Def Jux Legend Mr. Lif Discusses His First Solo Album In Seven Years: "Don't Look Down" on Mello Music Group

Posted by Billyjam, June 30, 2016 08:45pm | Post a Comment

After a seven year span with no new Mr. Lif solo album, 2016 marked the triumphant return of the revered Boston emcee, who plays the Elbo Room in San Francisco July 7th, with the powerful album Don’t Look Down. The new ten track release's many guests include Del The Funky Homosapien and the group the artist born Jeffrey Haynes is a longtime member of, The Perceptionists. Released by Mello Music Group in CD, cassette, and vinyl formats, Don't Look Down finds the former Def Jux artist in top form and full of creative energy. As he says himself, he is more like a hungry young artist starting out than one who's been in the hip-hop game since the mid nineties. In short he is far from jaded. "I feel like I just started" not "the older guy" but "I feel brand new," he told me by phone recently. "For me, my career begins now," he stated. But that is not to say that he has been idle for the past seven years. Between  Don’t Look Down and his previous album, 2009's I Heard It Before, Mr. Lif has been busy, among other things, working on his home studio and performing and recording with Thievery Corporation. And a year ago he worked on the collaborative project Terra Bella with the Polish Ambassador and Ayla Nereo.

New Zion I Song "Tech $" Tackles Tech Fueled Gentrification of Oakland and the Bay Area

Posted by Billyjam, June 28, 2016 11:57pm | Post a Comment

In September Zion I will release the album the Labyrinth featuring the new preview track "Tech $"  (Anthony Cole directed music video below). "Tech $" is about the impact of gentrification in Oakland as a result of the Bay Area tech boom.  Zumbi has lived in the Bay Area since the nineties and has seen a lot of changes. In the ZIon I hit of a decade ago, "The Bay," he rapped of all the diverse things that made the Bay great on the anthem like track. The new song is not as uplifting.  On the post AmpLive, Mikos da Gawd produced track he recalls how, "In the nineties it was the dot com" but now it is full scale gentrification, an unavoidable scenario that's been noticed (and noted) by other Oakland hip-hoppers.

Prozack Turner
of Foreign Legion fame, who lives in East Oakland and runs the Oakland bar/club The Legionnaire Saloon on Telegraph Ave. near Grand Ave., addresses the topic of gentrification in the song "HIgh Enough." The brand new track, that features mic guest Brother Ali, is from a forthcoming solo album by the Oakland artist. Meanwhile another Oakland artist, Elujay, has themed his entire forthcoming album on the topic with the title Jentrify.

When Monsieur Perine go record shopping they don't just stick to one or two sections, they tear through the whole store. So when the Colombian trio came to Amoeba Hollywood recently they ended up with a huge and eclectic mix of music, which included everything from African percussive folk music, big band jazz, and Fleetwood Mac.

Monsieur Perine meld Django Reinhardt-style swing, Latin-American music, and jazz to create what they call "swing Colombian style." They took home the Latin GRAMMY for Best New Artist in 2015. Honoring The Late Musical Great, Pioneering Funk Keyboardist Bernie Worrell (1944 - 2016)

Posted by Billyjam, June 24, 2016 07:30pm | Post a Comment

As if 2016 cannot bring any more sad news of musical greats passing, this afternoon confirmed reports began circulating that influential keyboardist/musical great Bernie Worrell (Parliament-Funkadelic, Talking Heads etc.) died at noon today from stage four lung cancer at age 72. Both master and pioneer of the Moog synthesizer and the Minimoog, the New Jersey born George Clinton collaborator, who relocated with Clinton and The Parliaments to Detroit in the 70's, was the backbone of Clinton's various named/themed ensembles. But it was namely the trailblazing Parliament-Funkadelic funk / soul / rock ensemble that garnered Worrell (aka Dr. Woo) the most attention initially. Among his many fans were the members of Talking Heads who invited him to join them in the early 80's as a side project to his P-Funk gig. This he did and continued to do throughout that decade. As a member of both P-Funk and Talking Heads,  Worrell was inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 1997 and 2002 respectively. In addition to P-Funk and Talking Heads and the dozen solo albums he released over the years including 1978's All The Woo In The World and 1990's Funk of Ages, Worrell collaborated with numerous other artists including Fela Kuti, Jack Bruce, Steve Jordan, Buckethead, and Les Claypool. Just recently the vinyl version of the 2016 career look-back, Retrospectives on Purple Woo, arrived in Amoeba following the CD version. Worrell, who was featured in last year's movie Ricki and The Flash  as member of Meryl Streep’s band in the 2015 film, performed with Clinton and P-Funk as recently as two months ago. See footage below along with a series of other tracks/concert pieces featuring the musical great.
Rest in peace "The Wizard of Woo" Bernie Worrell.

