Ray Ricky Rivera @ Amoeba Hollywood with Hip-Hop Top 5 Week Ending 10/7/11

Amoeba Music Hollywood Hip-Hop Top Five for Week ending 10: 07: 11

1) J. Cole Cole World: The Sideline Story (Roc Nation)

2) Evidence Cats & Dogs (Rhymesayers Ent.)

3) 9th Wonder The Wonder Years (It's A Wonderful World Music Group)

4) Madlib No.12-Raw Medicine-Madlib Remixes (Stones Throw)

5) Blu Open (Nature Sounds)

Thanks for this week's Amoeba Hollywood hip-hop chart go to hip-hop recording artist & recent dad Ray Ricky Rivera (aka RRR) who really looks quite well rested (as you can see in above video) despite his sleep patterns been drastically altered of late -ever since he and his wife Lily had their young son Diego born a little over two months ago. Again congrats man! As RRR mentions the number one album at Amoeba, which is also the number one top selling album (of all genres) in the country this week, is the brand new J. Cole album Cole World: The Sideline Story on Roc Nation. In close second is supertalented LA hip-hop artist Evidence who came to fame as part of Dilated Peoples and is now down with the revered Rhymesayers crew with whom he was touring recently and who just released his recommended new album Cats And Dogs which also comes in a vinyl format. Another LA hip-hop treasure, Madlib, is among the other entrants in this week's Top Five (with Medicine Show #12) which is rounded out by releases from both 9th Wonder (The Wonder Years) and Blu (Open).

But the real big hip-hop news today is that over in London, England late last night at the the world cup of turntablism, the 2011 DMC World Finals, USA DJ Vajra took this year's title and won the 2011 DMC World DJ Championships which, as the DMC organizers rightly note, is "the ultimate DJ accolade." In second place was Izoh from Japan. Also from Japan in third place was Co-Ma. Fourth was JFB from England, fifth place was Brazilian battle DJ Erick Jay, and in sixth place was Denmark's DJ Graded. Meanwhile in the competition's 2011 DMC Battle for World Supremacy (head to head) category first place was Deejay Nelson from France with runner up being Japan's Norihito.  And in the third category of this big annual turntable battle, the  2011 DMC World Team DJ Battle, the results were: First: Kireek from Japan, Second: Cla Leste from Brazil, and third place USA's BattleStar  (DeeJay Turbulence & Roger Pho aka Phonics!).

Congrats to all the participants in this year's hotly buzzed DMC World Finals which, as mentioned in this week's two part Amoeblog series on the state of turntablism/skratch music, seems to come at a time when there is a renaissance in the the art form. (link to Amoeblogs on State of Turntablism in 2011: Part One and Part Two).

RIP Jive Records. The label that introduced us to amazing music from such hip-hop artists as Too $hort, Spice 1, Souls of Mischief, Casual, BDP, KRS-One, and A Tribe Called Quest to name but a few of their hip-hop artists is no longer with us. Yesterday (10/7/11) parent company RCA Records dissolved Jive along with two other of its "less profitable imprints" Arista and J Records.

What this actually most likely means is that RCA is essentially downsizing and consolidating these imprints (more layoffs) by bringing all the artists from Jive and the other two imprints into RCA Records proper. But in these scenarios it generally means that things slow down considerably, especially in the A&R department, with few new artists been signed or current ones been developed.

This week 2K Sports released NBA 2K12 that features new hip-hop music from Skyzoo, Smif N Wessun and Pharoahe Monch entitled “Shout the Winners Out” produced by !llmind. New releases this week from Bay Area artists include the new J-Boogie joint and the anticipated latest offering from DJ Shadow, The Less You Know The Better  on Verve which is not the album title he had predicted it would be given, featuring the new single 'Stay The Course' featuring Posndous and Talib Kweli. Note that this month DJ Shadow will be touring in California with concert stops including The Catalyst in Santa Cruz on October 20th, San Francisco's Regency Ballroom on Oct 21st, San Diego's 4th & B on Oct 22nd, and the Music Box in Los Angeles (not far from Amoeba Hollywood) on Oct 23rd. Meanwhile the new J Boogie's Dubtronic Science new release is on Om and is titled Undercover. Compared to past releases by the former KUSF hip-hop DJ, its much less sample based and more organic, live musicianship-driven with his live band, J Boogieʼs Dubtronic Science responsible for most of what you hear on the release that veers off into funk, soul, reggae/dub, and Latin grooves.

