My favorite Beatles album is Yellow Submarine. That was the first song I ever remember singing as the weeist bit of a child. It's also the first song I introduced to my son. From there, he went on to his own favorite from that album -- "Hey Bulldog;" he has all the lyrics down! Yellow Submarine is the best record to introduce your child to the pleasures of pop music. Sweet, simple, and innocent.

The soundtrack to the psychedelic cartoon classic, Yellow Submarine is a colorful collection of songs. The first side contains Beatles originals recorded prior to the White Album sessions while the second side is devoted to George Martin’s musical score. You don’t need to see the film to enjoy this album. Pounding piano and grimy guitar propel the lurching “Hey Bulldog.” “It’s Only A Northern Song” swirls and surrounds. The acoustic foot-stomping group-hug “All Together Now” should be ten minutes long. The distorted crashing percussion, feedback guitar, pulsing bass and layered vocal on George’s “It’s All Too Much” can’t be turned up loud enough. John’s previously released “All You Need Is Love” sounds much more prophetic and urgent than it did just a year and a half earlier. George Martin’s orchestrated score is a dazzling delight for any fan of the movie, or '60s soundtrack music but, ultimately, the title track is the highlight. Sounding almost like a novelty song on Revolver, in this context, “Yellow Submarine” gets its well deserved due. The sound effects are fantastic, Ringo’s lead vocal is superb, and the sing-along chorus is contagious. There’s a reason entire soccer stadiums (Anfield) sing it to this day. “We all live in a Yellow Submarine!…” Why? It doesn’t matter. We just do. And we like it.