of Montreal's Fall 2016 US Tour, in support of band's fourteenth album "Innocence Reaches," To Include Three California Dates

Posted by Billyjam, June 22, 2016 08:50pm | Post a Comment

of Montreal today announced the dates for their Fall 2016 US tour that will include three California dates in late October. The tour will be in support the group's recently announced, forthcoming album Innocence Reaches. That album, that features such tracks as "It's Different For Girls" (audio preview below), is scheduled to arrive in Amoeba on August 12th in CD and vinyl formats via the Athens, GA group's longtime label Polyvinyl. Last month the label released the group's double-A sided 7" single "Chinese Rocks" / "Either Way I Lose."  And last year Polyvinyl released of Montreal's Aureate Gloom (also in LP) in March. Then in April 2015, for Record Store Day, they unleashed the vinyl release of Snare Lustrous Doomings. Six months later in October they again released Snare Lustrous Doomings on CD and on LP formats in wider release numbers.

In
nocence Reaches will be the fourteenth album from the Kevin Barnes band of two full decades and can be filed under such categories as contemporary electronica, indie pop, and EDM. As for how the album differs from other ones by his group, said Barnes: "I got into this bubble of only being in some other time period. I came up picking apart the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and symphonic pieces. But last year, I was hearing Jack Ü, Chairlift, Arca, and others, thinking about low end and sound collage. It was an extra layer to geek out on."

Donation Jugs for Orlando at Amoeba Hollywood

On June 12, 2016 the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history took place at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. A pain that has been felt around the world lingers in all of  us as we attempt to take the next steps to move towards healing and the hope that nonsensical, cowardly acts will someday cease to exist.

Amoeba will be collecting donations in our Hollywood location so that we may match them, and pass along a little something to help those in need. Swing by and leave your leftover change from a purchase, or as much as you can spare, and we'll donate it to The Center, which serves the LGBT communities in Orlando.

More Love. Less Hate.

Double Whammy: The Life & Death of Lonnie Mack

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, June 20, 2016 06:04pm | Post a Comment

Lonnie Mack-- By Brett Stillo

Rock & Roll guitarist Lonnie Mack died the same day as Prince. Call it fate, call it show business... whatever, but the death of a big name celebrity will always overshadow the death of a lesser name. C.S. Lewis, Aldous Huxley, Farrah Fawcett, or Groucho Marx all were pushed to the back pages as well.

Lonnie Mack and Prince share a connection beyond a date in an obituary. Both of them played the electric guitar like proverbial bats out of hell. They were players among players with a command of the instrument beyond mere technique. Indeed, their fingers seemed electric, boosting the sound and texture of their guitar solos to stratospheric levels.

Mack, born in 1941, was a first generation Rock and Roller -- part of an echelon of pioneer guitar heroes of the early 1960s that included Duane Eddy, Dick Dale, and Link Wray. Among his peers, however, Mack was ahead of the curve with a cutting-edge guitar style born from the formative sounds of Blues, Gospel, and Bluegrass. Mack took these traditional elements and supercharged them to create a raw, electrifying sound that screamed from his trademark Gibson Flying V, “Number 7” (the seventh model to come out of the factory in the Flying V’s original run in 1958).

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with Duran Duran

Duran Duran What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

"I realize what a pleasure it is going through racks, and actually finding things. That reminds me of my childhood, but also of times, not quite so far away, when you had that choice," says Nick Rhodes, keyboardist and founding member of Duran Duran, about shopping for DVDs at Amoeba Hollywood. Amoeba hosted a signing with the legendary band for the release of their latest album, Paper Gods, and we got a chance to meet up with the band after they went hunting for music and movies.

