Amoeblog interview with SF Mime Troupe's Pat Moran

As per usual for summertime in the Bay Area, this weekend there will be lots of fun happenings to choose from-- many either for free or very affordably priced. These include the SF Mime Troupe's latest production Too BIg To Fail (Fri, Sat, Sun), Amoebapalooza (Sun), and the Lakefest (Sat, Sun).

A little earlier this afternoon (Friday July 31st), as the SF Mime Troupe was setting up for this evening's performance in Berkeley's Frances Willard/Ho Chi Minh Park (Derby & HIllegass), I conducted a brief but informative chat (video above) with musical director Pat Moran. The SF Mime Troupe is celebrating its 50th victorious year of putting on socially & politically charged plays for Bay Area summer audiences. This summer they are touring Bay Area parks with Too Big To Fail, which, in the form of a simple tale of an African villager, cleverly tackles the complex current global economic crisis.

Directed by Wilma Bonet, written by Michael Gene Sullivan, and with music by Pat Moran, this evening's entertainment kicks off at 6pm with music, and the play begins at 6:30pm. Tomorrow at 1:30pm/2pm at the same location and on Sunday afternoon (2pm/2:30pm) the Troupe will trek over to Mesa Park in Bolinas, in West Marin County. Admission to all all Bay Area park plays by the SF Mime Troupe is free but a donation (of any size) is requested for these always edutaining events. For more info on the remaining summer 2009 schedule visit the troupe's website.

Saturday and Sunday (Aug 1 & 2) will be the fun, free Lakefest, a festival near Lake Merritt in Oakland, on Lakeshore Avenue from Lake Park Ave. to Mandana Blvd. with lots of music, arts, educational booths, food, and kids events happening each day from 10am-6pm.

Representing the town (aka Oakland) will be such fine local organizations as Oaklandish, who will have their Mobile Ops Rig on Lakeshore near Colonial Donuts both days, and K-Dub of Town Park presenting "Hood Games by the Lake" at Splash Pad Park on Sunday, with a special appearance by fellow award-winner Baby Champ (aka "the Scraper Bike  King") -- especially recommended if you missed last weekend's Bike 4 Life event also in Oakland. 10am to 6pm each day. Free. For more information on Lakefest click here.

And of course, the one event you have to attend this weekend is our own mega Amoebapalooza at Mezzanine in San Francisco on Sunday, August 2nd, with a total of 18 acts representing both the San Francisco and Berkeley Amoeba Music stores. The lineup includes Vaughn, Out Demons,Tiny White, 40 Love, Rap Review Wintz, W.C. Von der Berc's Gothic Cabaret (featuring Miss Trixie Grace), Shark Taint, and many more musically diverse acts kicking out the jams in what promises to be a very fun-packed and act-packed night. There are close to twenty groups booked for the evening, which begins at 8pm. Cost is $7 at door, $5 in advance, or you can win tickets (follow this posting on how to win tix c/o SF Station). Mezzanine is located at 444 Jessie Street @ Mint in SF.
