Record Store Day 2016 at Amoeba Hollywood

Hundreds of vinyl collectors and music fans of all ages gathered in the wee hours of the morning on April 16th to celebrate Record Store Day at Amoeba Hollywood. By 7 a.m., a line stretched down Ivar Avenue, coiling around the back parking lot in anticipation for the store’s opening.

Folks brought chairs and showed up at daybreak to score exclusive RSD releases from Madonna, Lush, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Deftones, J Dilla and many more. As we started ringing up RSD customers at 9:15 a.m., those sought after titles were going like hotcakes, such as Mexican-America metal band Brujeria’s satirical Viva Presidente Trump! LPs in various colors.

Familiar faces from years past joined young’uns gunning for releases by the likes of Gerard Way, Mac DeMarcoRun the JewelsTwenty One Pilots and The Weeknd. Given that it was our ninth go around with RSD, things seemed to be moving as smoothly as possible. By midday, releases by The DoorsFleetwood MacRegina SpektorDeath Cab For Cutie and others were already sold out.

The kind folks at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf ® provided free coffee and pastries to make that early morning wait a little bit better. Warner Bros. Records satisfied our sweet tooth with free ice cream and goodie bags, while Hubert's Lemonade quenched our thirst with free ice-cold lemonade as the day began to get unseasonably warm.

It wasn't just about the releases — we also had lots of stuff happening outside the store. Free caricatures for the kids by Rene, tarot readings by Maverick Mystic, delicious vegan Jackfruit burritos by Pure Luck Pop Up, a mini sidewalk sale, and the prize wheel kept the day fun for everyone — even those dragged along by their parents, significant others, friends, owners or what have you.

Back inside, our friends from Family Industries were here once again to do live silk screening of four exclusive RSD designs on t-shirts and tote bags. All proceeds benefited the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, along with offering a collectible keepsake from the day.

Special guest DJs kept us grooving. First up was producer, composer and percussionist Toby Dammit. When he's not DJing, he's the on-site Musicologist at the Oslo House of Culture.

DJ Lance Rock, former Amoebite and current Yo Gabba Gabba ringleader, was next on the wheels of steel.

Actor, comedian, and musician Fred Armisen was our final guest DJ for the afternoon, bringing along his limited edition Flaming Lips brain and sharing it with fans who crowded at the foot of the DJ booth.

We finished the evening with a party across the street in the courtyard at Space 15Twenty featuring a live performance from former Woods basist / Babies co-founder Kevin Morby and DJ sets from MNDSGN and Best Coast.
