Kevin Morby’s A Night at The Little Los Angeles: Sundowner 4-track Demos is a collection of demos from what would become his Sundowner album, recorded at his home and in his backyard shed (the titular Little Los Angeles) in Kansas between 2017-2018. There’s a warmth, intimacy, and vibrancy to the recordings; it’s almost as if Morby was in the next room, and the next room is somewhere in the heartland. Morby has stated that the album was his attempt to translate the feeling of the “Middle American twilight” into sound—and that’s a pretty apt description of what the experience of A Night at… feels like. A brief, lovely moment, made all the more beautiful by the knowledge that it can’t last. Fortunately for listeners, you can just put the needle back on this wonderful album.