Duran Duran are one of the quintessential bands to emerge from England's new wave/synth pop scene in the 1980s. Formed in 1978 by keyboardist Nick Rhodes and bassist John Taylor, over time the lineup solidified to include drummer Roger Taylor, frontman Simon Le Bon, and guitarist Andy Taylor. Initially inspired by post-punk and art school ideas and aligned early on with the New Romantic scene, Duran Duran quickly became superstars on the strength of their innovative music videos, fashion-forward image, and impressive number of chart-topping singles.

Duran Duran Paper Gods Amoeba MusicThe band's career took off with the release of their 1981 self-titled debut, which reached number 3 on the UK charts. Success in the US came shortly thereafter, when Duran Duran's sophomore LP, Rioclocked in at number 6 on the Billboard 200. The band's string of successes continued with 1983's Seven and the Ragged Tiger and 1986's Notorious, with the band touring the globe and being feted as teen heartthrobs. By 1993, Duran Duran was back at the top of the charts, thanks to the release of a second self-titled album, dubbed The Wedding Album to differentiate it from the band's debut. Duran Duran continue to release new albums and will be touring the US this summer, including a stop in San Francisco for Outside Lands.

REM Vinyl Reissues

This summer the mighty R.E.M. are reissuing three of their landmark releases for I.R.S. Records, as well as their major label debut, Green. These albums showcase an interesting point in the band's history, when Michael Stipe and co.'s reputation among indie and college radio circles was translating into more commercial success. Coming courtesy of Capitol Records/Universal Music, the vinyl reissues of Life's Rich Pageant, Dead Letter Office, Eponymous (all out 7/29) and Green (out 8/26) will keep their original artwork.

From the Club to the Shelves, Antwon’s "Double Ecstasy" EP Is Now Available Vinyl & Cassette

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, June 20, 2016 02:20pm | Post a Comment

Antwon, Double Ecstasy-- By doubleay

Antwon’s Double Ecstasy EP is the merging of an artist’s influence, style, and sound, cohesively culminating into a formula for success. Antwon’s roots lie in San Jose’s punk scene, and his tone and delivery are reminiscent of Hip-hops’s big bodies like that of Biggie Smalls, but his music is completely original. Since first coming onto the scene in 2011 with projects My Westside Horizon and Fantasy Beds, Antwon has undoubtedly never released anything subpar. Over the past five years he has indulged in new frontiers via intercontinental touring and connecting with artists at different platforms such as Lil Ugly Mane, Wiki of Ratking, and producer Hot Sugar, all while improving his craft. These experiences and connections have allowed him to develop a wider source of content to draw from in his music.

The video for Antwon’s break-in record “Helicopter,” from his 2011 Fantasy Beds Mixtape:

It seems many long and wild evenings in Europe’s night clubs have influenced Antwon on Double Ecstasy, both in terms of lifestyle as well as production. The EP displays rap music’s familiar turn up content but in a scene foreign to the average American rapper. Several times he cites accounts of partying, debauchery with females, and drug use in European clubs, which express and reflect his recent lifestyle. Meanwhile, the progressively drilling 808’s, almost more comparable to electronic dance music than Hip-hop, shape the upbeat yet atmospheric sound of the album (“Club,” “Luv”). Ignorant, fun, and accurate, Antwon is really rapping how he’s living on Double Ecstasy.

Rest in Peace to Prince Be of P.M. Dawn

Posted by Billyjam, June 17, 2016 10:17pm | Post a Comment

Attrell Cordes, the 46 year old artist better known as Prince Be (or sometimes Prince Be the Nocturnal) from the 90's hip-hop crossover act P.M. Dawn, has died according to the group's Facebook page and website, as well as other confirmed reports. "With profound sadness the driving force of P.M. Dawn, Attrell Cordes 'Prince Be' has passed ... Cordes passed Friday of renal kidney disease from diabetes at a hospital in his home state of New Jersey," a statement on the group's website posted earlier today, June 17th, 2016.

Formed with his brother Jarett Cordes (aka DJ Minutemix), Attrell was one half of Jersey City, NJ founded group who will be best remembered for their Spandau Ballet (plus more) sampling, number one pop hit "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” (12" cover art left, music video below) off their 1991 album Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience. With hip-hop fans though, P.M. Dawn will always be rembered for their run-in with KRS-One who, with his crew, famously bum-rushed one of their concerts, forcing them offstage and then taking over the show to perform Boogie Down Production songs.

