop Nation artists. He said that the network of krip-hop artists in South Africa, with whom he's been communicating closely with with for a while, are hooking up everything from the venues to play to places to stay." In addition to going toward the production expenses of making a documentary of the upcoming tour and the publishing of the future book (a collection of essays, poetry and lyrics by US and African krip-hop artists), the Indiegogo campaign will also fund equipment that will make the tour more accessible for wheelchairs etc.

Amoeba SF Acquires Over 600 Vintage Jazz Magazines

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, August 29, 2016 08:02pm | Post a Comment

Jazz Review, Vintage magazinesAmoeba Music SF recently acquired over 600 vintage Jazz magazines, spanning from the late 1940s to the early 1990s! Titles include Down Beat, Metronome, Jazz Review, Jazz Journal (UK), CODA (Canada), and more. These issues are in great shape and you have to see them to believe them. Beautiful photography and design in both color and black & white grace the covers of these collectible time capsules of the Jazz scene. Come down to Amoeba SF and check them out in both the Magazines/Books section and in the glass collectors' case in the Jazz section.

Of particular note, we've got a complete run of Jazz Review (1958-1961), the monthly magazine started by Nat Hentoff, Hsio Wen Shih, and Martin Williams in New York, which features essays, articles, and reviews by Jazz musicians as well as by other notables such as LeRoi Jones and Harvey Pekar. We've also got pristine issues of CODA, the Canadian publication that featured less-mainstream artists than Down Beat (we've got Down Beat too from the late 1940s through the 1970s). Check out the complete volumes of Jazz Journal, which was like a British version of Down Beat that focused mainly on Blues and Jazz musicians. These are fascinating artifacts as they feature rarely seen photos of American musicians taken on tour in the UK and Europe, plus articles and photography by Paul Oliver and Valerie Wilmer, among others.

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with The Arcs

The Arcs What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

"For some reason it was difficult to get twelve people from Thailand to open for us for nothing," says The Arcs' singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach about Khun Narin Electric Phin Band. Apparently Auerbach was hoping to get the Thai psychedelic ensemble, who makes their own instruments, on board as an opening act to no avail. You may already know Auerbach from his other band The Black Keys, or from his 2009 solo record, Keep It Hid. Along with fellow Arcs members Leon Michels (Menahan Street Band), Nick Movshon (Menahan Street Band), Homer Steinweiss (Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings), and Richard Swift (The Shins), he's had a very busy year touring in support of their debut album, Yours, Dreamily. Avid record collectors themselves, The Arcs recently mined Amoeba Hollywood's varied genre sections and came out with an impressive and healthy score.

Buy Nick Cave's "Skeleton Tree" at Film Screenings in Hollywood & Berkeley on 9/8

Posted by Amoebite, August 28, 2016 06:33pm | Post a Comment

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' 16th studio album, Skeleton Tree, will be released globally on Friday, Nick Cave, Skeleton TreeSeptember 9th, but the first opportunity anyone will have to hear songs from the album will be while watching One More Time With Feeling, a film directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly), on Thursday, September 8th.

Amoeba Music will be at two screenings of One More Time With Feeling on September 8th selling the album early! Attendees can purchase Skeleton Tree after the film lets out. Catch One More Time With Feeling and get Skeleton Tree on September 8th in Berkeley at Rialto Cinemas® Elmwood (2966 College Avenue) and in Hollywood with director Q&A to follow at The Egyptian Theater (sold out).

One More Time With Feeling evolved from a performance-based concept into something more complex as Dominik delved into the background of the writing and recording of Skeleton Tree. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s intermittent narration and improvised rumination. The result is stark, fragile, and raw, and a true testament to an artist searching for his way through the darkness.

5 New Disney Soundtrack Picture Disc LPs Just Released

Disney Soundtrack Picture Discs

A wave of limited edition Disney picture discs just hit our shelves, all of which feature gorgeous artwork, resealable plastic display sleeves, and 180-gram vinyl. While the soundtracks to the earlier films were available on vinyl on their initial release, for many fans this will be the first chance to cop a crisp, new vinyl copy. This is especially great news for fans of the '90s films, which received European or Japanese vinyl pressings but weren't released on vinyl in the U.S. Until this recent reissue campaign, Disney connoisseurs had to choose between low-quality bootlegs or ultra rare, collector-priced LPs.

Here's what makes each release special:

Aladdin

Songs from Aladdin

Originally released in 1992, for many years the music from Aladdin was a rarity on vinyl. The picture disc features "A Whole New World," the only Disney song to win a GRAMMY for Song of the Year. The original soundtrack album was one of the best-selling animated film soundtracks of all time.

Watch the New Green Room Session with Eliot Sumner

Eliot Sumner Amoeba Green Room Session

London-born singer and multi-instrumentalist Eliot Sumner dropped by Amoeba Hollywood to play a few tracks off her excellent new album, Information. The band was in top form as they performed a mixture of driving post-punk and atmospheric dream-pop with taught electricity. There are echoes of her father, rock legend Sting, in Sumner's vocals and bass playing, but she undoubtedly has a voice of her own, and a great band playing with her.

