The Walking Dead is based on Robert Kirkman's horror comic of the same name. Season One begins when Deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) awakes from a coma and finds himself in a hostile environment full of blood thirsty zombies. The show's pilot episode was written and directed by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption).