1st Annual Community Indie Fest (July 3) To Provide Community with Vehicle For Change Say Organizers Mic-T & DJ True Justice

Posted by Billyjam, June 17, 2016 09:24pm | Post a Comment

Embracing the current renaissance of conscious hip-hop music and culture being used a positive tool for change, particularly in the Bay Area, will be the 1st Annual Community Indie Fest on July 3rd at West Oakland's One Fam Community Event Center. The two main organizers behind the all-day, all ages, all encompassing cultural event are DJ True Justice and emcee Mic-T who say that their main goal is to provide their community with a vehicle for change through a positive gathering. As outlined in their mission statement for the eleven hour, two stage event: "From the #Frisco5 to the Black Lives Matter movement, it is evident that the indie hip-hop community from the 90's have grown to be mothers, fathers, and some even grandparents. It is their children who are in danger of police brutality, black on black crime, and drug abuse. Now more than ever we are using our influence as artists, community figures, and just everyday people to organize vehicles of change."

The 1st Annual Community Unity Indie Fest will encompass "art, culture, culinary greatness, and the great unifier-music" promise the two longtime respected Bay Area hip-hop artists who will be among the many performers on the day. Others include Paris, Equipto, Mystik Journeymen, Scarub, Myka 9, Rifleman, Dub Esquire, Sinestro Enigma, Vocab Slick, and the "Bay Area's finest DJ line up" featuring Ras Cue, DJ Ready, DJ D, Kevvy Kev, DJ Styles, DJ Squareopolis, plus DJ J-Cutt from legendary Oakland act APG Crew.. Vinyl Reissues from Dead Can Dance Coming in July

Dead Can Dance Vinyl Reissues

Dead Can Dance are in the midst of reissuing their entire back catalog on vinyl, with the first three installments coming this July. Their longtime label 4AD is kicking things off with represses of the group's 1984 self-tilted debut, their sophomore album Spleen & Ideal, and their sixth album, Into the Labyrinth. Founded in Melbourne and featuring the core duo of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, the idiosyncratic Dead Can Dance quickly became 4AD's best-selling act, with a truly unique sound that takes reference points from medieval and world music, as well as goth rock and post-punk. Pre-orders are available now, with a July 8 release date set.

Dead Can Dance

Dead Can Dance

The band's self-titled debut LP placed them alongside their contemporaries in the UK post-punk scene, with comparisons drawn to labelmates Cocteau Twins, as well as The Cure. Sans the more worldbeat-oriented sound with which the group would soon become synonymous, Dead Can Dance's debut features a more sparse, dark sound and is unlike anything else in their oeuvre.

Three Essential Melvins LPs To Be Reissued June 24

Posted by Amoebite, June 15, 2016 03:08pm | Post a Comment

Melvins Vinyl Reissues

When the Melvins burst onto the Washington music scene in the early '80s, they were making music heavier, slower, and sludgier than anyone else had before. The impact made by key members Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover cannot be understated; Melvins' uncompromising sound influenced many of the now legendary Seattle grunge bands (Nirvana were huge fans and supporters) and much of the existing canon of stoner rock/sludge/doom bands, including Boris, Sunn O))), and Earth. In fact, after a string of indie releases, it's in large part due to interest in the Seattle scene that Melvins was picked up by major label Atlantic Records in 1993 -- a partnership that would lead to the release of three of the band's classic albums, Houdini, Stag and Stoner Witch. Oddly, considering their importance, all three LPs have been out of print on vinyl for over two decades.

But no more! Jack White's Third Man Records is reissuing each album on 180-gram vinyl with gatefold sleeves. Pre-orders are available now from us (and they'll ship FREE to the U.S.), with the LPs set for a June 24 release. Here's what to look out for on each album.