With the mysterious, simmering intro on the first song, "After Dark," Sumner's vocals take command, leading the band into the ethereal groove of the chorus. Second is "Firewood" with its electronic backbone up front and center. The anthemic "Come Friday" is next up, a driving song that'll make you want to hop in your car and take a night drive. The band closes with the dirty, riff-y "Halfway to Hell," melding Black Sabbath sludge with '80s synths.

Eliot Sumner will be playing selected dates in the U.S. this Fall, including a set at Austin City Limits Music Festival on September 30. Alas, she doesn't have an LA date scheduled as of now, so this performance will have to tide you over for a while.

DREAM Day 2016 Attracted Aerosol Art Fans Of All Ages, & Further Fueled Legacy of Legendary Late West Coast Street Art Pioneer

Posted by Billyjam, August 25, 2016 10:45pm | Post a Comment

It may be sixteen and half years since the death of Mike "DREAM" Francisco, but the dream and legacy of this widely beloved pioneering East Bay artist/activist is more alive than ever. This fact was made abundantly clear at last Saturday's DREAM Day 2016 at the Greenpeace Yards in West Oakland.

Organized by friends and family, notably DJ Willie Maze and DREAM's brother Lil' John Francisco, the annual heartfelt homage to DREAM celebrates the life and legacy of the Bay Area aerosol art pioneer who has become a bona fide Bay Area legend.  That most refer to him as "King DREAM" demonstrates just how revered he is by so many today.

DREAM was equally artist and activist.  A pioneering figure in Bay Area graffiti history, DREAM was first and foremost a down-to-earth, real good person. He was instantly likable, always sharing and giving props to others, never ungrateful, but readily displaying his passion for hip-hop in all its elements, and for justice in his community. If DREAM were alive today he would be active in Oakland in the fight against injustices.  Back in the summer of 1992, DREAM and Plan B (murdered a month later) were at a Spice-1 video shoot where they painted a big "NO JUSTICE NO PEACE" piece for the East Bay rapper's Jive Records single "Welcome To The Ghetto." The following year DREAM, with other artists, continued the theme via the "No Justice No Peace" art exhibit at the Pro Arts Gallery in Downtown Oakland. The message of that 1993 Oakland art exhibit titled "No Justice No Peace" exhibit? "The problems that go on in our community, as far as East Oakland and any other ghetto out there. You deal with police brutality. You deal with the oppression by the city and by the government. You deal with that all the time," said DREAM in an interview with Melinda Bell at the time.

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with Sebastian Bach

Posted by Amoebite, August 23, 2016 04:44pm | Post a Comment

Sebastian Bach What's In My Bag at Amoeba Hollywood

KISS super fan, heavy metal legend, and vinyl collector Sebastian Bach recently came shopping at his happy place (i.e. Amoeba Hollywood) and schooled us on things like first pressings and Japanese "obi" editions of the band's discography. "The very first pressing of KISS Alive! was mastered by a guy named Robert Ludwig, and you can only tell if you look at the run-out in the grooves. It's the only one I don't have," says Bach as he opens one in the KISS vinyl section. Turns out Mr. Bach's expertise extends to many other artists, including Rush and Neil Young. This lesson was courtesy of a very personal, whirlwind tour of Bach's typical shopping route here at Amoeba and, boy, it did not disappoint!

Sebastian Bach 18 and Life on Skid Row

Sebastian Bach rose to prominence as the frontman of Skid Row. He performed with the group from 1987-1996, later forming the group The Last Hard Men with members of The Smashing Pumpkins, The Frogs, and The Breeders. In 1999 Bach released his first solo live LP, Bring 'Em Bach Alive! A year later he began performing in Broadway shows, making his debut in Jekyll & Hyde and later signing on for The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jesus Christ Superstar. He also played a recurring role on Gilmore Girls, appeared on Trailer Park Boys, and voiced a character on SpongeBob SquarePants.

Toots Thielemans [1923 - 2016]

Posted by Billyjam, August 22, 2016 08:00pm | Post a Comment

Earlier today 94 year old jazz harmonica artist Toots Thielmans died. Reportedly the Belgian born passed peacefully in his Belgian hospital bed where he'd been since last month with a shoulder injury following a fall. "Toots" was born Jean-Baptiste Frederic Isidore Thielemans in 1923 in Belgium. He arrived in America in 1952  joining Charlie Parker's All Star band. In the years since he would collaborate with such artists as Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Quincy Jones called Toots Thielemans "one of the greatest musicians of our time."

To many Toots will forever be remembered as the harmonica player on his Sesame Street theme (audio below). There is much more including such scores as "Midnight Cowboy," "Sugarland Express," and ''The Getaway," A passionate lifelong musician he was performing up until just a couple of years ago. The aptly named Toots 90 video below of him & ensemble doing John Barry's "Midnight Cowboy" is from only four years ago when he was already 90 years of age. Next month in the Belgium town of La `Hulpe, that he grew up in, a jazz festival in his name has been long planned.

