may not be an officially recognized national holiday (yet) but that matters little to the legions of pot enthusiasts, especially in the Bay Area, who will gather at various venues and events throughout today to celebrate the annual hemp holiday. Think of 4/20 as the Record Store Day for cannabis connoisseurs. It's a day when new strains are unveiled, when clubs do giveaways and specials, and musical acts including lots of hip-hoppers perform to celebrate the beloved date. Assigned to the 20th day of the fourth month, which is derived from the daily 4:20pm designated dank time, 4/20 is a relatively recent phenomenon.  While it has only been around for a couple of decades, 4/20 day celebrations have exponentially grown in popularity over time, especially in the past few years.

Fueling this noticeable national increase in public celebrating of cannabis consumption, are the steps been taken by many states across the US toward legalizing or non-criminalizing cannabis for either medical or recreational use. While Colorado may have legalized weed and California just okayed it for medical use, from travels throughout both states, my experience is that California is much more open and free minded about cannabis consumption (not to mention way more affordable!). Consequently some of the best 4/20 celebrations are taking place in the Golden State today, especially in the Bay Area where Cypress Hill are among the many artists performing. Below is a rough guide to 4/20 events in the Bay.

Long recognized as hip-hop's leading ambassadors of weed (Snoop Dogg comes in a close second), since they began their career in the early nineties Cypress Hill have consistently been outspoken advocates for the legalization of weed for medical, recreational as well as industrial (hemp) use. Meanwhile their catalog of weed anthems include "I Wanna Get High,"  "Hits From The Bong,"  "Roll it Up, Light it Up, Smoke it Up,"  "I Love You Mary Jane," and "Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk."  No doubt most of these cannabis classics will be rolled into their headlining set at tonight's Bay Area performance. Taking place at San Francisco's Bill Graham Civic Auditorium at an early show (note 5:30pm start), Cypress Hill will be joined by an array of fellow hip-hop weed advocates including Juicy J, J Boog, Chronixx, Kool John, Dizzy Wright, and Berner. In fact the hometown rapper/weed entrepreneur (recently profiled on the Amoeblog) is the organizer behind today's big concert that he's billed as Berner Presents Hippie Hill. Doors open at 4:20pm, Show time is 5:30pm. All tickets are general admission. Advance tix. Cypress Hill's B-Real will also be doing a solo set this evening at Luxx (formerly Club Six).

Across the Bay Bridge in Berkeley CBCB dispensary at 3033 Shattuck Ave. will outdo last year's excellent musical lineup with non-stop entertainment today that will include sets by excellent emcee Deuce Eclipse, DJ Lazyboy, Kurious, Kure All and (headliner) DJ Shortkut. A few days ago I talked with the world renowned DJ  who boasts membership of the Beat Junkies, Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and Triple Threat DJs, who confirmed that his set will include hip-hop and reggae music with weed themes. All the cannabis dispensaries are having special events today including lots of freebies been handed out (#FreeDank). Note that to gain access one must have a medical marijuana card which may be obtained to CA residents following a doctor's evaluation at places like San Francisco's Green Evaluations.

Billed as The 420 East Bay Get Down, in Oakland tonight will be another excellent 4/20 hip-hop event with Pep Love from the Hieroglyphics crew, criminally underrated super-talented SF emcee Z-Man, longtime Oakland DJ True Justice, Berkeley rapper Little Larry and El Kool Kyle laying down the sounds. The 9pm show happens at the Stork Club with "420 friendly patio" at 2330 Telegraph Ave. 21+ More info

Other events include politically themed, reggae-flavored and witty entitled Burn One For Bernie at Au Lounge at 2430 Broadway in Oakland. Billed as a "4/20 Cannabis Awareness Reggae Concert" and including voter registration, performers at tonight's 9pm/21+ show will include the 7th Street Band, Sister Dyimah, Binghi Ghost, Luv Fyah, DJ Riddim, and DJ Atreau. Also scheduled are such speakers as congressional candidate Preston Picus, and activist / SaveCannabis founder Dave Hodges. As noted by the organizers of this free event, one of Bernie Sanders' policies is to remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act, leaving it up to the states to decide on the issue. Appropriately named longtime East Bay weed advocate Dan K Harvest, who used to throw 4/20 parties back in the day, returns after a decade to throw a 2016 4/20 party. However it will not happen today but on Saturday at 9pm at the Ivy Room in Albany. The big Bay Area Hemp Con already took place over this past weekend but later this month will be the Cannabis Job Fair for those interested in employment in "America's fastest growing industry." Scheduled for Saturday April 30th from 10am to 6pm, the Fair takes place at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. More info from Join The Green Rush. And finally, happening not just today 4/20 but through September 25th, is the recently opened Altered State: Marijuana in California exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) which poses objective questions like "Simple seed or evil weed?" and "Medical miracle or gateway drug?"