Ice Cube + N.W.A's MC Ren & DJ Yella To Co-Headline Treasure Island Music Fest (Oct 16/17) for Last Year on Island [+ Sigur Rós]

Posted by Billyjam, June 15, 2016 09:51am | Post a Comment

Looking like an almost N.W.A reunion (sans Dr. Dre and the late Eazy-E), Ice Cube "featuring"  MC Ren and DJ Yella at this October's Treasure Island Music Festival has been generating a buzz among hip-hop fans in the Bay Area since the lineup announcement yesterday. The tenth and final San Francisco Bay island located music festival on October 16 & 17, the festival will feature co-headliner Sigur Rós. Many rap fans have taken to social media to project their thoughts/hopes for the Cube & co. set. Some have suggested that the anticipated performance by the star rapper-turned-actor along with his two former N.W.A rap crew mates could result in an N.W.A reunion of sorts. All it would take would be to arrange for Dr. Dre to fly into town to join his former Compton rap crew and arrange for that hologram of Eazy-E that was premiered at Rock The Bells three years ago. See video below of that 2013 performance by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony featuring the life like hologram of the late Eazy-E plus Yella onstage.

Saul Williams What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music Hollywood

As you can imagine with someone as eclectic, talented and acclaimed as the American rapper, poet, writer, actor and musician, when Williams comes to Amoeba Hollywood, he's sure to pick up some interesting finds.

Essential Records: 'Electric Ladyland' by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Essential Records Electric Ladyland Jimi Hendrix

Somewhere between the murky, secluded sixth and seventh grades, I saw a TV spot for an upcoming magic special in which a then unknown young man performed a card trick straight towards the camera. Not only did he know what card I had seen in his deck but he changed another card into that same card right before my eyes. The young man's name was David Blaine, and the special was called Street Magic. By now we're probably all familiar with David Blaine, and his deadpan style of magic and physical feats, but something that people probably don't remember about his first couple of TV specials is how great the music was. Let me tell ya, it was really good. My oncoming obsession with the David Blaine specials (I recorded them live on VHS, and watched them over and over again) was also my introduction to Dr. John, Sly & The Family Stone, Innervisions-era Stevie Wonder, and, most importantly, Jimi Hendrix.

Sure, I had heard Hendrix before; I vaguely knew "Purple Haze" and "Foxey Lady," and I knew he was considered a legend; but it wasn't until I watched David Blaine walking out of a tunnel in New York City to the wah-wah-ed intro to "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" that I really heard Jimi Hendrix. Now I'm sure to those folks who were musically aware pre-Street Magic this introduction might not garner major record store cred, but to my twelve-year-old self, this combination of sound and image was monumentally cool.

New Hip-Hop Albums & Videos: Oddisee, Apathy, Craig G, Homeboy Sandman, Rob Kelly + Analog Brothers reissue

Posted by Billyjam, June 11, 2016 08:13pm | Post a Comment
Below is the Ryan Calavano directed music video for the new Oddisee track "Brea" from the artist's brand new album The Odd Tape that arrived into Amoeba this week in CD and vinyl versions: regular LP and  Deluxe LP. The 55 minute, twelve track album from the renowned Brooklyn based, Maryland hip-hop artist was released by Mello Music Group yesterday. A day earlier the video, that appears below along with other new videos, was published by director Calavano who described the Oddisee accompanying visual as a "tribute to the unseen soul......a companion piece to living."

This latest Oddisee album that's technically a mixtape comes from the multi-talented emcee and producer who is both a solo artist and member of the hip-hop trio Diamond District. It is his follow up to 2015's The Good Fight. Unlike that last album, The Odd Tape is an all instrumental outing. Also yesterday Mello Music released Oddisee's seven-track EP Alwasta that he had originally posted for free online a few months back.

Lucius Live at Amoeba Hollywood

Brooklyn indie pop band Lucius stopped by Amoeba Hollywood this past March for a performance featuring sweetly lilting harmonies, soulful country rock guitar and sparse, but effective percussion. Immediately recognizable by their ultra fashionable identical style, frontwomen Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig commanded the stage with a quiet intensity, letting their well-crafted melodies do the talking Lucius Good Grief Amoeba Musicwhile drummer Dan Molad kept time and guitar players Peter Lalish and Andrew Burri contributed some light Americana vibes.

The day after their set, the band's third full-length, Good Grief, came out via Mom + Pop Music, so this was an exciting moment for fans looking forward to new material. A rapt crowd gathered for doo wop-inspired set opener "Turn It Around" before the group slowed things down with the minimalist, moving "Go Home." Lucius closed out their set with "Dusty Trails," a low-key heartbreaker about lost chances and going home. Check out the full performance in the video below.