DREAM DAY 2016: Celebrating Life & Legacy of Mike "DREAM" Francisco [1969 - 2000]

Posted by Billyjam, August 19, 2016 03:10pm | Post a Comment

It is now sixteen and a half years since internationally revered, pioneering Bay Area street artist Mike "DREAM" Francisco was senselessly murdered in Oakland CA. But both the positive influence and the iconic status of the beloved artist/activist & integral part of Bay Area hip-hop history from the 80's up until his death in February 2000, has grown substantially in the years since. This is thanks in part to his family and friends keeping his legacy alive via such things as the annual DREAM DAY celebrations that have taken place every year since his tragic death. DREAM would have celebrated his 47th birthday this week. These annual tributes to DREAM have taken place thanks to the tireless committed efforts (nearly two decades later) of such dedicated folks as Mike's brother John Francisco, and DJ WillieMaze of the longtime Local1200 turntable crew.  In fact WillieMaze was the one instrumental in accomplishing in getting the DreamDay Proclamation passed through the City of Oakland. Following him investing his time and patience wading through all the red tape, finally six years ago, the City of Oakland officially proclaimed every February 17th "Dream Day."  That bittersweet date is when DREAM was murdered in Oakland back in 2000 during a random armed robbery on San Pablo Ave. A few years ago OPD solved DREAM's murder when they arrested two guys from West Oakland (both were pretty young at the time of the crime) who are each currently serving 25-to-life sentences in prison.

Mackned Seeks to Conquer Beyond the Digital Sphere with his Debut Album "Born Rich"

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, August 18, 2016 08:18pm | Post a Comment

Mackned-- By doubleay

Seattle-based artist Mackned has been making waves in the digital realm of underground hip-hop for several years and is now looking to extend his reach with the release of his debut album, Born Rich. The duality of Mackned’s rapping and vocal capabilities have garnered his digital releases tens of thousands of views, generating a ton of buzz in the underground scene. The multifaceted artist’s dynamic vocals and songwriting skills present a substantial depth to his music that is often not heard in other artists’ works in underground rap music. A talent to be reckoned with, Mackned typically has his hands on all aspects of his music. Whether writing, rapping, singing, or producing, he’s constantly working to create. Both his countless solo releases and stand out collaborations with his Thraxxhouse group have driven him to connect with reputable rappers along the likes of Chief Keef, Larry June, and Nacho Picasso, and producers Ryan Hemsworth and Tommy Kruise. After making a name for himself in the digital underground, Mackned seeks to conquer beyond with his album debut. To find out more about Born Rich and the man behind the project, I interviewed Mackned.

Amoeblog: Tell me about your debut album, Born Rich. Who were you working with and where were you recording?

Mackned: Well, I was working with Flavr Blue. I had a lot of homies in the studio with me help writing and it was all just so organic. A lot of the album was recorded in NYC which made it brazy. Besides myself, my go-to engineer is Parker Joe who is one of the trio Flavr Blue. There were a couple features on there including my big homies up in Canada and some others. Keyboard Kid co-produced the track “Born Rich” on the album, which I thought was cool seeing how he’s in my group Thraxxhouse.

Mistah F.A.B. Salutes Mac Dre In Music Video Homage To Slain Bay Area Rap Icon: "Still Feelin' It"

Posted by Billyjam, August 17, 2016 11:45am | Post a Comment

Mistah F.A.B. has just published his new music video homage to Mac Dre, "Still Feelin' It" featured on the Oakland rap star's latest album Son of a Pimp 2 that arrived in Amoeba back in late May.  For the production of the heartfelt video homage to the iconic Vallejo rapper, who was killed in Kansas in 2004, his production crew set up cameras both by the big Mac Dre mural at Foothill near High St. in Oakland (one of several in the Bay), as well as during the June 11th Mac Dre Art Show in Oakland produced by local artist Street Bleach. Meanwhile much of the rest of the partly crowd-sourced music video  features an entertaining series of brief home-video clips of diehard Mac Dre fans enthusiastically dancing Thizz style and throwing up the trademark T sign in tribute to the so-called Thizzard of Oz.. "I made a PSA and asked for small clips of Mac Dre fans dancing to the song, and the response was overwhelming," explained Mistah F.A.B. of how these fan parts of the video production evolved. That overwhelming response confirmed what F.A.B. already knew about the love that Mac Dre continues to command with rap fans everywhere.

"[It's] a real testament to his lasting legacy and the love people still have for him. Everyone surrounding him could relate to him. He was a voice of the underworld, but also incredibly charismatic and an energy of fun," said Mistah F.A.B. whose rise to fame during the Bay Area's bygone Hyphy Movement can be attributed in great part to Mac Dre who spearheaded the regional rap musical movement.  The 2016 Mistah F.A.B. song "Still Feelin' It" (video below) is a play on the 2004 Mac Dre hit single "Feelin' Myself" (found on the album Ronald Dregan For President 2004: Dreganomics). The Mistah F.A.B. track is brimming with Mac Dre cross references such as "I'm still tryin' to find out, who's Nancy Von Chillinwich?!" "Still Feelin' It" is just one of 21 tracks on the latest, long overdue Mistah F.A.B. star-studded, album Son of a Pimp 2 whose long list of impressive collaborators (local and national) includes Kendrick Lamar, E-40, G-Eazy, Too $hort, ScHoolboy Q, and Bun B.

