We're kicking off the new year and our 9th season of "What's In My Bag?" with two episodes from Future Islands! The Baltimore-based indie rock band consists of vocalist Samuel T. Herring, programmer & keyboard player Gerrit Welmers, and bassist/guitarist William Cashion. They met while studying art at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, where they played together as part of the band Art Lord & the Self-Portraits. They signed to Thrill Jockey in 2009, releasing In Evening Air in 2010 and On the Water in 2011. Future Islands SinglesThree years later, Future Islands signed to 4AD and released the album Singles. The band made their network TV debut in 2014 on The Late Show with David Letterman, drawing attention for Herring’s onstage antics during their performance of "Seasons (Waiting on You)." Watch the band's 2010 performance from Amoeba Hollywood (below) to get a sense of just what kind of live show they put on. Herring did not let a leg splint slow his performance down...

In Part 1, the trio goes shopping for albums by Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks, Karen Dalton, Randy Rhoads and lots more at Amoeba San Francisco. Herring, who is a huge hip hop head, performs under the alias Hemlock Ernst and even released an EP with Madlib in September 2015. In Part 2, Sam shares stories about mail ordering hip hop tapes as a teenager and drops some serious knowledge.