Skepta's "Konnichiwa"

Skepta, Konnichiwa-- By doubleay

As grime continues to blow up globally, Skepta seems to be comfortably sitting at the top of the game after the release of his fourth studio album, Konnichiwa. Although North America has been fairly aware of prominent UK MC’s like Wiley and Dizzy Rascal, the hard hitting, nitty gritty grime scene has been popping off in the UK since the early 2000’s. Ushered in by Skepta and his Boy Better Know crew, there has been a massive boom in North America for the sub-genre, almost coinciding with the 2014 release of Skepta’s “That’s Not Me (feat. JME)" single.

As North America finally began catching on to the UK’s hottest Hip-hop sound, Skepta did not slow down. From 2014 to the release of Konnichiwa (2016), singles like “That’s Not Me,” “Shutdown,” and “It Ain’t Safe (feat. A$AP Mob’s Young Lord)” all charted in the top 50’s on the UK singles chart, while simultaneously running up millions of SoundCloud plays. Through the great success of his recent music, his association with A$AP Rocky’s A$AP Mob, and a historical performance with Kanye West at the 2015 BRIT Awards, Hip-hop fans everywhere are Skepta’s for the taking.

Chuuwee-- By doubleay

Sacramento rapper Chuuwee has been smashing the underground scene for over seven years now and it's about time Hip-hop fans caught on. He is most known for his solo project South Sac Mack and his Amerikka’s Most Blunted (AMB) collaborations with East Los Angeles rapper Trizz. Between indie projects and working with Amalgam Digital, a digital record label who's artists have included the likes of Lil B and Max B, Chuuwee has a stacked discography under his belt. Chuuwee and Trizz’s collaborative album Amerikka’s Most Blunted was released in March of 2014 and generated a ton of positive buzz. Now, two years later, the duo is back with the sequel, Amerikka’s Most Blunted 2, via Below Systems Records. To learn more about the killer project and duo, I reached out to Chuuwee for an interview; we discussed everything from the artistic direction behind AMB2 to him being the first artist to film a fully volumetric virtual reality music video.

Amoeblog: Prior to Americas’s Most Blunted, you had an onslaught of solo projects. How did you and Chuuwee, Trizz, Amerikka's Most Blunted 2Trizz link up and start working together and collaborating?

Recap: Charity Auction for the Los Angeles LGBT Center at Amoeba Hollywood

Charity Auction at Amoeba Hollywood

We were so excited to have our very own Brandon Mather wielding the auction gavel and bringing the laughs at Amoeba Hollywood's charity auction for the Los Angeles LGBT Center on Saturday, June 4th. Brandon Mather is an actor and comedian who has appeared in short films, a music video, and on stage in Point Break Live. He deftly (and hilariously!) auctioned off a crazy array of concert tickets, collectibles, and other things you never knew you had to have. As always, Amoeba matched all winning bids up---which means we doubled the money going to charity!

All proceeds from our June charity auction benefited the Los Angeles LGBT Center, the world’s largest provider of programs and services for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Their youth center on Highland helps serve homeless LGBT youth by providing housing, meals, showers, counseling and education programs, support groups, employment resources, as well as art and music groups and HIV testing. Miss May I Amoeba Music What's In My Bag?

Though Miss May I may be a metalcore band, they don't exclusively listen to metal, vocalist Levi Benton explains. One of his current favorite bands is the English rock outfit The 1975, whose self-titled album he picked up on a recent trip to Amoeba Hollywood. We got a chance to sit down with Benton after he finished record shopping and checked out his cool picks.

Miss May I DeathlessFormed in Troy, Ohio while the band members were still in high school, Miss May I soon signed to Rise Records with whom they would release their 2009 debut, Apologies Are for the Weak. The following year Monument was released which charted #76 on the Billboard 200. Soon the band was on the road with Warped Tour, playing with such bands as The Devil Wears Prada, Pierce the Veil, and We Came as Romans. In 2012 the band returned to the studio to record At Heart. Rise of the Lion followed in 2014; their most recent release is 2015's Deathless. The band has been touring North America this spring with upcoming shows at the Amnesia Rockfest and Chicago Open Air festivals.