January 2000 Amoeba Music Magazine Ad Harks Back to A Different Time

Posted by Billyjam, August 16, 2016 10:20pm | Post a Comment

Sixteen and a half years ago the above Amoeba Music magazine print ad was published, right at the beginning of the new century. In one respect it's not long ago but in another it is a whole other time period in many ways. Hence this ad is a historic capsule that captures a bygone era in terms of the music industry, technology and Amoeba Music itself. This was still almost two full years before the Hollywood Amoeba Music store would open in November 2001 (see pic left).

It was also before this Amoeba Music website, that you are currently reading, became an important entity and integral part of Amoeba's distribution of music and information. Telling is that the Amoeba ad does not even include a URL web address, just street addresses and phone numbers. Noticeable also is that the ad was for CDs only. In the relatively short time since then vinyl has undergone a real resurgence while CDs have dropped in popularity with music collectors.

Prepared in the final weeks of 1999, it appeared in the January 2000 issue of Flyer SF which like so many print publications, once staples of the music industry, is long gone.  The ad filled the fold-out center pages of the pocketbook size zine that specialized in San Francisco club listings and reviews of related music. The print ad promoted an Amoeba in-store sale of various hip-hop and beat driven music by Jazzanova, Dieselboy, DJ Kicks, Blackalicious and also various artists on the Quannum and Solesides compilations that included DJ Shadow, Lateef the Truth Speaker, and Lyrics Born.

Joel Selvin Discusses Altamont at Book Passage Corte Madera, August 18

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, August 15, 2016 07:14pm | Post a Comment

Altamont, Joel SelvinOn Thursday, August 18th, rock journalist Joel Selvin discusses his new book Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day at Book Passage Corte Madera (51 Tamal Vista Blvd., Corte Madera, CA) at 7:00pm.

Selvin's cultural history tells the definitive story of The Rolling Stones’ infamous Altamont concert with exclusive and never-before revealed details. The Altamont Speedway Free Festival, held on December 6, 1969, has long been seen as the distorted twin of Woodstock—the day that shattered the Sixties’ promise of peace and love when a concertgoer was killed by a member of the Hells Angels, the biker club hired as security. While most people know of the events from the film Gimme Shelter, the whole story has remained buried in varied accounts, rumor, and myth...until now.

The product of 20 years of exhaustive research and dozens of interviews with many key players, including medical staff, Hells Angels members, the stage crew, and the musicians who were there, and featuring 16 pages of color photos, Altamont is the ultimate account of the final event in rock’s formative and most turbulent decade.

City and Colour Dallas Green What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

You know those groups you listen to and you think to yourself, "I wish I was in that band." Well, Godspeed You! Black Emperor is one of those bands for City & Colour's Dallas Green. "It's so good," he says holding up their latest LP, Asunder, Sweet and Other Distresses, "and they're such a cool band." Green was at Amoeba Hollywood recently and took us with him as he shopped for records and books, including albums by some of his all-time favorites.

City and Colour - If I Should Go Before You - Amoeba MusicCity & Colour is the folk project of Canadian indie musician Dallas Green. After stints with the bands Alexisonfire and Helicon Blue, Green began releasing City & Colour tracks online in 2005. Those tracks would become his debut, Sometimes, which was reissued in physical format for the first time by Vagrant Records in 2009. His follow-up, 2008's Bring Me Your Love, found Green moving in a more folk-inflected direction than before, as well as opening for Tegan & Sara and Girl In A Coma. City & Colour's first US headlining tour came two years later, when Green hit the road once again to promote Bring Me Your Love. He also toured the UK, supporting Pink and Butch Walker.

15 Years Later, Prestigious DJ Battle Returns to Bay Area with 2016 DMC USA DJ Finals August 28th at New Parish

Like an annual reminder that summer is winding down in New York City, traditionally at the end of August the US DMC Finals has been routinely taking place in the city that is the birthplace of the hip-hop DJ and hip-hop itself. That's where on the last weekend of August, DJs from across the US, who won their respective DMC regional battles, have been converging [at Webster Hall the past number of years] to fight it out on the ones and twos in this premiere battle DJ event. But this year will be different when the
DMC US Finals will be taking place outside New York City and on the opposite coast in Oakland, CA. There on Sunday August 28th at 5pm at the New Parish the 2016 DMC USA DJ Finals will be held. The prestigious battle will determine which DJ will go on to rep the USA in the 2016 DMC World Finals over in London a month later. This year's World Finals take place on Saturday September 24th at The Forum in Kentish Town where San Francisco's reunited Invisibl Skratch Piklz (Qbert, Shortkut, D-Styles) doing a headlining showcase set.

