Amoeba Music Hollywood Hip-Hop Top Five Week Ending 10:28:11

1) Evidence Cats & Dogs (Rhymesayers Ent.)

2) Murs Love & Rockets Vol. 1: The Transformation (DD172)

3) People Under The Stairs Highlighter (Piecelock 70)

4) Exile 4 Trk Mind (Soulspazam/Fat Beats)

5) Freestyle Fellowship The Promise (Decon)

Thanks to Ray Ricky Rivera at the Hollywood Amoeba store for this week's hip-hop top five chart which, you will notice upon closer examination, features exclusively acts from the SoCal store's surrounding area. As Rivera has told me in the past LA area customers have traditionally been highly supportive of their homegrown hip-hop talent. This week those talents include the LA producer/emcee Evidence who first came to fame as part of Dilated Peoples and who recently connected with the respected Mid West Rhymesayers Entertainment label who have released his highly recommended new  Cats & Dogs album.  LA's Murs, the Living Legends star who for a time lived in the Bay Area, is getting positive feedback all over for his latest release - a collab with Ski Beatz, Love & Rockets Vol. 1: The Transformation including down in New Orleans where, just before the album's October 11th release date, he did a unique promo for the new release on DD172 as seen in video clip below.

Also in videos below is the fun promo for People Under The Stairs' Highlighter release on Piecelock 70 which is the eight album by the duo who have done numerous Amoeba Music in-stores over the years and hence always get much love from Amoeba and its customers. The regrouped Freestyle Fellowship The Promise on Decon continues to sell well and reach new ears as word on this legendary LA crew's might return spreads.

Rounding out this week's hip-hop top five is 4 Trk Mind on Soulspazam/Fat Beats; the latest outing from Exile which sports perhaps hip-hop's most memorable (full on 1970's cheesy mode) album cover of the year (right). The 16 track album offers up Exile as both producer / DJ (really excellent production with lots of cut and paste and scratches layered in over nice beats) and rapper (something that he may be best leaving to such mic collaborators of his as Blu and Fashawn) that leaves much to be desired. Still  4 Trk Mind is worth copping for its dope abstract/instrumental tracks and of course that great album cover art.

In celebration of Halloween tonight Too $hort will headlines the Big Nasty Halloween Party at Mezzanine along with Vin Sol and Pony P. More info. Also tonight in San Francisco is Spindig at The Knockout at 3223 Mission Street where the monthly party will be celebrating its six year anniversary with regulars such as DJ Stef and special guest DJ Eddie K of Space Travelers fame.