"No One Can Do It Better" than The D.O.C. As Reminded By "Expanded Edition" of 1989 Dr. Dre Produced West Coast Rap Landmark

Posted by Billyjam, June 5, 2016 09:30am | Post a Comment

The D.O.C. No One Can Do It Better (Expanded Edition)

Among the releases to arrive at Amoeba Music this week is the newly reissued version of a West Coast hip-hop staple: No One Can Do It Better (Expanded Edition) by The D.O.C. This must-have hip-hop classic, originally released back in 1989 on Ruthless Records and executive produced by Eazy-E, is truly a landmark West Coast Rap album. Coming at a time when N.W.A. were at their career peak and reigned supreme (Ice Cube was still in the group) the album featured the definitive production of Dr. Dre which perfectly complimented the dope flow of this extended family member of N.W.A. Oft overlooked and not given near the same level as props as some of his fellow Golden Era emcees, the Texas born to Compton transplant hip-hop artist was a superbly talented lyrical master of his genre with a unique and commanding style of rapping, coupled with excellent rhyme writing skills.

The D.O.C. "It's Funky Enough" from No One Can Do It Better (Expanded Edition)

Sadly his career as rap vocalist (read more detailed early in following paragraphs) would be cut prematurely short due to an auto accident that destroyed his vocal chords. This late 80's solo debut album of his, that would not have a follow up until the middle of the next decade, offered so many  great songs like the well worn single "It's A Funky Enough" that defined the West Coast golden era sound. In years since "It's Funky Enough" has been commissioned to appear in such games as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Madden NFL 2005 and True Crime: Streets of LA. In addition to the emcee's flow, credit for this album goes to his producer Dr. Dre who was on fire at this time. This newly released Expanded Edition of No One Can Do It Better record comes via Real Gone Music, the label that reissued the album on LP back in April for Record Store Day 2016. On this new CD version you get seven additional tracks including remixes and some instrumentals. There's an Acappella as well as an instrumental of the artist's best known hit single, "It's Funky Enough." The remixes include "The D.O.C. And The Doctor (Noisy Mix)," "The Formula (Funky FM Mix)" and "Mind Blowin' (Remix)." The remaining two bonus tracks are "Somethingtabumpinyacar" and an instrumental of the album single "The Formula."

Six Cure Vinyl Reissues Out This Summer

Posted by Amoebite, June 3, 2016 06:30pm | Post a Comment

Legendary post-punks The Cure are deep in the midst of a 33-show North American tour, their first since 2008. Whether you're a new fan or a die-hard, it's the perfect time to revisit the band's early catalog, and whaddaya know? Elektra is reissuing Robert Smith and co.'s first six albums on 180-gram vinyl. The records will be available in Amoeba stores on September 6th, but you can pre-order now on our website if you'd like to receive a lovely, LP-shaped package in the mail instead.

UPDATE: The Cure vinyl reissues have been delayed from the original release date of July 15th and are now out September 6, 2016.

First up is the band's 1979 debut Three Imaginary Boys. At the time of this release, The Cure were a trio consisting of Robert Smith, Lol Tolhurst, and Michael Dempsey, and the album showcases the band at their most minimal, raw, and tightly-wound on tracks like "10:15 Saturday Night."
Starting with their 1980 release Seventeen SecondsThe Cure took a turn towards the darker, more unsettling sound with which they're now synonymous. It reached #20 on the British album charts, a new high for the still young band off the success of the single "A Forest."
1981's Faith saw the band growing even further immersed in lugubrious sounds and subject matter, with two songs ("All Cats Are Grey" and "The Drowning Man") written in tribute to the gothic-inspired Gormenghast novels by English author Mervyn Peake. Although it received mixed reviews from critics, fans responded well to Faith and the album climbed even higher up the British charts this time around, landing at the #14 slot.
On Pornography, the band began working with a new producer, Phil Thornalley, leading NME reviewer Dave Hill to describe the album as sounding like "Phil Spector in hell." The album peaked at #8 in the UK albums chart, with the single "The Hanging Garden" hitting at #32.
1984's The Top took The Cure in new directions, inspired by Smith's stints with The Glove and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The band's commercial success continued to snowball, with the album landing at #10 on the charts (but being largely ignored by critics).
In 1985, The Head on the Door took the band down a more pop-oriented route, with alternative radio mainstays like "Close to Me" and "In Between Days." With this album, The Cure established a higher profile in the US and in France (as well as in the UK); the album was certified gold in all three countries.