The Roots 1994 DGC publicity photo by T. Eric Monroe was to promote the Philly crew's first album for Geffen Do You Want More?!!!??! released in Jan 1995, and more recently reissued as 2LP vinyl version

Part 4 in the ongoing 1990's Promo Pics Amoeblog series, this installment includes press/publicity photos of The Roots, Ras Kass, Volume 10, Skee-Lo, Rodney O & Joe Cooley, Mack E.L., 12 Gauge, Cruseville Productions, U Know Who, and Terminator X and his various Godfathers Of Threatt collaborators for the Public Enemy member's solo project release Super Bad for RAL (Rush Associated Labels). That 1994 album's numerous contributors included Whodini, DJ Kool Herc, Fantastic Five, Joe Sinister, and the Cold Crush Brothers.  These mid-nineties hip-hop artist photos were sent out by record company press/publicity departments as well as some independent publicists working for the labels or artists. Mailed out to radio, television and print media outlets, they typically preceded album release dates by 4 to 8 weeks and were accompanied by a cassette or CD or vinyl advance copy of an artist's album or its lead-single such as with the Skee-Lo pic and bio.  The promo photos and music (plus videos in the case of TV stations) were accompanied by press releases and bios on the artists.

Recap: Brently Heilbron Hosted a Charity Auction for Inner-City Arts at Amoeba Hollywood

Posted by Amoebite, August 9, 2016 03:47pm | Post a Comment

Charity Auction with Brently Heilbron at Amoeba Hollywood

On Saturday, August 6th we were stoked for the return of Amoeba's prodigal son, Brently Heilbron - the original host of our charity auctions! He auctioned off a crazy array of concert tickets (Kraftwerk, Culture Club, Desert Daze Festival to name a few), plus collectibles, gift certificates from our amazing neighbors (Trader Joe's, Stella Barra & Urban Outfitters) and other things you never knew you had to have. As always, we matched all winning bids up to $1,000, which means we doubled the money going to benefit Inner-City Arts in downtown Los Angeles.

Brently Heilbron began performing stand up at the age of 14 and is the host and co-creator of the new PBS comedy series Stand Up Empire. We were so thrilled when he agreed to come back to host this auction 'cause he knows how to get it done! His quick wit and on-stage antics held the audience entranced while he heckled them into digging deeper into their pockets for a good cause. Jokes about....the portable CD player he was auctioning off ("CDs are gonna be cool again, mark my words!! And with this you can listen to your favorite Spin Doctors CD!!"). He brought chuckles and guffaws, and with his stream-of-consciousness commentary we got a small glimpse into his improv genius. While unfurling the giant Adele banner on the stage, we all-of-a-sudden felt the need to have her giant face on our living room wall! He was masterful and entertaining as always and we all felt good raising money for Inner-City Arts.

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with Gerd Janson

Posted by Amoebite, August 9, 2016 01:20pm | Post a Comment

Gerd Janson Amoeba Music What's In My Bag?

You can be sure that when German DJ, label founder, and record store owner Gerd Janson takes you record shopping he'll have some very informative bits of insight. "It's a promo," he says holding up a 12" single of The Quick's "One Night In A Blackout." "I think you can only find the long-mix on the promo release," Janson informs us before going on to state, "it says mid-tempo disco, but I would say it's a proper slow jam because it's even below 100 BPM." Janson had a lot to say about his record picks when he visited Amoeba Hollywood recently, and we were grateful to be able to listen.

Gerd Janson Fabric 89In 1998, after years spent in disco, house, and jungle clubs, Gerd Janson landed his first DJ residency at Cafe Kesselhaus in Darmstadt. These days he spins house and disco at Frankfurt club Robert Johnson's Liquid nights and travels the international DJ circuit. When he's not DJing, Janson can be found manning the record counter at his hometown store, Pentagon Recordstore, working at the Red Bull Music Academy or writing about music news for Spex or Groove magazine. He is co-owner of the Running Back record label.

This summer, Gerd Janson is DJing at parties from London to Ibiza before playing select dates in the U.S. He's a scheduled performer at this year's FYF Festival in Los Angeles. His latest release is a mix for the Fabric series, Fabric 89, due out August 19, 2016.

Janson holds up a 12" of "Visions Of China" by the UK band Japan. Were they prog rock, new wave or somewhere in between? Either way, he points out that at the time "they were kind of treated as wannabe intellectuals." Being a fan of "drums and sound effects," Janson grabbed Drums of the Caribbean: A Study in High Fidelity Sound, a collection of West Indies percussion. Also in his bag is Dept. of Sunshine's "Rude Boy/Space Tropics" single. "No one actually knows anything about them and this is the only record I've ever came across."

Amoeba Bay Area & Amoeba Hollywood Share Their Top 5 In-Stores of 2016 (So Far)

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, August 8, 2016 05:32pm | Post a Comment

We're a little past the half-way mark of 2016 already, so it seemed like a perfect time to reflect upon the fantastic in-store shows we've put on at all three of our Amoeba locations: San Francisco, Berkeley, and Hollywood. Each and every live performance we present at our stores is a unique and thrilling experience for the audience and staff, but some shows just have that extra bit of magic to make them stand out as our favorites. Enjoy our lists of top five in-store shows of 2016 (so far)!

