If This is House, I Want My Money Back III CD

Permananet Vacation

Terrific compilation that's acts as a good indicator on the state of current underground house music. Permanent Vacation shows an admirable dedication to exposing newer US/EU producers alongside relatively established names. Highlights include the dubby, warp zone funk of Lake People, Willie Burns' slightly chilled out take on his Hauge-influenced sound and one of the best Achterbahn D'Amour tracks to date. They can keep my money.

Blase - Sunset Dawn

Blase

Sunset Dawn LP

ESP Institute

Secret Circuit and Suzanne Kraft debut their breezy cosmic-afrobeat collaboration just in time for summer. Though both of these chaps know their way around a synth, stringed instruments are fully embraced on Sunset Dawn. "Breathing Made Easy" features a hypnotic acoustic guitar, while the low-key heroics on "Downtown Salad" recall mid-period Floyd. Shuffling rhythms are complimented by adroit melodic interplay within these improv-based jams - they sound like they're having a good time, you will too.

Memphis Trax 12"

Mystical Disco

If you're unfamiliar with the sound of Memphis, now is the time to get acquainted. A country mile away from the classic Stax sound, this comp finds Larry Heard-protege Ben Jenkins and friends plumbing the depths with dark, acidic techno. Jenkins himself is up first, his "Hi Polymer (Reduced Clap Mix)" is trippy, spanning material that will appeal to fans of Joey Anderson and Donato Dozzy. Jackson Lee takes a more soulful approach with "Persistence", focusing on a wordless vocal sample before bringing the 303 in. Recommended.

PTA - ChaunceyPittsburgh Track Authority

Chauncey/I've Still Got Sunshine 12"

PTA

On the eve of the release of their debut LP, PTA dropped this quick hit record store day 12". Pure DJ heat, perhaps their most streamlined, club-ready effort yet (with "Missile" of their Work Them 12" being a possible exception). Chauncey is a mid-tempo acid jam with some subtle hip-hop vocal samples and percussive touches that shift like the clouds. The B, a remix of a Robert Lux & Todd Edwards that appeared only in digital form previously, is fast, no-nonsense house with a hyperactive vocal sample.

Bleep 10

Bleep:10 CD

Warp

Warp's retail end coming with a raft of exclusives from some estimable names. Gas (!) begins the mix with a more ominous version of his trademark forest ambience. Lone and Machinedrum quickly bring the compilation away from 4/4, where it remains for much of its duration. Untold's "That Horn Track" is influenced by Blawan's corrosive work. IDM forefathers Autechre appear alongside their progeny (Oneohtrix Point Never, Dabrye ). Byetone provides a straight-ahead techno highlight and Nathan Fake ends the comp with distorted bliss. Stacked!

Prostitutes - Petit CochonProstitutes

Petit Cochon LP

Spectrum Spools

Fascinating full-length statement from Cleveland's Prostitutes, wherein he abandons the noisey glaze of previous work and demonstrates production chops that will allow him to run with the big dogs. Only "Bluffer's Corporation" bears the abrasive trademark of previous efforts -- tracks like "Four Basic Forces" are closer to something on the Raster Noton roster. Prostitutes continues to push it elsewhere. "A Number Between Their Eyes" is a warbling, synth paean with only a hint of kick buried in the debris. "Cylindrical Habit" is mainly panning industrial drums and a synth turning over slowly, it's like a bonus beat for the delirious.

Lot.te - Pressure Chant

Lot.te

Pressure Chant 12"

The Bunker New York

Farily stunning debut from Lot.te on the new, hyper-consistent Bunker New York label. Lot.te is a Bunker party regular who was growing tired of the often recognizable trademarks of computer-only production. He repaired to analog gear and came out with an amazing Surgeon/Robert Hood style banger. The b-side, "Private Transgressions", shows an equal skill for chilled-out dub techno.
