Switchboard Music Festival Features Kronos Quartet World Premieres, April 12

On Saturday, April 12th from 2-10pm at San Francisco's Brava Theater, Switchboard Music presents kronos quartetits seventh annual marathon music festival. Festival headliners Kronos Quartet will perform world premieres by Switchboard co-director Ryan Brown and Bay Area composer Sahba Aminikia. The Festival also includes performances of works by Bang on a Can’s Michael Gordon, Chicago Symphony resident composer Anna Clyne, Wojciech Kilar, Nicole Lizee, Tom Johnson, Julia Wolfe, and Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier. The complete 2014 lineup includes the Kronos Quartet, Matthew Welch’s Blarvuster, Dublin, Kate Campbell, Odessa Chen and the Invisible Stories Ensemble, Gamelan X, Jordan Glenn and Michael Coleman, Grex, Makeunder, Mobius Trio, and more.

Founded in 2008 by Ryan Brown, Jeff Anderle, and Jonathan Russell, the Switchboard Music Festival is a non-stop music spectacle presenting composers and musicians who push the boundaries of their respective genres—be it rock, jazz, classical, hip-hop, world, or something less defined. It is a showcase for innovative local music that easily traverses disparate genres—a physical analog for a borderless, digital world.

In addition to this year’s festival, Switchboard establishes itself as the leading purveyor of genre-bending contemporary music in the Bay Area with the addition of Switchboard Presents. Every third Friday of the month at the Center for New Music, Switchboard Presents features split bills drawn from a roster of Switchboard alumni, 2014 Festival artists, and other acts who fall between genre lines. The series launched on February 21 and continues with performances by Crystal Pascucci’s Wild Hen and the Americana Orchestra with composer Danny Clay (March 21), Nonsemble 6 and the Hurd Ensemble (April 18), Areon Flutes and the Mobius Trio (May 16), and clarinetist Jeff Anderle + Friction Quartet and Makeunder (June 20).