Amoeba Bay Area: San Francisco & Berkeley

The Mystery Lights at Amoeba SF: July 31, 2016
Every so often we book a band right before or just as they explode onto the scene in a big way. Although The Mystery Lights has put out a couple of releases since 2009, the NY-by-way-of-Salinas, California band just released their self-titled debut on Daptone Records' new subsidiary Wick and it's gaining momentum. Their sound is sinister garage - the darker side of the '60s Nuggets, Pebbles, and Back From The Grave comps. Think the proto-punk of The Seeds, The Sonics, Jesters of Newport. Unlike many garage rock revivalists, The Mystery Lights don't just recreate the sound; these guys channel it spiritually, putting on a raucous show led by the howling, jumping, guitar-wielding Mike Brandon.

Local Natives Vinyl Gratification at Amoeba Hollywood

LA's own Local Natives are releasing their third album, Sunlit Youth, September 9th via Loma Vista, and they're the newest participants in the vinyl gratification program started by Spoon frontman Britt Daniel. Music fans have become accustomed to pre-ordering new albums digitally and getting instant access to a few new songs when they do. The concept for vinyl gratification was born out of wanting to give fans who pre-order from a physical record store a similar instant bonus.

Pre-order the Sunlit Youth LP in-store only at Amoeba Hollywood starting Tuesday, August 9th and receive a free 10" on the spot featuring three new tracks from the album and one exclusive song, "Lydon." (While supplies last. Limit 2 per person. In-store pre-orders only.)

Essential Records: Gene Vincent and The Blue Caps

Posted by Amoebite, August 8, 2016 03:58pm | Post a Comment

Gene Vincent and The Blue Caps - Amoeba Music

Call it a rough patch, call it a dry spell, call it whatever, but let's just say a while ago the relationship between my guitar and me got a little stale. Now of course I loved that thing dearly but, well, you know how it is: sometimes it just seems like the two of you are stuck in the same old routine. Now the electric guitar is a tricky instrument, there are so many variations, effects, and styles, and it's so overly saturated in the mainstream consciousness that while it can be the most primal and cathartic sounding of instruments, it can also be the most horrendous, self-involved sound known to modern man. At this particular juncture, I just wasn't hearing anything new that was compelling me towards the former sentiment. In an attempt to revive our relationship I pulled out this guitar magazine I had from high school that was all about rockabilly and the late '90s neo-swing revival. In it was a picture I always found striking but was never sure why: five young men all dressed in white, wearing dark, floppy caps. I thought to myself: it's finally time I really dug into Mr. Gene "Be-Bop-A-Lula" Vincent and His Blue Caps. I learned a couple of riffs out of the magazine, all attributed to Gene's original guitarist, Cliff Gallup, then I went to the record store and picked up their second album (thinking it was their first), Gene Vincent and The Blue Caps.

I put the needle on and right out of the gate the band is swaggering and in full swing. My toe's tappin', my hand's snappin' and my hair's getting greasier by the second. Gene finishes his first verse of "Red Bluejeans and a Ponytail" with the order to his band to "Rock!" and the next thing I know Cliff Gallup's guitar struts onto the scene and picks up the lead while someone lets out a banshee wail in the background. Gene comes back into the second verse, singing like he's crooning and panting at the same time, a cross between Dean Martin and that cartoon wolf from the droopy cartoons whose mouth drops to the floor at the sight of the cute redhead, and before I can finish that thought the second verse is ending and Gene calls out, "Rock again!" and Cliff's back with his plunky, shimmering, echo-y tone.

Bay Area Hip-Hop Artist L-Love Gives Back To His Community With School Backpack Drive

Posted by Billyjam, August 8, 2016 12:38pm | Post a Comment
In these current divisive times of selfish hate-fueled political rhetoric on a national level, it's refreshing to hear selfless, community-caring stories on a grassroots level.  Longtime Bay Area hip-hop artist L-Love's "Backpack Drive" is such a story. "People are in need [and] I just feel in my spirit that I have been called to action," said the underground artist born Les Mixon.

Mixon's recently set up Go Fund Me: Backpack Drive is, as its name might imply, a fundraiser to purchase backpacks for underprivileged school kids. Now as the school summer holidays near their end, low income parents are faced with often insurmountable back to school expenses. "I'm doing this drive to purchase backpacks and school supplies for kids whose parents can't afford them," said Mixon of the project that is similar to one that another East Bay artist, Oakland rapper Mistah F.A.B., did a couple of years ago in his community. Like F.A.B.'s direct community action, Mixon too didn't want to just talk about helping out his community. He wanted to do something concrete and to witness results.

