Deerhoof – “Paradise Girls”

OK, we can officially get excited for the new Deerhoof album. The first two tracks they’ve unveiled from La Isla Bonita (out Nov. 4 on Polyvinyl) have the wily energy of their wild early work, along with the refinement they’ve picked up along the way. It’s a very Deerhoof tribute to “girls who play bass guitar” and are smart, and it’s great.

Meatbodies – “Disorder”

Another cool track from the band Meatbodies, who are newly signed to In the Red and release their debut album Oct. 14. It’s the project from Chad Ubovich, who plays guitar for Mikal Cronin and bass for FUZZ, and his latest jam is a hot ‘n’ woozy good time.

Cool Ghouls – “The Mile”

Cool Ghouls had a great, chilled-out self-titled first album of cool West coastal rock ‘n’ roll. From the title of their second album alone, A Swirling Fire Burning Through the Rye (out Nov. 11 on Empty Cellar), this seems like a more ambitious affair, confirmed by “The Mile,” a fiery, harmony-and-tremolo-laden Nugget-rocker with real soul. Yay to this. Here’s my interview with them from a while back.

Girlpool – “Jane”

This snappy bit of lo-fi pop from L.A.’s Girlpool has attitude for days. Over a simple blues riff and beat that sounds more like a lighter being flicked, Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker chant and scream about a dancer named Jane who punches her boyfriend Tommy for “talking out of both sides of his mouth” and calls for all Janes to “put your fist up too.” Tbh I kinda feel bad for Tommy in this sitch, but hey, don’t fuck with a Jane. They’ll be at Pehrspace Sept. 12 & 14. The Girlpool EP is out now.

Ty Segall – “Manipulator” video

True to its name, the video for the title track from Ty Segall’s excellent new album lets you play with it to add your own psychedelic flair. Check it out on ty-segall.com, or watch director Simon Wiscombe’s runthrough below.