The ubiquitous ?Uestlove of The Roots (or Questlove as he seems to be referred to more often these days) is in the Bay Area this weekend with two appearances on his schedule today. Tonight he will be spinning at Public Works in San Francisco alongside such local DJs as Sake 1, DJ Apollo, & Mark Divita. 9pm to 3am. 21+ $ and this afternoon he will be in Oakland joining such folks as musicians Los Rakas, and Pete Escovedo & his orchestra, and graffiti artist/graf event organizer (who has a lot going on in Oakland this weekend) Estria at the Life Is Living hip-hop event, which is billed as "a free celebration of urban life through hip-hop, intergenerational health, and environmental action" in West Oakland's DeFremery Park (16th & Adeline St). All ages event starts at 11am til 6pm. No cover. More info.

Lupe Fiasco's Generation Laser Tour featuring Chiddy Bang, Sarah Green & Young Marqus stops at Oakland's Paramount Theater on Tuesday (Oct 11th). The Chicago-born MC, who recently was spotted "showing support" for the participants of Occupy Wall Street in downtown Manhattan, will undoubtedly have some words to say on the current economic and political climate. And of course he'll be sure to do many tracks off his current album LASERS (an acronym for "Love Always Shines Everytime: Remember to Smile") including the hit single "The Show Goes On" and such other bangers as "All Black Everything," "Out of My Head" featuring labelmate Trey Songz, and "Words I Never Said" featuring Skylar Grey and produced by Alex Da Kid (Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie").

Murs & Ski Beatz "Let's Go" (2011)

Happening right now in Atlanta, GA (aka the ATL) is the annual A3C hip-hop festival / convention which kicked off Thursday and goes through tomorrow Sunday, and features many of the hip-hop artists who are also represented on a new talent-packed compilation (released this week) to coincide with the big music event. Titled A3C Volume 1 is a 2CD set that arrived in Amoeba Tuesday and is packed with a total of 45 tracks including the song featured in the above video for "Lets Go!" by Murs and Ski Beatz, plus such other artists as GLC, Freddie Gibbs featuring El Prez, Main Attrakionz featuring Shady Blaze, Trademark Da Skydiver & Young Roddy featuring Curren$y, and J-Live - to name but a few. As for the festival/convention itself it has expanded even more this year with lots of great panels such as From Turntables to Traktor: Spinning Heat & Understanding The Job At Hand: DJ Panel, Ladies First: Women in Hip-hop panel, and Where's My Check: publishing panel. Meanwhile the 200 + performers include 9th Wonder, Big Daddy Kane, Dead Prez, Random Axe, Homeboy Sandman, Big Krit, and Fashawn For more info on the A3C conference click here.

A-Plus "Can't Stop" (2011)

A-Plus of the Souls of Mischief has just released a video for "Can't Stop"- his Red Hot Chili Peppers cover from his Pepper Spray EP which dropped two months ago and is distinctive in that it remixes Red Hot Chili Peppers classics and serves as one-fourth of his ongoing Tribute Series. "Can't Stop" follows up on videos by A-Plus for the Peppers' songs "Give It Away" and "Road Trippin." The video was directed by A-Plus' good friend Unjust who is producer of the group Chosen Few. "Truly, if it weren't for him, it would have not gotten done," noted A-Plus who, like many artists these days, has little or no budget for video

G Stack "Charlie Sheen" (2011)

When not making music, like his excellent new album The Hierophant, Casual of the Hieroglyphics crew is making videos for himself and others. His latest video (above) is one he directed with Wetfoot Filmworks for Oakland rapper G Stack (of The Delinquents fame). Titled "Charlie Sheen" the song is produced by the Electric Company and is from the, as yet untitled, forthcoming album from the longtime Oakland rapper.

And finally condolences go out to longtime East Bay emcee Mic T whose mom, Donna Thibodeaux, passed this week. Her funeral is happening today. Rest in peace.