"I have always believed in giving back. It is something that was instilled within me as a small child. My great grandfather and great grandmother really helped the community from Compton to San Bernardino. I watched their giving spirit and started helping people around my neighborhood at around 8 years old," Mixon told the Amoeblog this week. "I knew everyone in my neighborhood because I would help all of the elderly. If they needed groceries carried inside: I was doing it, if they needed someone to house sit and feed their animals when they were gone: I was doing it. It was a fire within. Selfless acts. No glory just doing what is right."  Just as Mixon's sense of responsibility for his community and willingness to do good deeds for others was handed down from his family elders, he in turn has provided a positive influence on his own offspring. "My [8 year old] daughter and myself have been growing a garden every year since she was born and donating the vegetables to the homeless. We grow things that do not need to be cooked like tomatoes, green beans, celery, snap beans, and wax beans."

Young MC Forever Associated with His 1989 Pop Hit "Bust A Move"

Posted by Billyjam, August 6, 2016 04:18pm | Post a Comment

Despite his other accomplishments, including writing hits for others, and the numerous other songs he's recorded, Young MC will forever be remembered for his global 1989 hit "Bust A Move." The single, that appeared on the British-born/US raised artist's debut album Stone Cold Rhymin as well on some compilations and soundtracks, was the artist's biggest hit: staying on the Billboard Top 100 chart for over nine months. It would go on to win Young MC the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance. However instead of being seen as one of the talented artist's many good compositions and recordings, the hugely popular record would rank him among the dreaded "one-hit wonder" category.

Of Jamaican heritage, Marvin Young was born in the Wimbledon suburb of South West London, England.  With family relocating across the pond to the USA, he would be raised for much of his life in the Queens borough of New York City. A good student, he first graduated Manhattan's Hunter College before enrolling across the country at the University of Southern California. At USC Young earned a bachelors degree in economics. He also earned the friendship of two fellow students, Michael Ross and Matt Dike. Dike and Ross were the founders of their then fledgling Delicious Vinyl Records.  The pair would sign Young MC as their first artist. In return he helped put their upstart label on the rap map both as their first artist and as the creative force behind the record label's next artist,Tone Loc. Young MC co-wrote his raspy voiced label-mate's 1989 top-ten mega hit "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina." These moves would prompt many to later opine that Young had foolishly given away some of his best material.

Vinyl Reissues from Crowded House Out This Fall

Posted by Amoebite, August 6, 2016 03:00pm | Post a Comment

Crowded House Vinyl Reissues

From the mid-'80s to '90s, Melbourne rockers Crowded House achieved commercial success and critical acclaim for their unique fusion of pop rock songwriting and jangle pop/indie influences. Criminally overlooked in the US for many years, the band is receiving some long overdue attention thanks to a series of vinyl reissues by Capitol, out November 18, 2016. This is great news for fans who haven't had new vinyl versions of these old favorites since their initial release. Here's what you need to know about the new and improved LPs available now for pre-order.

Crowded House

Crowded House (1986)

Coming nearly thirty years after its initial release, Crowded House's debut has lost none of its power. The band's self-titled LP features some of their most well-known tracks, including "Don't Dream It's Over," "Something So Strong," "Mean to Me," and "World Where You Live." The album peaked at #1 in Australia, #3 in New Zealand, and #12 in the US.

Black Sabbath Limited Color Vinyl Reissues

Posted by Amoebite, August 5, 2016 11:40am | Post a Comment

Black Sabbath limited edition color vinyl reissues

Ever since they first burst onto the scene nearly fifty years ago, Black Sabbath's influence on music and culture has been prodigious. For a band with such a towering reputation, no ordinary reissue campaign will do; that's why we're super excited about the new limited edition 180 gram color vinyl reissues Rhino is releasing today. In addition to coming out on glorious rainbow-hued vinyl, the first eight studio albums from Ozzy and friends will feature the 2012 remastered audio, which had previously only been available in digital format. CD reissues featuring the 2012 remasters are also now available. Here's what to look out for:

Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath (1970)

It's hard to believe, but when Sabbath released their self-titled debut in 1970, critics panned it. Of course, the album has since gone on to rank highly in pretty much every roundup of Best Metal Albums and Greatest Albums of All Time. Rolling Stone charted Black Sabbath at #44 on their list of 100 Best Debut Albums of All Time, saying the title track "would define the sound of a thousand bands."

Tyler, The Creator's 2016 Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival to include ScHoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, Erykah Badu, Action Bronson, Death Grips

Posted by Billyjam, August 4, 2016 08:15pm | Post a Comment

Along with such other artist-curated music events as the Hierogplyics' annual Hiero Day, The Roots' Picnic, and Diplo's national touring Mad Decent Block Party, Tyler, The Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival proves that increasingly artists are taking further control of aspects of their careers. Once the domain of concert promoters, more and more artists have been producing or co-producing their own music festivals. MURS' sadly no longer, high-caliber indie hip-hop Paid Dues festival which, up until 2013, presented lovingly assembled hip-hop shows for the better part of a decade.

