Arthur Verocai
Amoeba Review

Brazilian folk- jazz composer and musician Arthur Verocai released his first self-titled album in 1972 during a rough political time in Brazil, one that was not so kind to the arts. As a result the album never received its deserved attention, which is a shame because Arthur Verocai’s tremendous effort on this album is absolutely stunning, making it one of the best albums to come out of the Brazilian tropicalia music scene. Verocai, a trained classical musician and extraordinary producer, blends tropicalia, jazz, and folk genres in a seamless and effortless fashion. The opening track “Caboclo” is so beautiful you feel as if you could wrap yourself up in it and never return. Verocai utilizes his classical training on this song with the use of gorgeous string arrangements and plucked nylon guitar. Jazzier tunes include “Presente Grego” and “Na Boca Do Sol,” which features a fantastic horn section. Arthur Verocai did not release another album after this until 2007, instead he returned to his work as a producer and though it is a shame we don’t have more material from this great talent, this masterpiece may be just enough.
