David James's GPS

For the Amoeblog's second edition of Talent Show, a place to show off newer acts that will undoubtedly change life as you know it, we're keeping it very local to Amoeba San Francisco. All three of our Amoeba locations are brimming with talented staff members; from musicians to writers, from dancers to actors, from painters to comedians and everything in between, we span the arts more completely than just about any other workplace. At Amoeba SF, we have a buyer and manager who has dedicated his considerable talents as a guitarist, singer, and composer to the Bay Area music scene for nearly 20 years. I'm talking about David James, people.

Showing remarkable range, David James has played, toured, and recorded with the likes of Spearhead, David James's GPSThe Coup, Sila and the Afrofunk Experience (as well as the Afrofunk Experience, as it's now known), Thessalonians, and the Beth Custer Ensemble. His newest project, David James's GPS, pairs him with trombonist Alan Williams, Dina Maccabee on viola, Jan Jackson on drums, Lisa Mezzacappa on acoustic bass, and Beth Custer on clarinet. David James's GPS (the GPS stands for Good People, Son, of course) has just released their first album, Billionaire Blues, and it also happens to be the first album of music written solely by David James. Just like his musical resume, the album's sound is diverse showing off the sextet's technical chops and wide-ranging interests. Songs bounce from jazz to waltz to Reggae to blues to Afro-beat to Euro-beat. Why buy a round-the-world cruise when you can check in to Billionaire Blues for repeated listens?!

Or better yet, head out to the Make Out Room in San Francisco on Thursday, February 25th for their album release party. Find out more about David James's GPS HERE!