Although hard work even when these artists work in collaboration (such as Tyler the Creator whose teamed up with Goldenvoice), these artists are doing a damn good job presenting their own music festivals. Proof is evident in the line-up of artists, announced today, for the Odd Future star's 5th annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival taking place in LA in three months from now. Artists confirmed for this year's weekend long music event will include A$AP Rocky, ScHoolboy Q, Lil Wayne, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Erykah Badu, Chance the Rapper, Death Grips, Flatbush Zombies, DJ Mustard, TOKiMONSTA, Pretty Lights, Kehlani, The Internet, Domo Genesis and, of course, Tyler, The Creator himself.  Check the flyer above for some of other artists on the line-up, with more names to be announced later. Tix will go on sale Monday, August 8th, for the two-day event (Saturday/Sunday, November 12th and 13th) that will take place in Los Angeles at Exposition Park.

Cornelius' Fantasma gets Deluxe Vinyl Reissue and Full-Album Tour

Posted by Kelly S. Osato, August 2, 2016 10:46pm | Post a Comment
cornelius fantasma reissue deluxe vinyl us tour full album performance
Over the last few decades selector, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Keigo Oyamada has earned international renown for consistently dabbling in and dishing out albums bursting with busy layers of ingenious pop culture regurgitations and delightfully distorted experiments in sound and vision. Arguably the most enduring and timeless of these is Fantasma—the third solo album he created as Cornelius, released in the U.S. on the Matador label in September of 1997. Back then, it seemed that nigh on every bit of Japanese pop culture was perfectly hep in some way or another, and Matador was killing it in 1997 by pushing not only Fantasma, but also records from "world's loudest" garage rockin' power trio Guitar Wolf and Cornelius' fellow champions of Tokyo's Shibuya-kei pop scene Pizzicato Five, thus solidifying said (literally "Shibuya-style") 90s pop movement as "a thing" trending stateside.

Original Video from 1997 release of Cornelius Fantasma:

Nearly twenty years have flitted by, yet Fantasma sounds just as fresh as its first mic check. To attempt to describe its sound is to strap oneself into the ride once more, for the album plays like a carnival thrill ride of edits, commanding you to let go and let the whole thing take you from beginning to end, climbing up and careening over, under and through a myriad of genres, implements of music making, seemingly endless samples, bleep-bloops and obvious nods to movies like Planet of the Apes, Amadeus, and bands like The Beach Boys and My Bloody Valentine. And when the ride comes to a complete stop, there often remains a curious feeling of having been thrust through a familiar yet foreign fantasyland looking-glass. Perhaps that is the very definition of Fantasma.

Now In Its Fifth Year, Hiero Day 2016 (Sept 5th) Will Continue "Celebrating All That Is Good About Oakland"

Posted by Billyjam, August 2, 2016 06:51pm | Post a Comment
With just five weeks until  Hiero Day 2016 takes place on September 5th, tix are now on sale for the high caliber, homegrown Oakland hip-hop festival. The Hieroglyphics curated annual hip-hop festival always delivers a rich and diverse day of hip-hop music and culture. As yet the 2016 lineup has to be announced but, via a Hieros email blast this week, it was promised that, "This year's line up is incredible!" and to "stay tuned for the awesome line-up announcement."

Just five years old, Hiero Day has steadily grown and blossomed to become Oakland's best annual large scale cultural event. By consistently being a peaceful large scale hip-hop event in Oakland, it transcends every negative stereotypes associated with rap shows.

Hiero Day's positive vibe is fueled by a love of both hip-hop culture and the longtime collective's hometown.  It's slogan "Celebrating All That Is Good About Oakland" perfectly sums up the uplifting, all day, all ages event. There's always rows of interesting booths, as well as lots of food trucks spread across the few block area of the festival. There will be three performance stages providing non stop music and entertainment. It kicks off early too, by around noon when it tends to be gettin
g hot. Warning: the festival area is minus any shade, so best bring a hat or umbrella and drink lots of water. The main stage on 3rd always features a strong lineup of local and national acts including, of course, members of the extended Hiero crew. As to who will be there usually depends on who is on tour or in town that weekend. But true Hiero fans in the Bay likely already checked out one or both of the full collective's two recent concerts on their home turf: the packed to capacity Stern Grove in San Francisco set they headlined a month ago, plus the all star Hiero show two months ago in Berkeley at the UC Theatre.  That event featured sets from Del the Funky Homosapien, CasualSouls of Mischief (Opio, A-Plus, Phesto, and Tajai), Pep Love, Domino and DJ Toure.

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with Vince Staples

Vince Staples Amoeba Music What's In My Bag?

What did Long Beach rapper Vince Staples pick up when he recently went shopping at Amoeba Hollywood? Well, how about Joy Division's classic debut album, Unknown Pleasures, whose artwork inspired his latest album cover, Summertime '06. "A lot of people don't know that," he says, "but, you know, sometimes you gotta tell on yourself."

Vince Staples Summertime '06 Amoeba MusicVince Staples landed on the national stage after collaborations with Odd Future and Mac Miller. His career began with a series of mixtapes, including Stolen Youth, which featured guest performances by Mac Miller, Ab-Soul, and ScHoolboy Q; he also appeared on tracks by Earl Sweatshirt and Jhene Aiko. In 2014 Staples joined ScHoolboy Q on his Oxymoron tour and dropped his first official EP, Hell Can Wait.