Pre-order The Cure vinyl reissues on Amoeba.com and they'll ship free to the U.S.!

Bonus Hiero Day: Del The Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, Tajai, Phesto, Opio, A-Plus, DJ Toure & Domino - June 25 @ UC Theatre

It will truly be a Hiero Day on Saturday, June 25th in Berkeley at the UC Theatre. That's when the entire Hieroglyphics hop-hop ensemble will be performing on stage on the one night. Yep that's all the members of the 25 year strong legendary Oakland collective: Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, the mighty Souls of Mischief (Opio, A-Plus, Phesto, and Tajai), Pep Love, Domino and DJ Toure.  Having all these Hiero acts on the same stage on the same date doesn't even always happen on the official Hiero Day: the annual hip-hop music and culture festival that the veteran crew curate in their hometown each Labor Day weekend. In its five short years Hiero Day has rapidly grown and blossomed to become an institution, and one to be officially recognized as such by the City Of Oakland

Frank Zappa

Sony Pictures Classics and Amoeba Music invite you to an advance screening of Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words, followed by a Q&A with director Thorsten Schütte and his daughter Moon Zappa, Wednesday, June 15th at Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood.

To attend this free screening and Q&A, RSVP via email to frankzapparsvp@gmail.com. Please note, seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. RSVP is for you and one guest and is nontransferable.

Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words is a new documentary about with the iconoclastic composer and musician who died far too early, at age 52 of cancer. Director Thorsten Schütte has painstakingly gathered rare archival footage of Zappa interviews and performances from obscure TV stations around the world. This intimate portrait follows Zappa from clean-shaven, besuited youth, to fearless chief freak, to his relentlessly productive final days before his death. The documentary opens in theaters June 24th.

"The film captures so much of the full throttle genius of our dad. He was a misfit who was ahead of his time and who stayed the creative course against all odds. I'm so grateful that this movie may reach even one person who commits (or recommits) to their inherent gifts regardless of the opposing messages the world can spew." -- Moon Zappa

In NPR Interview on Their New Movie "Popstar" The Lonely Island Shout Out Amoeba As Part of Their Musical Upbringing

Posted by Billyjam, June 2, 2016 11:10am | Post a Comment

During Wednesday's NPR broadcast of Fresh Air, in which host Terry Gross conducted an indepth interview with comedy troupe The Lonely Island about their new mockumentarty Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping that opens Friday, June 3rd Amoeba Music got a nice shout-out. The musical satirical comedy trio of Andy Samberg, and Akiva Schaffer, who came to fame over the past decade with their Digital Shorts (“Dick in a Box,” “Lazy Sunday” etc.) during their popular tenure at SNL,  officially formed The Lonely Island in 2001 in Berkeley where they grew up. But the trio had been inseparable friends from years earlier when they all first met attending Berkeley's Willard Middle School and then afterwards attending Berkeley High School* together.

That friendship, bonded by a love of music, comedy, skateboarding, and graffiti, continued after they graduated Berkeley HIgh in 1996 and heading off to college. [*Note that the successful comedy trio generously donated funds to Berkeley High a few years back to help with needed renovations of the school buildings.]

It was growing up in Berkeley where the three would make trips to Amoeba Music on Telegraph Ave. to find new music. In their NPR interview earlier today when Terry Gross asked if they ever had aspirations of being actual music artists when they all growing up, they responded that they were always into the satirical aspect of looking at pop and rap music but fans of music nonetheless. "I was into doing jokey rap stuff in high school but it was never serious. It was always, it would be cool to do this as a form of comedy," offered Samberg with Schaffer adding, "We were just kids who liked comedy and we liked music. We were nerds about that stuff. We were the kids who would go out of our way to find the new song, the new record at Amoeba." Little did they realize that years later Amoeba Music would be carrying their albums including Incredibad, Turtleneck & Chain (also on vinyl), and The Wack Album.
