One of the greatest small combo jazz bands of all time, Miles Davis’ first quintet produced four classic discs from two marathon recording sessions in 1956 as the leader fulfilled his recording contract with Prestige before moving to Columbia. Workin’ was the third of these released, following Cookin’ and Relaxin’, and preceding Steamin’. Choosing a favorite among these seems pointless, because the playing is always bold and imaginative, its loose swing belying the band’s musical camaraderie. In the end it comes down only to which batch of standards and originals the listener prefers. Because of the “contractual obligation” nature of the sessions, the band essentially reprised their live set, which at the time was regularly blowing listeners away at Manhattan’s Caf |
