B EP (CD)
Battles
Amoeba Review
Joanna Ricco 05/31/2010
The third EP from math rockers, Battles, B EP comes off as significantly more groove focused than EP C. It may be an abomination to many math/prog-rock enthusiasts, but Battles actually gets kind of funky on B EP. The movement throughout this EP begins to show a broader scope of the band's sensibilities and inspirations, which seem to lie increasingly in creating tight arrangements with a wink and a nudge at pop music and free jazz. “BTTLS,” the fourth track on the five-song disc, is an epic sensory overload, complete with quiet swells and disorienting textures. The closing track, “DANCE” actually sounds like something that could be danced to, which is definitely saying more than a mouthful when it comes to this genre.
