Amoeba Music Hollywood Hip-Hop Top Five for Week Ending February 21st 2014

1) The Step Brothers Lord Steppington (Rhymesayers  Entertainment)

2) Kendrick Lamar good kid, m.A.A.d city (Aftermath)

3) Dag Savage E&J (Dirty Science)

4) Childish Gambino Because the Internet (Glassnote)

5) Wu-Tang Clan Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers) (RCA)

The above chart is the latest top five based on full-length hip-hop album sales at the Hollywood Amoeba store where hometown heroes
Evidence and The Alchemist (together they are Step Brothers) are still riding high on the number one slot with Lord Steppington. And deservedly so since they really stepped up their (already top notch) game with this flawless, guest rich, 14 track release that is available in both CD and vinyl formats from Amoeba. Nice velvety packaging too thanks to Rhymesayers Entertainment who put it out - reportedly the special packaging of the album delayed the release by a number of weeks since it took longer to manufacture than standard packaged releases. I cannot say enough good things about this new album by this seasoned pair of hip-hop heads - from its pure hip-hop vibe (it sounds new but simultaneously rooted in the best classic 90's hip-hop) to its perfect choice of guests. Besides their collective skills as producers and mic-wreckers and knowledgeable crate diggers (see their WIMB?) this LA hip-hop pair also share a wicked sense of humor as witnessed by the hilarious skits they did a few weeks ago for Mass Appeal's Ill Time series including Episode 2 below in which, with little encouragement, they morph into decadent 70's rockers in the studio mode - complete with wigs and costumes. Hah hah!

Step Brothers goof it up for Mass Appeal (2014)

Dag Savage "Old Times Sake" (2014)

Above is the just published music video for new album track "Old Times Sake" by Dag Savage which is the power duo of Exile and Johaz. Dag Savage's E&J album, released by Dirty Science, is the duo's second album together and is number 3 on the latest Amoeba Hollywood chart that also includes such mainstays as Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city (Aftermath) in both CD and LP formats, and Childish Gambino's Because the Internet (Glassnote). Even more so of a mainstay - or recurring chart entry - is the 1993 landmark release from the WU: Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers) (RCA). Other releases still selling well at Amoeba include Dam-Funk & Snoopzilla's 7 Days of Funk (Stones Throw), and Blu & Exile's Below The Heavens  (Sound In Color).

And finally I leave you with new music from a new crew out of Southern California's Inland Empire area: hip-hop group Equinox Saints (Jynxx, Aries and Dat Heathen): the song "The Equinox" from their upcoming self-titled EP "Equinox Saints".
