Best What's In My Bag Episodes of 2014

2014 has been a big year for our "What's In My Bag?" series. All of our episodes are now captured and presented in gorgeous full HD and inscribed with a rad new hand-drawn logo. With our new tools we are continuing to try and step up our game creatively and seek out guests as interesting and uncommon as the items that are found in each episodes. This year we featured a Belgian pop star, a godfather of hip hop, an ace baker, a pair of British psych pop legends, a child star, an '80s icon, and not one but two Flaming Lips.

Here is our list of the Top 10 episodes from 2014, but since we couldn't leave it at just 10 check out the honorable mentions as well. Enjoy and thanks for watching!!

10) Michel Faber

Dutch-born author Michel Faber (Under the Skin, The Crimson Petal and the White) visited Amoeba San Francisco where he picked up an eclectic and esoteric selection ranging from folk to rock to experimental and beyond. He also waxes poetic about the beauty of vinyl packaging and the idea of an album as a book.

9) Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band

A side project for TV on The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band (it’s like the drawing ink conjoined with Captain Beefheart’s band) schooled us on some very cool music, including the story behind the Mighty Bohannon's use of the echoplex, and an Afro-Cuban record that is only for private listening. The vinyl they dig for is proof not only of their varied influences, but also the depth of their tastes.

8) Sky Ferreira

Before singer, songwriter, model and actress Sky Ferreira performed to a packed house of incredibly excited fans at Amoeba Hollywood, she gave us an enlightening look into her bag. She discussed one of the most formative films of her youth, the lost folk icon Linda Perhacs, the influence on Quentin Tarantino, and her lifelong affection for gore films.

7) The Glitch Mob

Justin, Edward, and Josh dug deep into their musical past and discussed how they formed the roots of their band around Drum & Bass, Hip Hop, Industrial, and Dub. Taking their sound to heart, we glitched out this episode, which marks our first foray into datamoshing.

6) Liars

New York's experimental rock band, Liars explored nearly every corner of Amoeba Hollywood, picking up freestyle, rock, '90s hip hop, soundtracks, electronic and beyond. Angus also revealed his deep affection for the lyrical stylings of Michael Franks and was more than willing to lay a couple of verses on us.

5) The Zombies

Not only was it an honor for our team to meet rock and roll royalty, but it was an absolute pleasure to hear Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone of English rock group the Zombies dig into their musical interests, past and present. They took us on a journey that started well before Elvis and continues on with new music by London Grammar for Colin's daughter. They described performing after Patti LaBelle in 1964 on their first trip to the States and, later, driving around Los Angeles, singing along to Steve Wonder's Songs In the Key of Life.

4) Against Me!

Laura Jane Grace, James Bowman, Atom Williard, and Inge Johansson of punk band Against Me! talk about some of their favorite artists, including X, The Doors, and The Damned, as well as new albums from Lykke Li and Neko Case. Not only did Inge’s sly goofball wit keep Laura Jane cracking up throughout, but he had our crew laughing so hard we struggled to keep the cameras from shaking.

3) A-Trak

Accomplished DJ/turntablist and record label owner A-Trak (aka Alain Macklovitch) is a pro, to say the least. At age 15, A-Trak became the youngest person (and the first Canadian) to win the coveted DMC World DJ Championship title. His incredible knowledge, experience, and passion are very apparent in this episode. He tells a story about hanging out with Madlib and Peanut Butter Wolf in the early days of Stones Throw Records and talks about the history of sampling and breakbeat records. Get a lesson at the feet of one of the masters!

2) Mac DeMarco

Often dubbed as "slacker" rock, Canadian Mac DeMarco is anything but a slacker. Earlier this year Mac DeMarco played an hour-long set to 700+ adoring fans at Amoeba San Francisco. In this episode you really get a sense of why people like him so much and why they feel so connected to him personally. Watch as a fan interrupts the filming to ask for an autograph and Mac takes it in stride, making her day and ours. Then there's his picks, which includes a surprising similarity to a Springsteen album.

1) White Fence

Los Angeles-based musician Tim Presley has been performing as White Fence since 2010. Prior to that he was in Darker My Love, collaborated with Ty Segall, and toured with The Fall. Although he may not have the biggest name recognition of any of our guests this season, his episode is definitely our favorite. His passion for music, his eclecticism, his breadth of knowledge, and his authenticity shine through in this video. We heart White Fence.
