This Amoeblog, which includes music videos by ten of the numerous talented acts that will perform at this weekend's Art Of Rap Festival, is geared to act as a primer for the Ice-T-curated,  two-day, two-location (SoCal and NorCal) event that includes some of the best MC names in the history of hip-hop, such as Rakim, Melle Mel, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, and the Cold Crush Brothers featuring Grandmaster Caz. Taking place today (Saturday, July 18th) in SoCal at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre and then tomorrow up at the Shoreline Amphiteather in Mountain View, the ambitious project is an outgrowth of the documentary film Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap from a few years ago. The documentary features many of the same acts in the film, which is now available from Amoeba on DVD as well as the accompanying soundtrack on CD and LP that features lots of the freestyle and live versions of songs featured throughout the documentary).

With so many great acts booked that span the genre's several decades, the concert is a hip-hop history event. Ice-T is calling the event "the most prolific and essential hip-hop festival" to date and he just might be right. In fact the only problem is that it is too much of a good thing, if that is possible, since, with so many essential acts to catch, you are bound to miss out on something.
Below are music videos by the ten best artists performing over the two days at the Art Of Rap Festival, subjectively chosen by me based on their historic importance as well as with consideration of the actual song chose.

Note that the line-up is close but not identical for each day with such artists as Kurtis Blow,Too $hort, Ras Kass, Big Daddy Kane, Afrika Bambaataa, Mack 10, Xzibit, Slick Rick, Tha Alkaholiks, and Grandmaster Melle Mel performing both days. However today's Irvine venue has several acts booked just for the first day exclusively like Rakim, Warren G, and The Game. Click here for tix and exact breakdown, or peep the flyer above. In addition to all the rappers on stage, the other elements of the genre also get shine over the two days with the festival promising displays of "graffiti and dance troupes, car shows and freestyle battles."
