Chaka Khan "I Feel For You"

There's a reason why New Yorkers endure those long winters with snow and frigid temps like this past one that never seemed like it was going to end, and that brought an onslaught of snowstorms and temperatures so low  that just make you want to stay inside. And that reason is the reward at the end of it all when summer finally arrives with all the great (mostly outdoor, much of it free) stuff that takes place across New York City for the summer months such as this evening's Prospect Park free concert by Chaka Khan.  The free concert by the Queen of Funk, whose rich back catalog of solo and Rufus hits include "I Feel For You" and "Tell Me Something Good" respectively, kicks off the always excellent Celebrate Brooklyn summer long concert series that will include such other acts as Willie Nelson and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (pictured left). It happens through September at the Prospect Park Bandshell at Union St Brooklyn, NY. More info. It is just one of countless 2015 summer series kicking off around New York City where there are so many free park shows going on - many simultaneously and across all five boroughs - that you have to really pick and choose which one you really have to see since so many overlap.

Other new series just begun or about to begin include tomorrow's (June 4th) kick off summer party, Sunset Jammin, at the Brooklyn Bridge Park situated right under the historic bridge on the Brooklyn side where you get the best views looking back into Manhattan. More info.  Also kicking off tomorrow is the Tools of War produced 2015 True School Park Jam Series with a free, bound to be fun event done in the historic hip-hop park jam tradition with Kool DJ Red Alert, Marlon B, and Looie Loo spinning with Grandmaster Caz as "forever" host at Poor Richard's Playground (temporarily moved from nearby White Park that's currently under construction) in Spanish Harlem at E. 109th & 3rd Ave where every Thursday this month will be a True Skool Park Jam. Upcoming weeks' DJs will include Eclipse, Evil Dee, Bobbito, Tony Touch, PopMaster Fabel, Bobby Morales, and Lean Rock. More info/updates. Midtown Manhattan's Bryant Park, where not a summer's day is wasted without some concert or event taking place, has already begun their non-stop entertainment that  includes such things as tango dancing at the 42nd Street park's Fountain Terrace from 6pm to 8:30pm this evening, to their long running (23 years now) HBO Monday night movies on the lawn series where they screen modern classics.  The first screening, which will be June 22nd, will be Ghostbusters. Movies start at dark but lawn opens at 5pm Mondays. More general info.
