With this year being the 50th anniversary of the historic 1965 Selma to Montgomery freedom marches this year's MLK Jr Day 2015 events all over the country will take on extra importance. There are countless events happening all over the US and California. Here a handful of those taking place in LA and the Bay Area including a comic book event in San Francisco.

MLK Jr Day 2015 is day two of the Black Comix Arts Festival whose goal is to celebrate the creativity and subjectivity of African Americans in the comic arts and popular visual culture. Open to all ages, it will include a grand exposition, special guest artist presentations, film screening, and activities for kids. The event kicks off the day before (Sunday, January 18) and happens both days at the San Francisco Public Library's main library and at the Metreon. More information and times click here.

Day of service in Oakland. Something that's become increasingly popular over the years is inviting folks (with the day off work or school) to participate in a day of service - typically doing clean up work on public beaches or parks. Tapping into that theme is the MLK Day of Service 2015 at Shepherds Canyon, Oakland where the goal of the day is to transforming "a former dump into a place of natural beauty." Takes place on MLK Jr Day from 9am to 12:30pm. Volunteers should meet at the Escher Gate, 5881 Escher Drive, Oakland. More info.

San Francisco MLK Day Parade:  In celebration of MLK Jr Day and the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches there will be an MLK 2015 commemorative march/parade in San Francisco. Beginning at 11am it starts at the SF Caltrain Station before winding over (not too far a walk -  about a mile and a half) to Yerba Buena Gardens (3rd and Mission) where the San Francisco Interfaith Council will present a "spiritual reflection" of MLK's message. Begins at 4th and King.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2015 events in Los Angeles include the big annual Martin Luther King Jr. Kingdom Day Parade 2015. And with
mostly sunny with highs of 73 degrees being the LA area weather forecast for Monday January 19th it promises to be the perfect day to partake in this 30th Annual Kingdom Day Parade and join others in celebrating the life and legacy of this civil rights icon. Fittingly the parade takes place along Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Los Angeles, starting at MLK Jr. Blvd at Western Avenue. It starts at 11am and will travel through various neighborhoods along MLK before finishing at Vernon Avenue. Then after the parade, which will broadcast live on Channel 7, the celebrations will begin with live music and lots of food trucks etc. Free all ages. More info.

In true tradition of MLK Jr and the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Southern California will take place at 6 pm at Sheraton Gateway Hotel (located at 6101 W. Century Blvd.) where Dr. Robert Singleton, his wife, Helen, and Margaret Dammond Preacely will each be honored with the Rosa Parks Humanitarian Award for their contributions to civil rights over the years. For information and exact times and details click here.

The organization Gay For Good (G4G) will celebrate MLK Day by organizing a school beautification project at Santee Education Complex when volunteers will build a large edible garden with hydroponics and paint murals around the campus near downtown LA. According to the organizers it's a newer school but one that has few amenities so any help from the community will help make a signifiant difference. Volunteers are asked to arrive by 8:30am and stay until 1pm (complimentary lunch provided). Santee Education Complex is located at 1921 Maple Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90011. More info and RSVP here
