Before opening this fine Spring morning, at least 100 rabid record collectors had lined up in front of Amoeba Music in Berkeley to take part in Record Store Day 2010! When we opened our doors, the crowd immediately filed down our "Broadway" display aisle, where they grabbed as many of the exclusive releases for the day as they could.

Some of the hot sellers were the Flaming Lips performing Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on colored LP, a Fela Kuti 10-inch, a Rolling Stones 7-inch, and a special box set of John Lennon 7-inch singles. Having been in charge of setting up the display both last year and this year, I noticed that there were almost double the amount of releases this year than last year, and the crowd was easily double from last year as well.

I could go on for ages about all the awesome releases that sold out within the first hour (Elvis Presley, Sonic Youth, Modest Mouse, and Soundgarden reissues, among them), but here at Amoeba Berkeley, Record Store Day wasn't only about the releases. We also had some great DJ's all day long! Starting out the day was Amoeba's own Kyle, who spun garage and punk rock for an hour.

After Kyle, Holly Golightly and Lawyer Dave (aka The Brokeoffs) brought in a great mix cd of old-timey southern blues, gospel, and Americana tunes. Since they were on tour, it would have been a bit difficult to do a full DJ set with vinyl and the whole 9 yards, but they hung around the DJ booth while their CD played and talked with fans who traveled from all over Northern California just to come meet them.

Finishing off the day with an epic 3 hour set of everything under the sun was DJ Platurn, a mainstay in the Oakland DJ scene and an Amoeba Berkeley Alum. Spinning Hip-Hop beats with Beatles vocal tracks as well as some great deep R&B cuts, Platurn epitomizes the eclectic nature of Record Store Day.

It wouldn't be a celebration without giveaways, and Amoeba Berkeley did not disappoint! In addition to a couple crazy limited edition Record Store Day lithographs, we also gave away THREE Beatles Mono CD Box Sets, TWO $25 Amoeba Gift Certificates, and a Rock N Roll Triviologies board game. Each prize was stuck in a special limited edition Amoeba bag filled with an Amoeba T-Shirt and a bunch of Record Store Day swag too! All the winners were quite excited!

All in all, Record Store Day 2010 was a lot of work and a lot of fun! We'd like to thank all of the DJs, employees, as well as the countless customers that keep the greatest record store in the world alive!
