The brand new number one hip-hop chart entry at Amoeba Music Berkeley this week (thank-you to E-Lit for providing the above top five chart) is the collaborative effort of Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah and Canadian jazz trio BadBadNotGood for their one-off, full-length, joint project Sour Soul on Lex Records - available for now in CD format only with a soon be released vinyl format to follow. While not billed as such, this new album could be considered the third part of a live collaborative trilogy by Ghostface since like his last two releases - last year's 36 Seasons and 2013's Twelve Reason To Die - Sour Soul is another production that finds the WU emcee rhyming with a live band. This time out it's BadBadNotGood who, as well as their own work as a trio, have previously collaborated with the likes of Danny Brown (who coincidentally appears here) and Earl Sweatshirt - although only on individual tracks, not a full length project as here with Ghostface Killah. The end result is a strong album whose standout tracks include "Mind Playing Tricks," "Tone's Rap," "Gunshowers (feat elZhi)," and “Ray Gun (feat. DOOM)” (see music video below).

Despite having a reputation for not being the most desirable place in California to live in, Fresno   has a
history of bringing the world some great artists - with Fashawn being a prime example. An artist who transcends labels and seems to fit in with and be respected by all schools of current hip-hop/rap Fashawn has just unleashed his second official solo album The Ecology which is the long awaited follow up to 2009's Boy Meets World. Mind you he has been far from idle in the meantime, working closely with such other artists as The Alchemist  and Murs with whom he recorded the collaborative albums The Antidote and FASHionably Late, and This Generation on Duck Down respectively. LA super producer Exile, who produced Boy Meets World, returns behind the boards for most of the album with such other producers as Beewirks who produced the track "Guess Who's Back" (video below) for the 13 track The Ecology which is released via Nas’ new label Mass Appeal Records and will be released on vinyl in AprilNas is among the guests on the new album with others including BJ The Chicago Kid,  Dom Kennedy, and Aloe Blacc who also appeared on the first Fashawn album. Note that Fashawn plays at Echoplex in LA tonight (Feb 26th) and at Leo's in North Oakland on Saturday of next weekend (March 7th).

Other new chart entries this week at Amoeba include talented rapper Big Sean who this week, via Def Jam, released  Dark Sky Paradise that is also avail as a deluxe CD release. The Detroit artist, who gives credit to Kanye West for taking him under his wing and helping kick start his successful career (he signed with West's GOOD Music back in 2007) serves up a star-studded array of tracks on the new album (his follow up to 2013's Hall Of Fame) including E-40, Drake, Lil Wayne, John Legend, Chris Brown, Ty Dolla $ign, and the aforementioned Kanye West. Standout tracks include the powerful album opening track, lead single "Dark Sky (Skyscrapers)" - see its accompanying music video above.

And below is the video for the new EP track "Recognition" off the Seattle based alt-soul/hip-hop duo THEESatisfaction's brand new joint EarthEE on Sub Pop that is also available on vinyl and as download digital files. The uniquely talented pair, made up of  emcee Stasia "Stas" Irons and singer Catherine "Cat" Harris-White, continue to defy strict categorization with this  follow-up to 2012’s Awe Naturale. Tonight they play their hometown's Neumos Crystal Ball Reading Room, and on Saturday (Feb 28th) travel down to LA to play at Jewel's Catch One.

Tonight in the Bay Area in a place not normally associated with turntablism - there's a big cash prize DJ battle happening at The Churchyard Pub on Park with competitors including DJ Lazyboy, DJ Goldeneye, DJ Patrix, Illtech the Cutter, DJ RS1, DJ Nutron, MytyMyke, and DJ Lou Short - all battling it out for the $1000 cash prize at the end of the night. The winner also gets a month long Thursday night residency at the club.
