Marshall Crenshaw

Marshall Crenshaw is an accomplished musician, singer and songwriter. He's co-written a ton of songs and has composed music for film and television, including the title track for the film Walk Hard, starring John C. Riley. Not to mention he's got a knack for acting too! Prior to becoming a recording artist, Crenshaw played the role of John Lennon in the Broadway musical Beatlemania. Crenshaw also played Buddy Holly in the Ritchie Valens biopic, La Bamba

Marshall's break came after he and his brother Robert started a New York based trio. They recorded the single "Something's Gonna Happen," which led to a deal with Warner Brothers. Crenshaw's eponymous debut album was released in 1982 and included the song "Someday, Someway," which reached #36 on the Billboard Top 100 chart. The '90s Pop rock band, Gin Blossoms' song, "Til I Hear It from You," was co-written by Crenshaw and it reached #11 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1996. The dude knows a thing or two about writing hit songs.

Jumping on the popular indie movement of crowd funding, Crenshaw launched a successful Kickstarter campaign for a subscription service to fund his latest releases. By contributing to his campaign, fans will receive 6 EPs pressed on 10 inch vinyl over the span of two years. What a great way to utilize the Internet while staying relevant with fans! His latest EPs are Red Wine (2014) and Move Now (2014)

Crenshaw visited Amoeba Hollywood and hung out with our What's In My Bag? crew. He gets things started with a copy of Sun Ra's Sound of Joy on vinyl and talks about the importance of its producer, Tom Wilson. Marshall says, "Sun Ra is a name every music fan should know." Attracted by the cover art, he grabs a copy of Sitar Beat Vol 2 on vinyl. It's a great compilation of Indian style funk for all you world music lovers. Marshall Crenshaw digs deep when it comes to finding records and he has a vast knowledge of the musicians and producers who played on the various albums he finds. You can hear some of his picks on his Saturday night radio show, The Bottomless Pit, on WFUV 90.7FM in New York.
